View Full Version : STOP THE OPPRESSION!
So I had a flat tire the other day and it provoked this thought.
It has been at least 10 years since I've had to change a flat tire. And my Ford Explorer is now 10 years old. (The flat was on my wife's new car btw)
So I've had air in the tires of my Explorer since the time of their purchase (3 years) and air in the spare tire of my Explorer for 10 years.
That poor air. It has been held in slavery and oppressed into working for me for little or no compensation. TRAPPED! ENSLAVED!
I think we should start a campaign to free the oppressed and enslaved air in tires worldwide.
Air was never meant to be bound as such. It was meant to blow free across the earth.
Fly air, fly!

I can't imagine the spare was any good after 10 years. Were you able to use it? Also, am I the only person that finds you cannot change a tire with the crappy tools that come with your vehicle?

Any insurance worth a damn has free roadside assistance.
That and AAA rules.
Speaking of freeing the enslaved air I think the movement is in full swing. My brother's car was freed from all four tires the other night in front of Fergs.

I had mexican to console myself after U$C's marginal victory over the mighty Bruins. I am freeing air all over the place this morning.
American Express offers roadside assistance for its cardholders, too. I've never used it, but it's nice to know that it's there.
That said, I don't think I'd use it on a flat tire if I had a spare.

Last winter I had a flat in a snowstorm. I called AAA and they gave me a time estimate of 2 hours.
I started changing it myself, but my hands are too bad, I couldn't even seat the jack.
As I resigned myself to a long wait, a county plow truck came up behind me. The driver jumped out, took the jack from my hands and very quickly changed my tire.
The driver was in his late 20's, nice looking guy.
I thanked him and offered to pay him. He said, "Don't be silly. If it were my mom out here I'd hope somebody would stop and help her."
Talk about feeling old!!!!!
And that's my AAA story.

ROFL, great story KK.
Personally I'd be embarassed to have AAA come and change my flat. But I'm a healthy grown man in his prime years.

I fucking would. You're paying for it
I'm without AAA for the first time in my life currently but I don't need at the moment it's all good. I'll never change another flat in my life if I can help it.

My former employer bought it for me after I trashed a suit changing a tire when on call. Ran over a crescent wrench.. in the bottom and out the side. I decided the yearly fee was worth it after that especially for the tow services.

You have to think about how much your time is worth, though. If I can change a flat and be on my way in a quarter of the time (or less!) it would take AAA to get there, I'll just do it myself.
For other things, yeah, I'll give AAA a call. Flat tires and dead batteries I can usually handle on my own much quicker than AAA ever could.

I have witnessed what happens when the air in a tire has had enough and a rebellion ensues.
Many moons ago I was a medic, getting paid crap to jump out of the back of an ambulance and save lives. We got a call to a gas station, where I saw one of my more odd injuries. There was a man sitting cross legged on the ground, his left hand had a hole blown through it about 2.5 inches in diameter and a dazed look on his face. He was airing up a truck tire (enslaving new air) that was lying flat on the ground when the tire exploded. Bystanders claimed that the tire flew about 30 feet into the air, after it hit him in the head.
I was surprised at how calm he was, given the vicious injury to the hand. Turns out, he had no idea his hand was hurt. As I began my initial assessment he informed be that he could not see. Apparently the blunt force trauma to the head had blinded him.
Air...don't piss it off.

Jump pak for the win. I use one for everything. Even fishing :)
But the days of decent car jack systems and such.. fuck that. I live in a metro large enough that AAA is on scene in minutes.
I used to keep a hydraulic jack and all the tools I needed in my jeep. That's about the only time I'd do it myself again. I did use AAA to pull my jeep out of a muddy drainage bed once however.
I should have checked the bed first. I had no indication it was about four feet of soft detritus.. dug right in to the frame on 36" tires and a lift. :(
And the deputies made me use my shovel and fill the trenches. 2x :(

The flat was on the wife's 2006 model. Yes, her spare was good. Jury is still out on the spare on my 98 Explorer.
