View Full Version : Odd food marriages

After Stretch's thread, I wanted to start a new thread in which we can all either (1) admit an odd food habit we have or (2) discuss disgusting combination we've seen others eat.
I'll go first:
1) I eat green peas (frozen then nuked to hot) with A-1 sauce.
2) I dip my grilled cheese sandwiches in BBQ sauce.
3) I put ketchup on pot-pies. This one pisses my wife off in particular because she makes home-made, and very tasty, pies. But I think they're better with a little ketchup.
Stretch

1) Ketchup and cottage cheese
2) I'll make a sandwich out of any leftover - including spaghetti
3) Ice cream + corn flakes
I know ranch is a common thing but...
Anytime I make any type of pasta that has marinera my girlfriend empties half a bottle of ranch into it and mixes it.
As for me, I have to have something crunchy with anything soft.
So if I eat pancakes I eat them with tostitos.

1) Ketchup and cottage cheese
My grandpa used to drown his scrambled eggs in ketchup. I realize this is a relatively normal behavior -- but it always disgusted me as a kid and I assume this would do the same.
There is just something about the two textures combining that gives me the willies.

I'll humor you.
When eating at Outback, if we have the cheesy fries, I like to eat them with ketchup and the ranch dressing that comes with it. It totally grosses my husband out so I stick to the ketchup.
I like putting ketchup on my ham and cheese sammiches.

When I was a kid, I used to mix all of my Thanksgiving dinner together before eating (except the stuffing). Mashed potatoes, squash, peas, turkey, and gravy turned into this pale orange lumpy mass on my plate. It tasted great.
When I make raman, I usually end up putting about 3/4 of the bag in the water to cook, and eating the rest crunchy.
I mash my ice cream up with my spoon until it starts to melt and gets to the consistency of soft-serve.
I eat the chocolate on the edges of a Reese's peanut butter cup, then eat the peanut butter inside (those big cup ones are awesome for this).
I make BLTs with mustard instead of mayo.

I normally mix the corn the stuffing the mash and the turkey into one big bowl and chow it. Delicious.
Hmm I haven't had ramen in a while, well since college, although they are horrible for you, I think I'll start getting them again.

The weird thing is -- my friend and I used to do the same in high school (except with a soda instead of a beer). I weighed 30 lbs less in high school. I think I need to eat more mounds of french fries covered in cheese, bacon, sour cream, etc as part of my diet!

As a matter of fact, a long time ago my aunt's boyfriend took us out to eat ice cream and he ordered a plate of fries. We looked at him as though he had three heads. That's how I get mine. Seared rare.. comes out perfect.
I'll add one of my bachelor oddities. I'd cook sauerkraut with either kielbasa or any sort of hot dog in a casing (Ziegler's being my favorite) and reduce it down with three shots of jager added. Then eat it on cuban bread grilled in a George Foreman.

3) Ice cream + corn flakes
Personally, I find cottage cheese, even by itself, inedible. Also, the corn flakes and ice cream thing is pretty popular. Ever had deep fried ice cream?
I mash my ice cream up with my spoon until it starts to melt and gets to the consistency of soft-serve.
I make BLTs with mustard instead of mayo.
I used to always do that with my ice cream. Also, BLTs need no condiments other than possibly more bacon
I thought of one more.
I use peanut butter (creamy of course) in my beef chilli (in the cooking process, not as a topping).
This actually isn't as uncommon as you'd think. I've known other people who use PB. Cocoa is another chili ingredient that is fairly popular but most people wouldn't think of.

I like ordering turkey subs (plain--just the bread/turkey) and adding in either nacho cheese Doritos or Lays chips on top of the turkey and eating it like that, rather than separate from the sandwich. I've gotten a few weird looks, but it's good and essentially the same as not.
Edit: I also like dipping turkey subs (not with the chips inside) in chicken noodle soup. Delicious.

Awesomeness. I haven't had fries with vinegar in a while, but now you got me craving them bad.
For myself, I enjoy dipping my grilled cheese in ketchup or tomato soup, though I've been told that's not that uncommon.
The weirdest thing I can think of that I like are peanut butter and barbecue chip sandwiches. So good!
My friends adore peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches for some reason. Blech!

1. The Worst Food in America
Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing
2,900 calories
182 g fat 240 g carbs
Even if you split this "starter" with three friends, you'll have downed a dinner's worth of calories before your entree arrives. Follow this up with a steak, sides, and a dessert and you could easily break the 3,500 calorie barrier.

My hubby likes to melt cheddar cheese on his apple pie. It grosses my father completely out. I like wasabi with anything. Steak and eggs with a dab of wasabi on my plate. Heaven.
Earlier I had a craving for mashed potatoes with Thai peanut sauce and Thai sweet and spicy sauce on the side. Yum. If there's a sauce out there I don't like, I haven't met it.
Peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches.
Eggs with tabasco and/or ketchup.

