[Depths of V'Tull, Lower Eye]
You notice a fire sprite (flying).
Obvious exits: northeast, southwest
>hi
Roundtime: 2 sec.
You attempt to blend with the surroundings and feel confident that no one has noticed your doing so.
>aim left leg
You're now aiming at the left leg of your target when using a ranged weapon, or while ambushing.
>
Your disk arrives, following you dutifully.
>
A fire sprite flits back and forth cautiously..
>amb spr
You leap from hiding to attack!
You swing a pearl-handled rolaren waraxe at a fire sprite!
AS: +405 vs DS: +299 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +61 = +197
... and hit for 71 points of damage!
The fire sprite is knocked to the ground!
The fire sprite is stunned!
Roundtime: 6 sec.
>

The ground begins to rumble violently and cracks spread across the blackened ground, some revealing white-hot veins of bubbling lava underneath.
>aim head
You're now aiming at the head of your target when using a ranged weapon, or while ambushing.

[You have 6 kills remaining.]

The fire in the fire sprite's eyes slowly fades.
The glowing specks of energy surrounding a fire sprite suddenly shoot off in all directions, then quickly fade away.
The brilliant luminescence fades from around a fire sprite.
Roundtime: 6 sec.

so i can AIM for the sprite's leg and knock it down. but i can't aim for any other body part for a crit? and basically just have to keep smashing at it until it's out of blood? there has got to be a faster way for a sword and board.

First problem is you're using a weapon with a pearl on it.

You just have to bleed them. A lot of undead are the same way. Best I was able to do consistently was two attacks with dual maces. I still think you are using the correct strategy by ambushing though. Even if it is only for the DS pushdown. It's a good idea to pick up a cold flaring weapon just for sprites and mages. I'm pretty sure they flare more often than they would on another creature and it will help protect you from the weapon fire of fire mages.

Edit: With dual cold flaring maces, I was probably averaging 1.5 attacks to kill a fire sprite. Ambushing of course.

the waraxe is hot. Squares are just doomed to suck

That's only because most of them are using edged weapons.:club:

When you don't see the crit messaging, it usually means that you hit an area that the creature doesn't have, meaning the GM didn't think the crit messaging made sense for the critter, so they removed it. However, although you can't get stuns and death crits from it, you do get the crit HP adder.

Since you can't crit them, the best place to aim is the back. You will get a lot of knockdowns and although back crits don't have as many death crits, they do have high HP for most ranks.

Ha, I was just gonna say that. I always aimed for the back first instead of a leg.

Is it not true that the crit HP adder is increased when you ambush without specifying a body location? Thus negating the need for aiming at the back?

Pretty sure if you don't aim you get half the adder and if you just attack from hiding, you get the DS pushdown but no crit adder.

Aimed strike using AMBUSH: Full crit modifier
Silent Strike (may not be aimed): Full crit modifier
Regular attack from hiding: Half crit modifier
Unaimed ambush from hiding: Half crit modifier***

The DS pushdown is the same in all cases.

***Unaimed ambush is mechanically the same as ATTACK from hiding but it adds 1 second RT.

So,

For aimed strike from hiding use AMB <critter> <body location>
For unaimed strike from hiding always use ATTACK unless you have access to Silent Strike.

Good info there. So, Worm is right in the OP's case. I only recently noticed that you still get the DS pushdown when using the attack command instead of ambush when in hiding. Could be good for youngsters that can't reliably use their ambush training yet (for targeting) but can hide.

It's good against pretty much anything that doesn't have any areas you can aim at, e.g. elementals. Hide, attack from hiding for the DS pushdown since you can't aim at an area anyway.

aiming at the back. thanks, guys.

The air heats up as a fire sprite comes whirling in, spitting flames in every direction!

You swing a pearl-handled rolaren waraxe at a fire sprite!
AS: +405 vs DS: +299 with AvD: +30 + d100 roll: +25 = +161
... and hit for 101 points of damage!

The fire sprite goes limp and she falls over as the fire slowly fades from her eyes.
The glowing specks of energy surrounding a fire sprite suddenly shoot off in all directions, then quickly fade away.
The brilliant luminescence fades from around a fire sprite.
Roundtime: 6 sec.
