Been seeing this commercial on TV for a while now. Just wanted to know if anyone tried it? Is it a big hoax, is there some hidden catch?

Seems like it could be an affordable alternative for a home phone.

Not a hoax, we have it and it works just fine. Not expensive at all either, and it has decent sound.

We are using it too. Only problem I have had so far is the incoming calls take like 15 seconds to connect once you pick up the receiver.

Sucks standing there saying, Hello? Anyone there?

edit - other problem was the available Area codes you can choose from. They didn't have our 325 at the time, so we chose a 214 that my sister has in Dallas area.

That affects how much the calls cost for others to call you. So if you get a lot of calls from friends on the home line, make sure you get the local area code.

Wow...someone definitely has been doing a bit of magic jacking in their spare time to know porn stars by name.

Anyway, the only good thing Magic Jack gives you is the ability to plug a conventional phone into a USB port. If you just want free phone calls, you can just get a headset with a Mic and there are several services out there you can use that will let you dial a number and talk. They tend to suck quality wise, but I've used them in Europe and elsewhere and I'll take sucky quality for free over expensive as shit any day.
