Um. I have so much trouble GAINING weight. I'm back at around 175 right now, but if I'm not careful I can dip down to 168 or so within a few weeks.
With regards to rice....uh. The reason why most Viet people are so short is because they're malnourished...I only eat rice when I'm at home or when we order out .

Will power?? Seriously, people will tell you all the tips in the world but self control is the only one that works. Trust me, I've been on a diet since the day I was born.....
being poor helps ... but on a serious note what else do you eat in a day? do you drink lots of sodas?

Honestly hon you are beautiful why worry about 5 pounds you gain more than that during that time of the month. But if its really bothering you this bad just drink water for a few days with the three basic meals. Thats what I do. Though currently I'm getting yelled at for being to small by my doctor and hes put me on a diet heh.
Eat six small meals a day, it may seem like alot but really it isn't and its healthier for you and you won't gain weight.
pfft my 6 small meals of bags of doritos and beer isn't helping my weight :(

Exercise? Damn girl, you act like you gained 20 lbs! 5 lbs. is nothing, you'll lose it if you get active. I don't know about diets though. Diets are against my religion. I love food too much to watch what I eat. So, hit the gym and start running on that tread mill!

Cut down on bad carbs. Avoid pasta, white bread, white rice.
Increase good grains. Brown rice, wheat bread, barley.
Beans are very good for you. Good fiber, and protein, low calorie.

Yeah, I'm thinking of doing an over night gym thing to sweat it off. Actually I gained 5 lbs over what I was hoping to lose. I'm not conceited but my weight etc affects my confidence, self esteem and mood. When I feel I'm chubby.. I'm not very jolly but very cranky.
What is the normal weight for 5'8?
Also, does smoking makes you lose weight?

Drink a lot of water during meals. Do 15-30 minutes of cardio every day. I sweated out 4 lbs in two hours once jumping rope and running. My buddy Chad lost 7 lbs in about 3.
For a girl? I'd say that 120-130 lbs is good for 5'8. I dunno about you guys, but I don't really dig girls whose waist I can put my hands around.

If you do cardio, do it first thing in the morning after you wake up, and don't eat anything for a half an hour after.
You will lose the most fat this way. Your blood sugar is low in the morning from sleeping. To get energy, your body will mobilize fat. This will also speed your metabolism up for the entire day.

Not if you do it correctly. You're supposed to do sort of a gliding running movement... keep your knees bent the whole time. That machine kicks your ass if you do it properly. Though women can usually do it a lot easier.
if your body is not used to it you will feel it in your knees and muscles untill it is conditioned

I don't know about eating right, cos I'm actually reading this thread with a sandwich in my hand, ROFL. But, I worked out every other day for a couple months, the first month I lost like 15-20 lbs? Well, that was also cos I also partied every night too and I ate what ever the hell I want. But, seriously I'm not good with diets, so I don't know how much you'd lose. It's all on motivation. Anyway, you look fine, why the hell do you wanna lose more weight? Just tone your muscles.

That's actually another version of the Atkin's which is another version of what bodybuilders have doing for decades.
Low-Carb/No-Carb diets will make you drop it fast during the induction phase, but unless you monitor your carb intake so as not to cross your intake threshold, you'll gain it back fast.
ANY exercise is best done first when you wake up but it's not necessary.
Do your exercise in the morning and don't eat anything for at least 4 hours before you go to bed. And surely don't go mental over 5 lbs.
The first three days of my attempt to quit smoking I ate everything in sight. A box or two of twinkies, some ho-hos... house pets... you know the usual. I may have gained 2-3 pounds that week, but since I work out regularly, it didn't stay on.
Keeping active is the key to any weight issue.
And I don't think there is a need to delete the thread.

Low carb diets are bad because if you tend to binge or have low will power, you will gain back more weight than you lost.
My dad has a diet that is pure will power. He drinks only seltzer all day and the only food he eats is dinner. Also he is climbing ladders all day in the summer sun and painting houses. he loses a lot of weight.

Actually if you deny your body food your body goes into starvation mode and holds onto the fat until it begins to digest itself.

All these diets piss me off big time. I tried lots and every time I would lose a few pounds, id stop, go back to normal eating and put on twice what I'd lost.
Honestly, to lose weight just eat healthy low fat food (count cals if you have to) and have everything in moderation. Get plenty of excersise, drink lots of water etc.
I view it like this: A healthy diet shouldnt just be a temporary thing. If your really over weight you need to change your eating habits for life to maintain a healthy weight, not just for the few months it takes to lose the excess weight.
This isnt directed at anyone by the way, its just my general view on dieting, as someone who has struggled with weight/eating issues for a few years.
Just wanted to add: If you are obsessing over a few extra pounds then you probably have other issues you need to work out. I know it was that way with me. A lot of people that are not actually overweight believe that they are and become obsessed with dieting at the expense of their physical and mental health. Anyone who becomes obsessed with certain things should figure out what the root of the problem really is, 9/10 times it probably isnt weight.

ANY diet is bad if you binge. Hence this statement.
Low-Carb/No-Carb diets will make you drop it fast during the induction phase, but unless you monitor your carb intake so as not to cross your intake threshold, you'll gain it back fast.
Eating one meal a day, and being in the evening, with only seltzer water to sustain you from waking to meal time is rather.... ill-conceived. Malnourishment of the body's systems is far worse than succumbing to a binge.
Breaking down his dinner into 4-5 small meals through the day, to me, would be much more intelligent.
Gaining back more than the initial loss is generally true of any diet and not indicative of only a low-carb regiment. Just as will power is dependent upon the person, not the diet. If you binge on an Atkin's plan, you're going to binge on a slim-fast plan.

