Do you use a laptop or a desktop? For games and otherwise?

In general, I prefer desktops as virtually every laptop I've ever used gets bogged down in shit, and it's difficult if not impossible to build them from scratch and/or upgrade them after the fact. Plus, gaming-capable laptops tend to be pretty pricey whereas I can build a nice rig one piece at a time and considerably cheaper than an OEM.

However, for portability and vacations, I'd also like a capable laptop. How about you?

You buy parts for cheaper prices than manufacturers? Fuck.

For what it's worth, I use a laptop not by choice for school and have it connected to a 22" monitor, wireless keyboard, and USB mouse. I also have a desktop not at school.

OEMs in the sense that they're selling equipment they themselves purchased from another company, at an increased price, to you. Dell, Gateway, Packard Bell, etc. You can certainly buy individual parts cheaper than they sell them (see http://www.newegg.com) and build it yourself. Harder to do with a laptop, though.

You buying the equipment from the manufacturer as opposed to another company that bought it from the manufacturer. Sites like NewEgg are still a middleman, but don't charge the enormous premium for putting the system together, as you do it yourself.

I've never owned a brand name PC computer. I've always had one put together by myself or my husband.

I use both...for gaming and non gaming purposes. I love having my laptop for traveling. My desktop is the one that I constantly am upgrading.

Desktop of both. But I rarely game anymore and if I do it's a sports game on the PS3. I used to use a laptop and thought I'd like it for traveling and so forth but now that I travel without one I find I relax more and generally am more productive on my trips.

I built a desk-top for games. I have a work-issued laptop for work. I have an older laptop I bought for school. And I have a new laptop I bought for games while I traveled a lot last year.

I always hook my laptops up to a keyboard/mouse. I also use a monitor at my desk at work.

My office is a geek dream room.

I have a high end gaming rig hooked to a 24 inch monitor, and a dell 17 inch monitor laptop sitting on a logitech folding usb keyboard to the left of my desktop so if i play graphicals, I can run my vent and IMs.

Laptop is for traveling for work, though graphicals do not do too well on Verizon's wireless network.

Do you use the TV for watching AVI files/streaming Netflix/etc only, or as an all-purpose monitor?

We've got a 65" LCD in the apartment but I've only hooked the PC up to the 37", which, even through HDMI->DVI (the LCD's max res is 720p), video looks good but text looks a little blurry when trying to use it as a monitor. Thinking maybe it's better @ 1080p..

We have a desktop and a laptop. The laptop is an apple Macbook and that thing is a piece of shit. We have had to take it in 5 times in less then a year because it breaks so much and everytime we go in there are 5 or 6 people there with their own macbooks. It must just be that type because I don't see people bringing in anything else.

No.. the 37" is 720p. The 65" is 1080p, but I haven't hooked it up to a PC yet.

I use a desktop for gaming and I have multiple desktops/laptops I use for work.

My primary gaming desktop is an Intel Core 2 Extreme X9770 overclocked to 3.8 GHz with quad-SLI GeForce 9800 GX2 hooked up to a 30" monitor. It also has two Blu-ray burners and a bunch of other crap.

There isn't a game this thing won't play smoothly on max settings.

I use my desktop for everything. I use my laptop mostly for taking notes and stuff at school, and for travelling. The only game I may play on my laptop is GS, and that's rare even, so I didn't count it. Plus in this type of discussion, I don't really consider GS to be gaming because it's about as resource-intensive as Notepad.

I use it for watching AVI/MKV/OGM/MP4 video as well as DVD, mounted DVD rips, digital cable, console games... everything. The TV's native resolution is 1366x768 when not in 1080p mode so pretty much everything not DVD uses that resolution. Some of the 700MB-ish video files get a little unclear, but not enough to complain about.

Actually SF is a lot more resource intensive that it seems like it should be, though obviously it's nowhere near the level of any 3D game from this decade.

I use an old 2004/2005 Toshiba satellite laptop for just about everything I do. Scratch that, I do use it for everything. Aside the occasional issues w/ the ati graphics drivers crashing I rarely have issues. Helps that I don't bother with porn. Messing with that sh't is only asking to screw your system up.

I also am a bit anal and run a restore program on my registry every few months. As well as defrag the hard drive every week or so. Granted I'm not going to be playing any top of the line graphicals any time soon, but if I want that I'll just play one on my 360 or ps3. HD ftw.

No way, screw SF.

I'd probably like it if I tried it and got used to it, and sometimes the wizard irritates me (my xp bar has been off for fucking years, and I have no clue why. I'm usually nearly becoming before the bar drops from fried to numb). But I fear changing. :/

edit: Oh also, I love how they put that poll out a couple years ago, asking users what front end they used and something like 50 percent said the wizard. But they still won't make any updates for it. :(

I was a die hard Wizard user, but mostly because our old computor sucked and SF lagged. Now that we've upgraded, I have to say I prefer SF, give it a try, if you don't like it, Wizard isn't going anywhere. I *think* part of the reason they don't/can't upgrade wizard is because they don't own it. Its a FE that can be used for many games, I used to use it when I worked for another MUD.

On topic...I use a laptop, a Toshiba something or other, I never have issues with it when I play GS. Hub uses a desk top..he hates the tiny keys of a laptop :tumble:

I think I tried it once, and I was getting bombarded by spam I don't usually have on my screen. It was something with my highlights I think - I have arrivals, departures, disco's etc. on, but only for people on my highlight list since I don't use a separate window for it. And something in SF made like.. everyone highlighted and I don't think I bothered taking the time to figure out how to fix that... just said fuck it and went back to the wizard. lol

I actually I win more often then not in my life. Else wise explain why I've gotten 7 promotions, 5 corporate paid multi state transfers, and a sh't ton of raises and bonuses in the last 4 years. Apparently the corporate world <3's realists like me :)

As for escape, you have to launch it from the web portal. You can't use the desktop launcher.

It's not a product they really support anymore, and it hasn't been an option for me in ages, so I figured it was normal to be unavailable. It happens both at my home computer as well as work. It's probably a Firefox thing. Ah well.
