attunment

i notice last night i have the option to attune to an element.
my understanding is attunement is for elemental purposes only, is that correct?

is there any use for a ranger to attune?
attune to fire for fire spirit?
water for ice patch?
earth for nature? or i just thinking about something usless?

anyone know anything more about this?
