View Full Version : [Relatively] New Cleric

I found that I have a level 10 cleric that I created many years ago. I'd like her to eventually be a pure caster, as she'd eventually just be a raising fiend (should I have the patience to get her to that level).

When's a good time to drop the sword/board? Should I change/add anything? Any suggestions would be great. I don't know beans about clerics. Thanks.

Against undead, using 301 (bind) then swinging is great for a very long time. I still use bind (although I use voln fu instead of a sword) at 49 as my main form of attack.

Your training doesn't look bad. I personally left lores off my list completely until about 35, it helped me over train a bit in HP to get the mana I needed. I later found points for them after stopping SMC, AS, and MIU at 30 ranks (I'll eventually move them to 1x, when I'm done with lores).

The only thing I'd say can use a real change is your spell choices. Having 6 of each doesn't truly help you with either circle. If you instead went down to 103, and got 3 extra MjS, you'd have the same DS (actually +1 more from 202) and you'd be only 2 MjS ranks away from Bravery for +15 AS. You'll probably want to try and get 211 by level 11 or 12, and 215 by 15 or 16, then go for 107/120 for more TD/DS/utility spells.

If you truly want a raising fiend. You could fixskill at 18 to get 40 cleric ranks. I don't think you can get enough lores to make chrisms at 18, though. The character would be an awful hunter (obviously) but could raise and use only about 2-3 spirit per raise.

Oh and I didn't even look at the stats... I'll look at those now.

My personal preference is a nice high Logic, and I like being able to carry a lot (I treasure hunt). I'd lower your Discipline and Aura a bit (Aura really only needs to hit 75 by level 18, unless you get stuck raising someone with 11 spirit, then you need 85 by 18) for more Logic (extra MTP is always good with a pure) And maybe a bit more Intuition (Prime stat, if you're not gonna get past 25-30 you might as well maximize your MTP's)

I still want to be able to do that well in case I don't want to sit around waiting for corpses, but it's something to consider at least.

Should 1x relgion lore, the others are only moderate use at this point.

I went the pure route in GS4 after many years of being a weapon swinger, but once I got to the rift, it was painful to use weapons.

I only dropped some religeon lore to be able to make better raising gems, I'll get that back.

I definitely prefer brig (or at least lbp) for all casters, and holy bolt/webbolt make alternatives to CS attacks.

I totally agree with the religion lores if you go caster route. Once you have the mana to be a pure that is, it improves your 317 a ton, and if you don't mind that chance to spend extra mana on 302 it makes them much more powerful.

I can hardly use 317 on hunts by level 49. If you're not going to make it that far or farther, I see no reason to single in religion lore. It does help 301 a bit, but it forces extra mana from 302 without an equivalent amount of extra damage.

Also, until 15-20, Holy Bolt is a lot of mana compared to bind/swing or 302. If you're going to keep 1x blunt and 1x shield and 1x CM, I just don't think you can afford Spell Aiming without making some serious spell sacrifices. When you drop to become a pure though, you might have enough to keep 2x Spell Aim if you go with 2x spells (or just a bit more than 2x spells).

Everyone's got their own preference, I haven't used a bolt spell since level 12 or so.

Coming from me, who used bolts until 20. Definitely go ward. Just NOT worth 2x spell aim. Go heavy on Cleric spells. You won't miss 211 and 215 that much when you can tear EVERYTHING up with 302 (or undead anyway).