Exactly. You can try all the fad diets in the world but if you cut the crap out of your diet and excersize then you will lose weight.
One thing that does piss me off is thin people who complain constantly about being fat. I had a friend who was a good weight, totally normal but she would always go on about how she was fat, she just did it to get attention.
One day I said to her 'Do you think you are fat? she said yes so I asked if she thought I was fat and she said no. I told her I weighed more than her, so if I wasnt fat then she wasnt. She never mentioned being fat to me again.

I joined Weight Watchers because I just didn't know how to eat healthy. I got tired of diet pills, starving, etc and I just decided it was time. I had gained ten pounds and I wanted to lose it right. After 11 weeks, I hit my goal weight and I now know how to eat healthy. I didn't attend the meetings, I just go to the weekly weigh-ins. It helped me stay on track to know that come a week's time I was going to have to get on that scale for someone else.

First of all...Bob, Edaarin...when a strong gust of wind blows, do you fall over?
Second, Shalla...I don't really believe in diets because a lot of times they deprive you of nutrients that you need. You just have to watch how much of something you eat.
Usually anymore I'll make a HUGE salad with a vinegarette dressing and eat the whole thing, THEN I'll tackle my steak/chicken/pasta. Cut out the amount of sugar you ingest, because those are carbs. I thought I was being really healthy by not drinking soda, by drinking iced tea instead. Only problem is, I put a shitload of sugar in my tea. My suggestion? Carry one of those snazzy half-gallon pop-top water jugs with you. You'll find by having one around all the time you'll drink more of it as opposed to finding a water fountain or a water cooler.
EXERCISE. I hate it. So I forced myself to take an aerobics class at my school so I that way I HAD to go do it. When I'm not doing that I put on my most energetic CDs and dance around the house (with the windows closed) like a maniac.
Take a daily vitamin, will help boost energy and such.
I'm 5'2" and I weigh 140. I don't consider myself fat, though I do have some extra soft-fleshy at my abdomen that I have lovingly named "Chub". Yeah, I don't like it...but I know that I'm taking care of my body as best I can, and I feel good about that.
Good luck dear, and don't do anything too drastic!

Lay off of the coffee and drink more water and watch your sodium intake. Also, you can gain up to 5 lbs in water weight during "that time of the month", sucks but it's true. Water retention can cause that chubby feeling you are describing, especially if you haven't really changed your eating habits.

Women obsess about weight way too much. My ex girlfriend is 5'3 and 135 lbs, and she does nothing but obsess over her weight. She's an amateur model, and I'd wager that 99% of the male population would say that she looks a lot better than if she was a waif. Seriously, you don't have to be 100 lbs. The fact is that it really is society that makes women feel the need to be a certain weight, height, breast size, clothing size.
And I know that sounds like an excuse but consider that a long time ago larger women used to be considered beautiful. Now all the models and actors and singers that are "beautiful" are so thing and encouraged to be thinner and encouraged to have their breasts enlarged and all this other crap. Then you take the normal, low self-esteem teen and they have to somehow deal with the images of beauty being these plastic stick figures.

Well if having big breasts is important, I'm pushing that men get their penises somehow surgically altered, making them longer and bigger. Oh, and as a side treat, giving them stamina pills as well.

I'm not exactly the biggest or most built guy in the world, but I'd like to think that I'm not a waif. Just weighed myself, and I keep losing weight...171 again...lwerjalekwjrjelkj, I need to go buy some tuna...

They make Sunkist tuna in the packets now, it's great and portable. I try to eat that and have a big glass of water or tea for lunch at work, instead of going out to eat.

They can make you seriously ill, the silicon poisoning can be very harmful. You can lose all feeling in your breasts and nipples or the feeling can become heightened.
This is why they use saline now. Silicon is still available I'm sure, but generally a surgeon will suggest saline bags.

Yes, tuna...I'm tryin to gain weight, but I'm not trying to clog my arteries. Although I could if I wanted, and sometimes do. Anyway, just got back from my abnormal psych exam, and one of the questions was about a case study of bulimia. Crazy ass bitch would go a few days without eating, then eat as much as 7 or 8 double cheeseburgers, several orders of fries, and 2 milkshakes. And then toss it all back up. After awhile, she didn't even need to stick her finger down her throat to purge.
Since when is tuna fattening?

Tuna has tons of protein, that's why people trying to gain weight eat it. I eat two mac and cheeses with a full can of tuna in it like 10 mins before i go to sleep to try and gain weight.. tons of carbs and protein.

Ok! Just in from my Glamour magazine!
"How many days of bad eating does it take to get fatter?"
Happily, one or two days of excess won't make you bigger. Our experts say that it generally takes a week or so over overeating to consume the 3,5000 excess calories required to gain a pound of fat. But undereating fat can also play a role.
If you're suddenly taking in too few calories, your body goes into starvation mode and starts to conserve calories, which means your metabolism drops. Then when you eat nromally, you'll store extra fat. That's why women who frequently skip meals or yo=yo diet carry excess body fat. A quick calculation that works for most women: Multiply your weight by 10 and don't eat fewer calories than that number a day. It's best to eat five small meals a day rather than three.
Thats why you have to be physically active to maintain yout metabolism. Also, Fat cells never leave your body. In the physiological sense they fill or deflate but never leave so if you allow yourself to gain a pound of fat, you will neve rbe able to get rid of those fat cells. Thats why its so hard for people to lose wait and keep it off.

They said three grapefruits are the size of a pound of fat. And two tangerines are the size of a pound of muscle. Something like that.
Yes, muscle weighs more than fat. Which is why you can look alot thinner while maintaining your body weight.
However, muscle is not detrimental to good health like fat is

Fat is three times as large as muscle. In turn, muscle is three times as dense.

But muscle is smaller and that is the difference. We want the small stuff, not the big stuff.
