View Full Version : How would GS look like to Computer Tech person?

If a IT guy was watching a terminal that was playing GS in some fashion or another, what would it look like? Anything sinister? Would it be comparable to uploading/downloading movies/music, or streaming audio/video? I'm curious if I should bother risking for a way to play.

If you're using SF it's just an xml stream. Wouldn't look too much different from surfing the web aside from the port.

Nope. I work in Bio-defense/technology.

GS will look like a streaming chat feed with a HTML interface. I would not risk it, as I am sure if they look for long, they will notice it is a game.

I wish I had an app to play this on a PDA/High end cell phone. Mainly just let it script while I work/do whatever.

My worry is this new contracting company will force me to sit here until 4:30 every day. I will go insane without something to do. Even with school coming up I will still have tons of nothing time. Maybe I will buy a DS.

Yeah, DS is a better option.

DS ftw.
Also, they're probably only likely to seriously scrutinize your computer activity if you're looking at stuff they have flagged (i.e. porn), or if you're really unproductive and not getting your work done.
Could also bring books into work if you wanted, and read!

I read on average 3 books a week.. if I had a job where I could sit at a desk I'd totally do it. My dad does it all the time because he has a lot of down time at his work, heh!

There literally isn't more things to do. After a while you just run out of animals.

We used to call that "Tuesday" when I lived on a farm.

You could always set up an SSH tunnel to a home computer and use VNC. Then it would be all encrypted traffic and there would be know way to know what it is.
There was a forum post a little while back about setting one up.

My network admin and IT director do the searching for illicit network traffic in my company. It's a pretty small company, but the ports that GS uses to play are already banned, as is the site itself. But that doesn't matter since users don't have rights to install software in the first place (eScape is always an option though). Going to a home computer would look more suspicious because now you're hitting an IP address that looks local instead of one that looks like it's going to the internet.
I used to use VNC to get to my home network (for work related reasons) and every time I did, I would hear my IT director yell, "There it is again! What the hell is that? It looks like somebody's going to their home TIVO to watch movies or something!". We in IT have access to a cable modem outside the confines of our network, so I just have a PC set up on that, and let GS script all day and I don't really have any issues, or at least nobody's ever brought it up.
My old job didn't seem to search for anything out of the ordinary. And I could play Gemstone as long as it didn't affect my work (phone support for idiots, I could be asleep and still not affect my work performance). It wasn't really a problem there...
I would honestly say just don't risk it. Everybody should be thankful they have a job in this climate. You don't want to have to try to find another one... You can't ask your IT staff what they search for, and there's no way to know how or what they search for without being one of them. Some jobs put more stock in IT's internet reports than others. There's a guy who has been the #1 in internet traffic and page load time at my work and has never been talked to about it because his executive protects him. Yet I've worked at other places that if you try to hit a blocked site, you get an e-mail from your boss telling you not to do it again or you'll be written up; Whether you did it on purpose or not.

I play on my laptop at work. Use the wireless internet thats for the costumers for the whole building. I'd assume thats not traceable to me. Not that I'm to concerned. I do my job well and would just be told to stop.

I'd bring a personal laptop and get a mobile wireless device. I have one from nextel and it works fine for gs. Is that any different than bring a ds? The size is the only difference really.

I've known others who do this, and I would as well but there is no way in hell I would get signal. Building is shielded.

I thought about it..but I don't think I want to pay another $60/month just to play gemstone at work
