The day without a gay should be everyday.

I hope you use it against him as a no-call, no-show. Or call his bluff and demand a doctor's note to return to work.

How is it a no call no show if the guy he sent the link to knows he's going to participate?

Stunseed

It's not a national holiday. No reasonable excuse = no call, no show.

I use this because I took off of work for Veteran's Day and was given the same BS.

No call implies contact wasn't made. Contact was made. No show is self explanatory.

It's nothing more than an unexcused absence. How it's handled depends on the employer and/or State Law.

I hate to agree with Tsa'ah, but yeah, no call means you didn't let them know you weren't gonna show up. It may not be an acceptable excuse to the bosses, but it's still not a no call.

The places I've been employed, no call doesn't mean you made no contact, no call means you didn't go through the proper amount of time to take the day off. And that's generally 2 weeks notice. So, we'd still get the no call and the obvious no show if we just took a day off, even if we let them know a day or two in advance. That was both Kodak and the Newspaper I worked for.

That's crazy, having to give 2 weeks notice for a day off. I never had to do that at any job.

The Ponzzz

Yeah, I've always had to treat a leasure day off as a vacation day, which requires 2 weeks. I could call in "sick" but that's always risky.

no call / no show is a generic term where I've worked also.

no call / no show in my experiences has been a generic tag used for an unexcused absence and usually terms for termination.

Well then people are using it wrong. :P

I guess it depends on where you work. In my experience it's always meant exactly what it said, someone didn't call and didn't show, and it was a reason to fire them.

Stunseed
12-10-2008, 08:12 PM
< Or call his bluff and demand a doctor's note to return to work >

Basically, if they use the "I'm sick" reason, unexcused could be used to force someone into acquiring a doctor's note. Barring that, it's job abandonment. I've seen people get escorted out from it, it fucking sucks, but it's there.

Could he technically try and sue for being fired over this reason? Turning it into "Oh, I got fired because I'm gay" or "They're discriminating against me because I attended this event."

I'd be curious where he volunteered at. If he actually went and volunteered somewhere I'd cut him some slack if possible.

I guess he could try. I dunno if it would fly. But if I were the employer I wouldn't even want that mess to begin with. I'd count it as an unpaid day off. Just my opinion.

I just say I'll be out. If I'm going to be gone for at least a week I need to give some kind of lead time, like maybe a week or two to plan around the other department members.

But for a day? I call the morning of and leave a message on my boss' voicemail that I'll be out for the day.

Doctor notes were only necessary if you were out sick for more than a few days in a row.

Exactly. Take the day off for all I care.. I'll just look at the 1000 applications sitting on my desk that won't take frivolous days off.

A REALLY stupid time to be calling off from work.

I've found it's easier to do that in professional/salary jobs than hourly.

Why that is, I have no idea.

At my last job I directed the evening newscasts and I had to give two weeks notice (supposedly) because it was hard to get a replacement at such short notice to fill in for me (only 3 people who knew how to do the job), which is why I never called off sick either. They were also very picky about who would cover for me since it was the prime shows and they wanted my replacement to make little to no errors.

Of course, when the morning show guy would call off the night before I was the only one who could fill in at 4am after working 3pm-midnight. Damn, that just reminded me how much I disliked that fucking job and why I quit.

I've never had to produce a doctor's note though. When I worked at Disney you had to show a note if you called in sick a certain amount of days. But what do you expect? Disney is evil.

See I found it easier to take time off when the pay for under 30k. Anything over 30k was tough. Sure I'm allowed extended lucnhes, coming in late or leaving early, but taking off time? I had to jump through loops!

Interesting. I make over 30k but I never take days off really. I took 2 weeks off this year to goto the Netherlands and I still have over a month in rolled over vacation days. That said I decided this week that I'm taking every friday off from now till Feb. and told my bosses starting this Friday I'm not coming in on Fridays anymore and they were fine with it.

Heh, seriously, and no second chance.

If I'm contagious, I still have to call into work to talk about inventory and production lists for at least an hour or two. Pretty sure I'd get fired if I just didn't show up or called the morning of and left a message without making sure stuff is taken care of. They try to be understanding about people getting sick (and certainly don't want them touching the food) but shit won't get done if people don't plan in advance for days off.

My old job used to do that but I didn't mind since I never missed a day of work in 8 years. Just got two weeks worth of pay tacked on at the end of the year.

No call/No show: 1st occurrence = written warning. 2nd occurrence = final written. 3rd occurrence = termination. 3 days in a row = job abandonment/termination.

sick days: must call in and leave message/speak with manager. Consistently sick on Mondays or Fridays = sick time abuse (verbal, written, final written, termination). Sick for more than 3 days in a row = clearance from physician to come back to work.

Vacation days: require approval from manager. No rollover of vacation days at years end.

Thats our company policy in a nutshell.

If I don't go in, I call and leave a voice mail for the lab, and everyone there usually does the same. We get a huge amount of time off, 5 weeks vacation, four personal days, and 12 days sick leave, but with experiments always needing done, it's kind of tricky arranging time off without compromising them. Everything in the lab is about timing. For example, if I took today off, and didn't finish the experiment I've been working on this week, I'd have to start it again from scratch and it'd set me back three days.

It's none of their business. It was a poorly thought out idea. Scratch that, it was a fucking stupid idea. Consider the sheer number of people still in the closet, then you have those who are unprotected in the workforce and must do everything they can to not bring attention to their sexuality.

Let's not forget the progressive employers that offer full same-sex benefits and support. Why would one purposely disrupt business as usual for an employer that agrees with the general message. If this is the best we can come up with (I'm positive it is not), it’s no wonder amendments like prop 8 pass. The couple that thought this up didn't do nearly enough "thinking".

Hahaha, oh the irony. I didn't mean to do what I did there, but I see it in all it's goatse like glory and it was completely unintentional.

That's true, about caring enough to sue. There have been a few lawsuits seeking to allow someone to wear anti-gay, gay, and straight pride shirts, but mainly targeted towards schools and not really a "I'm suing you for wearing that cotton straight pride shirt and breathing my gay air" kind of thing was what I was getting it.

It is a surprisingly vital job. At my last job we had a problem with having dishwashers not show up for work and it fucked up the entire night whenever it happened :/

TheEschaton

yeah, cause then someone who doesn't like getting their hands dirty has to do the job.

I remember one Friday night, we had a surplus of waitresses and short one dishwasher, and they made this waitress dishwash. It was hilarious, or would have been, had I not been the other dishwasher trying to make up for her sheer incompetence (yes, even dishwashing requires some level of competence).