My morning smoothie usually consists of carob powder, 1 tbs. peanut butter, frozen banana, and a couple handful of baby spinach leaves.
You can't taste the spinach at all but it's a good way of getting veggies in the morning.
So you know that SNL skit about the shredded lettuce and mayo in a bag? I never understood why it was funny, because I LOVE warn shredded lettuce and mayo. Put it on any sandwich and it's instantly great.
Speaking of sandwiches, I love green olive and cream cheese sandwiches.
I love cottage cheese and tomato too, but with cucumbers, salt and maybe a little sour cream if I have it.
I put creamed corn and canned peas in my mac n cheese.
Those are the only things I can think of at the moment that would turn heads.

I don't find the eggs odd at all, in fact i'd say there were more people i've eaten eggs (or spoken to about this) who used ketchup than those who didn't.
And I LOVE my fries with mayo. Don't bother with ketchup anymore.
I love melting a slice and a half of Kraft american cheese in my beef ramen. It grossed me out when it was first shown to me, but it's damn delicious. And sometimes i'll nuke a couple of hot dogs, cut them up and throw them in. Deliciousness!

I grew up eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. I'm surprised no one said this yet because I thought it was pretty common.
A girl I knew in college would mix her cereal with peanut butter, mash it all up, pour milk on it and put it in the fridge for next morning's breakfast. In the morning it was just a brown soggy mush but she loved it.
Smoke and a pancake?
I never really thought the eggs tabasco/ketchup thing was strange either. However, my husband would block out his view of my plate when I did that, so I guess I got a complex.
More maybe normal maybe not stuff:
Olives soaked in lemon juice.
Garlic cheese grits.
Peanut butter and honey with sour pickles.
Not too many things in the thread have sounded all that odd. If they had, I wouldn't get hungry reading it!

Well, I don't really use a recipe, but I found one online that's really close to what I do. I probably should post it in the recipe thread, but oh well:
Ingredients:
6 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups grits
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs, well beaten
16 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
3 to 4 cloves garlic, finely minced (or more if you want)
cayenne pepper to taste
Preparation:
Bring water and salt to a rolling boil; gradually stir in grits with fork. Cook, stirring constantly, until all water is absorbed. Stir in butter a tablespoon at a time; stir in the beaten eggs, working quickly so eggs will not cook before thoroughly blended into the grits, then stir in the shredded cheese, garlic and a little cayenne pepper. Put into a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes.
Serves 8.
I also top mine sometimes with a mix of shredded cheese and something crunchy... like Japanese bread crumbs or whatever I have around the house. And I melt it and let it get crispy on top. There's lots of toppings you could play with. Cook and then proceed to pig out.
Edited to add: You can also make these with garlic cheese. I just prefer the fresh garlic.

My mom and I used to make bologna and cream cheese sandwiches. A slice of bologna slathered with plain cream cheese, topped with some bread and butter pickles (the sweet rounds), rolled up and stuffed in the mouth. Yumminess.
Ketchup and hot sauce on eggs is not weird. Nor is fried ice cream. Nor is fries with mayo; a really good restaurant around here even does that automatically, calling it Belgian style. I personally think that ketchup on mac and cheese from the box (compared to the properly made stuff that I don't make at home) is totally normal, but my husband thinks I'm nuts.

That sounds SO NUMMY, thanks.
Holy crap that does sound nummy, especially with Panko (the Japanese bread crumbs)

Good on everything.
We need a 'What's the best hot sauce?' thread.
Franks, hands down, no contest.

I grew up eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. I'm surprised no one said this yet because I thought it was pretty common.

Another subscriber of Wendy's Frosty with fries. I love combinations of salty and sweet. Which is probably why I double-dip my McDonald's nuggets. First, they go in honey and then in BBQ sauce. I dip my fries in honey as well. Rarely use ketchup.

Cottage cheese and maple syrup
Cucumbers and vinegar and a dash of sugar
French fries and malt vinegar (but I still prefer ketchup)
First one - yuck
Second one - Delicious. Instead though, slice them thin (like with a mandolin slicer) cover them with vinegar, add 1/4 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and a half tablespoon of cut up ginger. Sweet and sour cucumbers ftw. Gotta let them sit and absorb the flavor for about 30 minutes though.
Third one - best way to eat fries.
I'll put A-1 sauce on just about anything. I'll dip potato chips in it, same with Heintz 57 sauce. I'll dip string cheeze in it or hell...a grilled cheese sandwich.
Popcorn with Tabasco on it. My fucking god its good.
Milk mixed with honey...kinda like chocolate milk only with honey.

Tartar sauce and fries is really good, and tartar sauce and ketchup and fries is even better.

You are seriously the first person I have ever encountered outside of my family that eats those. I use bread and butter pickles for the most part these days, but sometimes I go old school and break out the hamburger dills.

I dunno where this falls in but I'm poor (I thought this would be gross at first but hell I've eaten rabbit eyeballs) and had the house to myself so I found:
16oz of elbow noodles boiled em up.
Cream of corn
can of carrots
4 stalks of celery
1/2 cup parm
mixed into a roux (sp?) of about 3 tablespoons butter and flour and 1 1/2 cups milk. Then mixed all together and tossed into a baking dish with bread crumbs and more parm on top. Baked until it crisped up at 350.. about 45 minutes.
And I can't stop eating it... of course I'm putting the Cajun A-1 Sauce on it but ffs. Delicious.

That doesn't sound weird at all, it sounds good! Although I have no idea WTF a roux is. How do you pronounce it?
