View Full Version : Unusual Board Games
I was talking with a friend about games we played years ago. I had Feds and Heads and Lost in Space. I also gave my sister Elvis Monopoly.
Just thought it would be fun to recall any fond or unusual board games that you used to play and/or still play.

Haunted House was fun. Mouse-trap ruled. Knightmare Chess is a good one to. And of course; Clue, Shoots & Ladders, Candy Land, Stratigo, an Shogun.
Edit: And how could anyone forget "The Game of Life." No matter how much they wanted to...
Candy Land was the only game I ever let my daughter win. I figured, after that, she should learn to lose gracefully. (yes even that young) Oddly, it worked.
I love all those games too. I really am a fan of board games.

There was this Stock Market trading game I played once that was sort of like Monopoly only super fast. It was weird.
Also one time I played a version of Monopoly that was based on Atlantic City!

Arkham Horror is an interesting game based on Lovecraft/Cthulhu mythology where it's you (all the players collectively) vs. the game, and the game has a pretty good shot of winning.

Best friend's daughter. And I think she'll be complimented by this post. ::grin:: Mission accomplished. I think she does some fun things also.

Hero's Quest, Battle Masters, DnD and Axis and Allies were some of my favorites growing up. One I never owned, but wish I had, was Ultimate Stratego, was a 4 player version.
I wish I could get my hands on a copy of Hero's Quest with all the expansions. Just for collector's purpose. And without having to go through ebay.

Othello was a good one, and there was the strange fucked up game called Duel, where you would roll dice inside a grid. So if a 5 was up, you'd roll 5 squares and so fourth. Recently, I've become fond of Ninja Burger. The object, be part of a ninja food delivery service and become the branch manager to win.

Mouse trap was great. Sometimes we didn't even bother playing, we'd just set it up and set it off.
Sometimes my extended family plays a lot of board games. We love Balderdash and Apples to Apples.

I have fun with Apples to Apples when i visit my family. Granted, I lose all the time.
Has anyone ever heard of one of the games I mentioned in my initial post. That one being Heads and Feds? It was hilarious.
I'm a huge Scrabble, Boggle and Trivial Pursuit player, however those are pretty common. I do love them though.

There was also this game called Bermuda Triangle and you would have this magnetic storm roam the board while your magnetic ship would try to sail past the cloud without getting sucked into it. After a while we stopped rolling the dice and just spun the cloud to see who it would screw up.
It's funny the games you find amusing as a kid. :D
Never heard of Heads and Feds.
The games I had as a child growing up were Candyland, Go To The Head of the Class, Chutes n Ladders, Cherry Tree, Clue, Life, Stratego, Battleship, Monopoly (several different versions), Life, Risk, Othello, Pente (still have that one), Mad (one of my favorites beside Stratego), Operation (got the new one for my son), Sorry, Uno, Skip-bo, Yhatzee, Kismiet, and of course card games and dominoes.
PS.
The gambling wheel/betting line on Life has dominated the Life game several times. Especially when drinking.

Fuck yes that just made me think of Freaks and Geeks.
Actually, it was called Feds and Heads. I had it backwards. Here's a link to the game. Obviously, we didn't play this sober.

I love Munchkin, though it's really a card game and not a board game. My roommate as an impressive looking board game called "FIREBALL ISLAND," but I've never played it.

For a while I used to have a regular group of friends that would play diplomacy on occasion. It can make for a hell of a party game, especially once everyone is to a point when they can be convinced NOT to destroy Austria-Hungry in the first turn.
As a plus, I have been able to drag lots of non-gamers and girlfriends into playing, because there is no dice, Diplomacy is all about lying to one's enemies and screwing over one's allies!

Ok, this sounds like a game I could really come to love.

My boyfriend and I used to have a game night with our friends every Friday and Diplomacy was, hands down, the most popular game for the exact reason you mentioned. All strategy and manipulation.. once people get drinking it's hysterical.
One time we decided that each team had to make their King or Queen out of a paper bag (puppet style) and that was how all diplomacy was conducted, the puppets talking to each other.

We used to play Diplomacy on the forums.
I bet if people were interested, someone would GM it.
I'm not getting involved, but it'd be fun to follow another thread.
