So.. how do I raise my damage output as a tank.. I'm specced exactly how I want to be, I'm outgearing the MT for our little 10 man naxx, but I end up doing about 50% less damage overall and my dps is about 200 less I think. So far I've added a dev, heroic strike macro and a shield slam heroic strike macro... I know it's gotta be a fuckup in my rotation somewhere or something..

Armory seems to be down right now.. but you do realize that the MT in most instances will have more rage generation and thus able to use more special attacks, right? Let alone, as an OT on a 1 mob boss fight, you won't be able to use revenge (since you won't dodge, parry or block attacks) which is a big hitter.

And be careful of putting heroic strike in a macro.. it's a rage dump skill.. but you'll end up being rage starved on trash.

As for why you do less damage overall, its probably dependant on the trash you tank. If you want to boost those numbers, open with a thunderclap and shockwave, and then hit shield block on big trash packs, and let your damage shield do a lot of the damage for you.

As for general tanking, a lot of it depends on your block value, AP, hit rating, and expertise rating.

As a protection warrior in 10 man, you should be shooting for 1300-1600 DPS while tanking a boss, and in 25 man, from 1500-1900, which is what is generally needed to hold a boss from a good DPSer. (3.5 - 4k TPS in 10 man, 4-4.7k TPS in 25 man). Some bosses, like Patchwerk, Grobbulus, or Sapphiron, , its easy to hit 2500 DPS as prot simply because you have unlimited rage.

What buffs you should ensure you are getting to boost your DPS/threat:
Windfury totem
Might
Strength of Earth totem
Mutilate Rogue in raid
Feral Druid in raid

In a 10 man, you should still try and get 2 or 3 of those, specifically the WF totem.

The litmus test for playing prot is ultimately, you want to be using Shield Slam, Revenge, Shockwave, Devastate and Heroic Strike in that priority order. Shield Slam will refresh itself on occasion when devastating. The correct set of glyphs will give you 10% more block value, free heroic strikes after revenges, and discounted heroic strike rage cost (I'm not 100% sure, but I think those are the ones).

The biggest mistake people make is wasting time making decisions. You NEED to be doing something on every single Global Cooldown. If you're wasting time deciding which button to press/click, you're not doing it right.

If you are finding that decision time is killing you, here's a simple macro you can use:

/Castrandom Devastate, Shield Slam, Shockwave, Revenge
/cast heroic strike

And then spam that button the whole fight and drink a cup of coffee.

Pay some kids to kill the mobs' cat and stamp on their laptop. Always worked for me.

Fixed.
