I played on GEnie for like 10 minutes. If someone really wants to be a wien about I PlAYED GEMSTONE FOR 41 YEARS I pull that one out, but I really started on AOL.

We didn't have GEnie long, but that's where I got my first fix. I wasn't hooked though until AOL went unlimited. We also had Prodigy and was reminded of it with those ads in the chatroom.

All I remember is that it was free on AOL and I borrowed my sister's laptop on weekends to play. It was right before the wizard came out so not sure of the year. Then, when she lost her laptop (it was the one she used at work), I didn't play again until 1998. That's what I consider my real start date but it was already play.net.

AOL here too. I played for a while then quit then came back right around when they moved it to the web.

I remember those days fondly- when it seemed like Elanthia was HUGE and full of infinite possibilities. When every new spell was this awesome moment. I still love GS, but it'll ever be like that again

I'm thinking it was GEnie for that I started play GS on, but around that time, we had Compuserf?sp? and Prodigy, so it could of been any of the three.

aol when it was on unlimited, started it by watching my older brother playing it....

he used to wake up in the middle of the night to play, and to muffle the sound of the modem he would take his underwear off and put it over the modem.

I was at Clove's house in '95 and he showed it to me on his Mac on AOL. I promptly went and got an AOL account and ran the bill up to like $400. From then I switched around to GEnie and Compuserv and Prodigy before settling back on AOL when they went unlimited, then GS went to the web. Good times.

May '97. Just long enough to get hooked while it was still free to me on AOL. Then the web jump.

Prodigy for me before switching to AOL after being banned from Prodigy and the FBI forced us to change our phone number...

I had my list of BBS's on autodialer back in the day. Well one of them went down and had their number switched and some poor old lady got that number issued to her.

I had called her every day for months and put modem in her ear without knowing it.

GS was actually fun back then.

AOL in '93 until my dad discovered the hundreds of $$ i was racking up.

Then back for a bit in '98 until college. And then back last year!

Damn you, Gemstone...

Prodigy. My friend let me play. I got stuck on the far side of WL looking for the fucking Alchemist for 10 hours.

AOL in 95. I remember playing in Java till either the Wizard came out, or I was told about it. Can't remember if I just wasn't aware of its existence.

Yeah, those were good times. I remember being affronted when it moved to the web and I was required to pay to play. I didn't have a credit card or anything so I had to mooch off my folks, and they used that against me.

Elanthia was technically smaller then, but it felt much bigger and the population was huge (and more condensed instead of butter-over-too-much-breaded). Some people complained about the huge population, but I thought it was great, especially compared to the ghost world that Elanthia is now.

Prodigy, don't remember the year. But damn, that login screen brings back memories. (though I recall it being yellow before they did a color scheme change or something)

My email address, oddly enough, is still a prodigy.net email address, since it was bought by SBC, which then became AT&T. But the email address is actually though Yahoo.

Holy shit @ Prodigy screen.

That's where I started...used to roleplay in the chatrooms and one day saw this dude (guy who used to play Nevrek) pretend to swing a vultite sword in the chat. When I asked WTF it was...he sent me a link to GS. Turns out my brother had been playing for the previous month and helped me get into it.

He was able to kick his CrackStone addiction but I never can. :(

AOL, the day it was released. Had a friend who played on GEnie, and convinced me to start playing. Parents aren't happy when they recieve a $1600 AOL bill in the mail.

I dabbled in gemstone 3 back in 1992 on GEnie. then promptly logged out and had the modem pulled on the computer when my father realized i lifted his credit card to sign up for GEnie. at $6- an hour + Long distance charges.

then i dabbled again back in 1994, thought the game sucked ass and promptly went back to playing Multiplayer Battletech: EGA on GEnie. Especially after going demonic many times. and getting tooled on for going demonic with a drake falchion in my posession. =0

Flash forward to 1997. AOL. I was kind of back to stay. but i was more involved with Battletech. until premium use started. and the Web migration....so i came over with the webusers. remember paybycash.com?

so it's like 1992, 1994, 1997-99 2001-2002. and 2006-now.

lol

long story short? i'd still rather be playing air warrior and battletech online. fuck EA.

B: Remember when you AOL users had to pay a shit-ton of money to use a sprintnet connection? =0

I started on Prodigy. I could only play for a few hours here or there because it was expensive. Mom didn't like those bills.

I remember dying to a cave gnome and praying that someone would come along so I didn't decay and lose my COVETED GOLD RING. I was like level 2.

Started at GEnie during what I later found out was the end of the ICE age. Bills were too high, mother nearly killed me. Started again on AOL as Haidar when it was brought over there. Then started again on Prodigy as Hadiar since I had a comp account. Played pretty consistently until a couple of years ago.

Finally closed my account last year. Haven't looked back.

Good old Aohell. Back when the 'new' $20 for 20 hours plan seemed like a good deal, and yet the 'net bills were still $400 a month. Then they went unlimited, and decided "Shit, too many people playing this simutronics stuff, we better tell them to get the fuck off our servers or something, it's not earning us any more money"
