Is there a way to keep that shit from being highlighted? Like I said in that other thread, my issue was that I show arrivals etc only for my highlight list, and SF was highlighting like EVERYTHING (which was annoying in itself).

I used to hate the clickable links, too, but I left them on for a while once and subsequently got used to them. Now, I love them. They're sweet for immediately seeing exits and items in a room. I'm so into them now that I could barely handle playing DragonRealms (when I still played it) because DR doesn't support all the clickable links. I was all like, "OH NO, WHAT'S IN THIS ROOM?!?" and I nearly died after having to carefully read the descriptions all the time until I got used to things. :)

I'll see about putting something together for people who want to give it a shot, but my time's limited lately.

Because you get what you pay for... well no wait.. that doesn't apply for the subscription, but the FE certainly reflects the cost. Considering how cheap zMud is (what is it, $15 for a lifetime of updates?) compared to the cost of ongoing GS costs... (I really don't want to know how much I've given in my lifetime to Simu)

I think it's $30-$40 for ZMUD/CMUD, but I could be wrong about that. Given the capabilities of StormFront + Psinet, I don't really consider that worth it. The $15 subscription cost for GS is something I try not to think about, but I get at least as much (and probably more) entertainment out of playing GS as I do out of, say, going to the movies, for what is roughly an equivalent price. I don't think I could reasonably look at the cost for ZMUD/CMUD the same way.

Just checked: According to the official website, ZMUD is $34.95 and CMUD is $29.95.

The nice thing about CMUD is that you can use it for ANY text-based game, including free ones that are out there. Even if you lose interest in GS, there's other alternatives out there. It's also more flexible and more powerful than SF or the Wizard. Very shortly Citrus will have all the capabilities of SF with PsiNet attached, without needing a key or transmitting personal data to a central server.

I can understand if you're a broke-ass college student and/or have other priorities for your money, as long as you're not just slamming Zugg's products because they have a pricetag attached to them. People deserved to get paid for their hard work.

CrystalTears
12-19-2008, 09:38 AM
I'll have to give it more of a chance and play with it more. Maybe when PsiNet works for it (because I'm hooked on that shit) and I can get the automapper to work, I'll be happier and will make it easier for me to transition. I just really like SF, what can I say.

Martaigne
12-19-2008, 09:46 AM
PsiNet will never work for it. Jamus completely ignored all of my proposals to make a COM component that ZMUD/CMUD can call to communicate with the PsiNet server. So if you want to stay on the PsiNet network, keep SF.

The alternative I'm currently developing is peer-to-peer using CCHAT which is still in development. I had successful code tests with ZMUD and ZCHAT but since I abandoned ZMUD as a obsolete platform I'll have to wait until CCHAT is released to begin testing on it again.

The automapper works, you just need a map. Which I have. It's not complete but can get you around fairly well. It would probably take a community effort to map everything in the game. Plus side is that I can replicate PsiNet room numbers for people used to PsiNet, and point to info on the foraging website.

CrystalTears
12-19-2008, 09:59 AM
I don't use PsiNet for chat as some of the useless chatter is enough in the game than to need to hear more of it elsewhere. I use it for the self spellups, looting (I love just grabbing stuff), aliases and atlas. I also use Lich for the background scripting it does. So yeah, probably better that I stick with SF for now.

But I use Zmud for other text games, so it's not going to waste!

Martaigne
12-19-2008, 10:15 AM
The beta of Citrus has a nearly-complete Autobuff feature, for which you can configure to use known spells, scrolls, edible and quaffable magic items, rub/raise/tap magic items, wear enhancives, society symbols/signs/sigils, cmans like surge and smastery. Some spells need to be added because I need the messaging for them.

Also, the basic item grouping you see in the screenshot is evolving into a complete classification system which will group your inventory alphabetically by several basic types (gems, herbs, boxes, wands, scrolls, magic items, alchemy components, and misc) with a configurable storage container for each type of item, including jars.

CMUD already does aliases.

I remember playing a small scale (approximately 100 people on peak hours) free MUD and using MUSHclient. When socketing came out, it was great. We set up a server which would let us control other people in the clan, if they wanted. Like for when they got ambushed in CvC. Poor newbs who still got adrenaline rushes from that and couldn't think straight.

To Mathari: I bet there's some fun potential for remotely controlling a character via ZMUD/CMUD with some of the socket style program ad ons.

Yeah, that's true; only problem for me is that, pretty much without fail, I have basically loathed every other free text-based game that I've ever played (and I've tried many). Often it has to do with the typically generic MUD combat systems, but not always. Anyway, my interest in other text-based games is basically nil.

I can understand if you're a broke-ass college student and/or have other priorities for your money, as long as you're not just slamming Zugg's products because they have a pricetag attached to them. People deserved to get paid for their hard work.

OSX is just BSD in disguise. You ought to be able to build it from source but I, of course, have no idea how bastardized their flavor of BSD is.
