View Full Version : Surprisingly not bad

I heard a food combination on the radio the other day that sounded utterly disgusting, so of course I had to try it. The good folks over at DC101 married the most maligned meat product (Spam) with its cheese counterpart (Velveeta) in a mix of gooey panini awesomeness.
It's surprisingly not bad. Maybe the crunch takes away from the fact that I'm eating what ten minutes ago looked like aborted fetus swimming in yellow paint, but I'm tempted to make another one.
Although I held off on adding mayo like they did, because that would just be gross.

Hahaha, I'll take your word on that. That sounds rough.

My exhusband used to like adding spam to macaroni and cheese with a little bit of salsa....
Why, dear Lord, why?!!

During beach week two years ago, I added tuna to my Easy Mac, and I'll never forget my buddy's girlfriend's reaction.
"Ew, gross! Vinh, what the hell are you doing?!"
I thought it was normal...

Tuna fish is a banned food in this house. BANNED!
But I know lots of people who add it to mac and cheese. Hell, they even make a Tuna Helper that is white cheddar and pasta.

You know Spam ain't all that bad (healthiness aside) for a lot of things. Used that shit all the time when I was teenager and throughout the college years.
I glanced at it passing down the aisle the other day.. seems to be rather expensive now as compared to before. /shrug

rofl, that crossed my mind after I posted, but the original intent was just to see how many people are grossed out by Spam.

Solid tuna is always in my house unless I go overboard on it. I usually just dump the can into a bowl with some Newman's Italian and Tabasco and awayyyyy I go.

I'd never eat it -- but I know I eat shit that likely disgusts other people.

Well if you eat it raw. You gots to fry it up girl. After my dad left us fried bologna was a staple meal. With ketchup!

Okay. And then it tastes like warm kitty food. Gross.

Spam is actually made from far less objectionable meat than bologna and hot dogs.
Doesn't mean I eat it, though :)

Yum. Chop it up and throw in some fried up potato and onions and fry it up in a big cast iron skillet to make some nice homefries/hash. Then just mix it all up in a bowl with two over easy eggs and some tobasco and chow.

Pork shoulder = nasty imo.
Tuna = nasty imo.
I remember velveta shells and cheese plus salsa being awesome though. My ex's dad used to make that pretty often.

I eat Spam often and think it gets a bad rap. CT, my family makes that food your ex-husband makes too. I also add tuna to mac and cheese. My mom was welfare-eligible poor growing up so I guess her eating habits rubbed off on me.

It's the spam that was added that killed it for me. I honestly, really and truly don't like it. I like macaroni and cheese with lots of stuff... ham, tuna, salsa, marinara sauce, etc. But when he added the cooked up bits of spam, I threw up in my mouth and walked outside to get a slice of pizza. I was offended that he made that in my kitchen while proclaiming that he was a good cook. Le barf.

He'd keep spam in the house and cook it up with eggs, potatoes, hot sauce, all manner of concotions and it would be so fucking delicious. Haven't tasted the stuff since I was a kid though, don't really miss it, but I do remember it being quite tasty.

I haven't had spam in years, but I grew up eating it since it was cheap. I think my mom used to bake it with brown sugar on it, or fry it in slices for sandwiches. It wasn't that bad, but it just sounds disgusting now.

I grew up relatively poor, but I think we had SPAM maybe once. Of course, I was subjected to eating a wide variety of suspicious animals (moose, bear, deer, squirrel) and organ meats (deer heart + stuffing = awesome, by the way).

You know, I've lived in NY for the better part of 8 months now and I haven't found any pizza that has wowed me. I still go with Papa John's for delivery. Where the fuck is this amazing New York pizza??!

You wound me... deeply. I can't tell you where in NY, but if you're ever in Philly, I'll show you some of the best pizza ever friggin created. FWIW we also have the best cheese steaks.

Never tried Spam myself, but it doesn't look appetizing.
I grew up on Velvetta though, I like that. Cheese dips, and mac and cheese etc.. Good stuff.

Spam is ridiculously popular in Hawaii. They even sell it at McDonald's. I've never been brave enough to try it though.

They make this sushi type thing with spam, rice and seaweed and you can get it all over the islands. Holy shit it's delicious. I love Spam.
Also, I put tuna in my macaroni and cheese, or other canned meat. I'll also mix a can of chili with mac and cheese. Learned all that stuff from my dad. After my mom died and before he got a nanny for us, he'd make my brother and I a ton of crockpit dishes and different macaroni dishes. He also did a lot of "breakfast for dinner" stuff where we'd have eggs and waffles for dinner! I have to admit pretty much all of my soup and stew recipes come from my father, as well as a majority of my crockpot ones.

I refuse to eat spam but I also don't eat bologna or hot dogs. Unless I'm at Yankee stadium.

Foods are quite something. People just want to invent new recipes just for the sake of quenching one's appetite. Sometimes they would overdo it.

They are no longer bots.
It seems American labor is cheaper than creating bots.
