First 2 trailers are out.
Another reason to look forward to 2009.
*And David Yates is directing this one as well.

I wish I could be much less of a book snob and take these movies for what they are, but from 3 on, I've pretty much spent the majority of the time watching the movie banging my head against the wall.

At least there's a lot of bullshit in the sixth book to cut out, as opposed to the other books where most of what was cut was substance. Less bullshit teenage romance? YES PLZ! :D
Yea, it really helps to be able to seperate the book from the movie and respect each for what they are.
I find both hugely entertaining in their own rights. Thats why I've followed the movies as well as own the books.
Ironically enough, I first learned to differentiate when I was an avid Stephen King reader and started seeing his movies. The only movies that completely identified with the books were the short stories, due to their length (lack thereof).
Same with Tom Clancy and the movies based on his Jack Ryan series.
Fitting a 700 page book into a 2 or 3 hour movie, in detail, is impossible. Hell, Jackson could not do it in 9+ hours with LOTR.

I was pretty disappointed in the movies until the last movie (Order of the Phoenix). I felt they did a good job with capturing the essence of that book into the movie.
I'm like Gan though in that I try to separate the movie from the book no matter the case and just try to appreciate it on it's own for what it is.

Agreed on all points, really. My problem is that after reading all the HP books, I've also killed time at work over the years with the Jim Dale audiobooks - probably done the series as a whole 3-4 times now, if not more. So subtle differences and such are that much more glaring to me because I've done more than a single read through, etc.
If a movie can carry forward the general story and the spirit of a book, I generally consider it a success, but 3-5 have just been so painful for me. Maybe it's just because specific things they've changed/left out are ones that I've felt as important when reading, I don't know. The moral of the story is that I have to watch these movies alone because nobody will put up with me during them :D

I would have liked if Alfonso Cuaron had directed it. I liked what he did with the third movie. Though from the previews, this one looks good too.
Edit:
Also, I was surfing google about the new HP movie and came across this gem.

3rd movie was the best.
Alfonso Cuarón is fucking rad.
Gary Oldman is win.
WHY DID OLDMAN HAVE TO DIE LIKE A BITCH IN THE MOST RECENT ONE?
Jesus that pissed me off.
EDIT: If I bothered to read Farmer's post . . . what he said.

Srsly. wtf :(
I think the books are retarded but I like to think it's increased the average amount spent reading in the western adolescent demographic.
I realize the movies are awesome for what they are but it's not for me; I'd rather see Children of Men (AND GUESS WHO DIRECTED THAT?????????) or similar movie.

I think that's why so much of me will enjoy HBO's series of RR Martin's books. Anything to get people to read.

Yeah - it's probably good that HBO is doing it rather than whoever is in charge of "Legacy of the Seeker" or whatever it's called.. My first response when I heard about the Goodkind series/show was positive, and then I saw it. Well, like 10 minutes of it, then I gave it a big old middle finger.

Also like the Dark is Rising movie.
My favorite series growing up.. and they turned it into utter shit.

Ditto. I got really excited when I heard there was a series based on the Sword of Truth novels but man, they're crap. It's a new incarnation of Xena (also by Sam Raimi), only bad.

I've never read a Harry Potter books and I've never found the movies all that interesting. I've only seen them because HBO insists on showing them all approximately 205920492094 times.

Heh, I fell asleep in the second movie. In my defense though, I was doing a lot of stupid drugs back then and i'm sure I was coming down from something.

I have a very shattered view of HP. My ex and I were just ridiculous fans of the whole thing, books, characters, and all. We basically read each other the books and it was sappy as hell, but it was awesome. And we both would go watch the movies with all the crazy people (not dressing up though) and then complain about how they skipped the important stuff.
We separated right before book 7 came out. And IMHO, either because of that or just because book 7 sucked so hard it basically destroyed HP for me. It was so formulaic, so trite, and so obvious it made me question the entire reason I had read the series to that point.
Then I stopped and slapped myself. It is fucking entertainment, not a life, not a fucking real story, and definitely not something that I cared about what the fuck happened to the characters.
Now I LOVE the movies because I don't give a flying rats ass if I remember how exactly that scene in the book. It is ENTERTAINING. The direction from 3 on has been completely awesome.
So anyway, I think that trailer looks bad ass and I will be pirating that movie the minute it comes out if I'm in Iraq when that happens (like Star Trek) or be at the theatre with a bunch of kids looking like a pedo if I'm back in the states. I can't wait!
