I'm buying a laptop for one of my cousins in the next few weeks as a congratulations for getting into college early decision.
Any recommendations? I assume that it will be used 25% for school work, 25% for gaming, and 50% for pr0n.
Apple MacBooks are great machines at just around $1k.

I don't know what the guy is doing in the corner.
I still have a broken laptop that is fairly cheap to fix if interested. (also not a bad laptop). Plus I owe serge money before I'm homeless.
I have a Dell e1505 with a 500GB Ebook.
I got it mostly for my recording, but it works well with school work, and games are alright, not fantastic, but good enough. When I got it, it cost roughly around 1,345 give or take, since they added some basic programs and a bit more ram to be able to run the 9 programs I uset to run at once to record. The speakers are also fantastic for a laptop, I could blare all my metal stuff pretty high, and there is never any scratch-like noises like other laptops have.
I would get a eBook as well. They're cheap, and good for loading music and movies into. Which is what I use it for. :D
I'm sure Dell has some other newer models since I've had mine (since 2006), and it's proven to be handy and good for the job.

I love my HP laptops (I have one for me, one for my wife, and one from work). I've never had an ounce of trouble from any of them and they're by far more reliable than any other brand we tried.
Of course, this is coming from a very technical person, able to fix his own problems. So I've never called HP support for anything other than warranty hardware replacements for my work machines (and even then I usually just call CDW).

I hate to agree with Back, but unfortunately there is some truth in that many of the known viruses are made to target PCs since they are the most widely used so it's able to affect the most users. That's not to say that Macs don't get viruses, just that it doesn't have as much of an occurrence than with PCs.

I just have to chime in... I've managed not to get a single fucking virus in my entire computing life. (accept shit at my IT work/job.. and denial of service attacks).
I've fixed computer problems for a living for family and friends and I just gotta wonder.. how can people be so computer retarded. They're all semi intelligent except for the dealing with me part...
Signed Sean of the Thread... virus free since my Commodore 64.

Alienware isn't as expensive anymore since Dell bought them.

Do not buy my Compaq Presario R4000. There are demons in this motherfucker. DEMONS. HP charged me a million dollars to ward off the leprechaun that lives in this beast.
Holy shit.

Ugh. I didn't know that. I haven't really checked them out in a couple of years, though, so I suppose it's no surprise.

They're still overpriced, imho. My J bought one and the fucking thing weighs a billion pounds and gets so damn hot you can't keep it on your lap for long. I traveled with it once and it was awful. He loves it though and i'm glad because he paid a ton (just not the 5k they used to have the balls to charge).

Why do you never say "J's" name? For whatever reason I find it annoying like "J" is a pet name like calling someone Sugarplum or Snookums.

I have posted his full name before, and it's Justin. I call him J because I call him J. Sorry if that bothers you, but i'm not going to stop. :)

HP laptops are pretty awesome. Best customer service I ever had for a computer too. Just make sure whatever you get him has an extended keyboard (key pad) if he will be doing gaming. Most laptops have them these days.

I love the Macbook but ours has broken 5 times within the first year. And I always see people with broken Macbooks in the Apple store.

Huh. They must have gotten the bad apple because mine has been running strong for well over a year.
Or I got the gold one. Too bad it doesn't pop out gold eggs.

We've had our Macbook for a year or so now, however the DVD player died on it so it kinda sucks. Aside from that, it works great.
Not such a good rep on the MacBook here.
But I’ll sell you my non-broken one for $2B.

I can vouch for really excellent customer support, superior shipping and handling and minimal paperwork.
Then, I was charged $318.50 for a hard drive format.

I have one of these or something close. I don't use my laptop all that much, but it works great when I do.

You've been doing it forever, doesn't bother me that much other than I was curious if there was a story behind it. Do carry on :)

Granted that was 2007, but I'd trust an OS platform that has had constant attacks and trials for >15 years over an OS that hasn't had to deal with any mal ware for that same time and is just now realizing how completely insecure it really is.

Once Windows 7 comes out, I'll grab a new desktop.

If you got one specifically for gaming (assuming they make them or have upgrades available, I dunno, not what I was looking for so I didn't check), I don't see why it wouldn't work for that.

From one of your articles...
The amount of exploit code available in the wild also has an impact on security. While there are thousands of pieces of code that seek to exploit Windows XP vulnerabilities, exploit code for Mac OS X is relatively rare (http://news.zdnet.co.uk/security/0,1000000189,39290494,00.htm).

Word. I've had a HP for years without a single problem.
