View Full Version : RVing pointers?

OK, so this RV sales company is going to let me "test camp" their RV over New Years out in Western Maryland. I have no intention of buying it, but they are so desperate at this point that they are convinced that I will love it so much that I will after letting me use it for three days.
I'm thinking they've installed hidden cameras or mikes or some other bullshit, but if that is how they are going to get their jollies, I guess that's fine.
Anyway, the biggest thing I'm worried about is vertical clearance...which is probably silly, but when I was a kid on a school trip, our bus didn't completely make it under a bridge and that noise scared the bejeesus out of me.
What kind of gas mileage should I expect on average? They said that I couldn't use the water or bathroom because it had been winterized, but I could use an electrical hookup. Can I run the heater off of electricity or do I need to use the engine or something?
Any tips from RV users would be appreciated, since I don't want to actually have to buy this damn thing from screwing something up.

I don't knowmuch, my dad rented one a few times. The only things I'll comment on, are the mileage and electricity. With a full RV, you're looking at about 4 mpg with stop and go traffic. As for your power situation, I'd be careful. Using outside sources of heat is bad and the main source of heat requires you to keep the car on if you can't hook up to someone.

If you aren't interested in it, you think they're installing spy devices, and you can't use the water or the bathroom, why are you even bothering?

Free (well, I have to pay for gas) RV for New Years Eve? I can go to whatever party I want, and then I've got a place to crash that doesn't require driving. Or go camping, or whatever. I just thought it was too good to be true honestly when the guy offered it to me, hence my thoughts about the spy equipment.
I've always wanted to try out an RV just to see how it fares in the winter. I'd never use one in the summer, I have yet to see a campable area I'd want to go to that doesn't get colder than what I'd have an AC on at night anyway.

Bring it to tampa and pick Methais up on the way. We'll head out to Miami and get drunk and bang some ho bags. Or just get drunk and tell people we banged ho bags.

There's not enough information in the OP. Is it new or used? Is the dealer making you sign a contract first? I'd be very surprised if they were just going to hand the keys over with no written guarantees that you'd be liable for damage, hard use, etc. I don't care how desperate they are. They are going to cover their financial asses. Read every word of anything they ask you to sign. Then reread it.

Does it matter if it's used?

The RV is used, no way they'd let me tool around in a new one. It is one of my local dealerships, not some big chain. From what I can see from the information they've given me, as long as I don't damage the thing I'm not liable for any payment. I already told the guy that I wasn't interested unless he gave me a written document that stated that I would not be responsible for anything but the gas money and a security deposit. That deposit would be refunded if I decide that I do not want to buy it after 72 hours. I'm not planning on offroading it, so I can't imagine I'll get any heavy use out of the thing.
I'm sure he'll give me the hard sell on Saturday when I bring it back, but I've been dealing with idiotic hard sellers in the home improvement business for a couple of years now, I think I've got their tactics down.

So I'll take that as a no on the road trip.
You need to take the Ratolin BALLLLLS OF STEEEL seminar.
That and a dose of Sean and or Methais would do wonders for your confidence. We're nuts.

No lie.
When we were about 20 my friend was in town with a $300,000 RV that he lived in. His parents owned a carnival and they traveled non stop.
Anyways one spring break we made it up to look like the road rules RV and took it down to the beach all week. Talk about nuts.
