I know Sean is pounding the pavement right now. I just got fired on Wednesday. I'm falling back on my Sea Time and going Merchant Marine. Nothing would help my marriage more than time apart anyway. The paper work is almost in and I will be in Maryland at the Academy in Piney Point? Piney? ASAP.
Anyway, who lives in Maryland?
Sean PM me your work experience, just general I'm too tired to read all the posts.
T
Wasn't fired, but was laid off (net result is the same though).
And I'm living in MD again after spending 3 years in FL and 5 in NY.

Got fired on August 8 and it sucked. Finally landed a new job on Oct. 22nd.

I was laid off in Jan of this year from Kodak closing down the New Business Development office I worked at. I'm currently going to school, but finding anything in the South Bend area that pays what I use to make looks like slim pickings. Once I'm done with school, we're either going to pay off this house in full and rent it out or sell it if the market can take it; then we'll be moving somewhere else within IN.

Husband's hours just got cut, and I dropped my workload to 2 days a week to take care of the baby. The place I work at is hurting really bad and they're keeping me on payroll as a favor to me. After finding out about Scott's cut wages we'll both be looking for new jobs tonight. I looked a bit on Craigslist but like everyone else said - slim pickings.
I applied for an outside steel sales position. Here's hoping.

Me...
I expected it after they bought my company after my one year contract was up.
After 2 1/2 years, I was surprised I was laid off as my numbers were incredible, and was adding to new biz and upselling my existing base, but over 100 went down, mostly executives and such from all the companies they bought in the last 5 years, but I expected it. I was on salary, the Boston sales guy was on commission. Easy answer there.
I didn't expect I'd get a year's severance, so in no rush, but still been floating out my resume to a couple different fields.
Still on very good terms with them.
I could go to work for the competition as my non compete expired, and is a lot of interest out there, but i'm enjoying the time off actually, haven't had that in 20 years.

My mother is getting laid off at the end of the year. She's been the vice president of international banks for over 20 years.

I got laid off August 22. I'd been with the company for over six years before the spineless, limp dick owner sold it out of state. From what I understand we weren't even going to be told we were losing our jobs until the day it happened. I think we got like three and a half weeks notice and I'm still looking.

Not fired but relocated to NC & have spent the better part of a year unable to find a job. Couple interviews but no bites(well the minimum wage job was offered but 60 miles rt/day really isn't worth it at that kind of pay).
Interview yesterday the lady told me 'well you know the market is just SO competetive, I had no idea because a year ago it wasn't like that'.
le sigh.

I've not been fired yet, but I just found out that unless buisness takes a major up turn. As in +45% or better by the end of the year my store will be closed. And after 5 years, 9 states, and 7 transfers I will be let go. woo

I always hear "The economy is rough" , "People are losing jobs" , etc but I never really see it. Probably because college towns are their own little bubble. Amazing to see how many people it actually is hitting here in the PC.

I had to leave my old job to move to where I'm at now (boyfriend got a job out here).
Business for me has slowed down by a ridiculous amount, so I'm working a shitty data entry and customer service job to help make ends meet. Been applying to every resort and restaurant in the area trying to get a job and no one is biting. Even though I'm offering myself as a general sous chef with pastry expertise (at the same pay rate as just a sous chef), people just aren't hiring.
Wanted to open my own storefront for the bakery in the coming year. Looks like that's not going to happen :/

Fuck ... a years severance. You corksucker. I was happy with a weeks worth after 9 years.
And it sucked because they made me come the entire week to "help" the new people taking my job.
I have not been fired since a high school job where we 'borrowed' the company truck for a weekend. Without asking.
Was a fun weekend though.

I've been fired once during high school.
Was doing line cook/prep work and shucking oysters for a restaurant locally and on ladies night they wanted me to go unclog the girls shitters from all the tampons. Which is fine ... but he wanted me to wear a stupid hat while I did it.
So I took his expensive knives whilst doing said prep work and was banging them on the stainless steel counter in between chopping the wtf ever it was I was chopping and he'd peek his head around the corner every time just in time to see me chopping my shit.
After about the fifth time he had an umpire melt down and tossed me.

Told my company I wanted to look elsewhere for the better of my and my family's future on Sept. 29th . Fired October 2nd. New job October 15th at Sound Advice. November 1st Sound Advice/Tweeter is bought out by liquidators and is dying.
Good news is I'm getting the best commission possible when people who don't have money are spending it anyways. I've made a month's salary at Office Depot in a week with SA. Going to keep shoving it down people's throats until I can survive until the new year, I guess.

I was out of a job in June, I pretty much quit because I was doing the work of about four people and wasn't getting paid more, I put in resumes to a bunch of places, I got picked up by a national catering company even at decent pay doing less work than I was doing, I got the job within a month.
I'm lucky, I know I am.

I resigned from my job last year, 1 month after we got a mortgage for our first home. I had worked for 7 years for that employer. There was no away around my resignation, it was a screwed up situation. I classify it as a firing, even though it wasn't technically.
I have spent the last 8 months floating from job to job (4 employers, total) that didn't work out. In September I started the job I will be retiring from, and we are finally pulling ourselves back out of the financial hole we ended up in.
Hope everyone else ends up with something promising as well.

One of the things people have not mentioned yet is temporary work. Sean, I imagine you can type pretty fast with your GS and WOW background.. and maybe some accounting with your hotel management background? You should try an office temp job. When I left Hilton, I went there and took 3-4 tests and got a quick position (which I ended up turning down to help out a friend open up a hotel in Gainesville) by the next day. Not sure if they are hiring, but they still send shit to my junkmail box.

My company is laying off pretty heavily right now. We've shrunk from 500 employees in August of 06 to now about 190 employees.
They just laid somebody off 2 weeks after throwing him a 20 year anniversary party. The man is 66 year old, has been working for the company for 20 years and instead of forcing a retirement, they gave him a month severance and sent him packing.
They laid off the employee with the longest tenure in the company about a year ago. He started the day the company started, stayed in basically the same job, and just did his work. 35 years, started when he was 20 years old.
I don't think I could make those decisions.

I worked for about two years after Justin was born but found I wasn't ahead with child care costs. I then left the bank (I was miserable in that job anyway) and we decided to tighten our belts. For the last three years I have been working temp jobs and love it. I have filled in for a historical interpreter several times at a local museum, I have worked the cash at the liquor store during Christmas and sold Pepperidge products from a table in the mall at Christmas as well. People have asked me if I mind giving up my career for such piddly little jobs. Fuck my old career. I hated it. I love working with people and that's what I do, even if it's sporadic. I LOVE working private parties as a bartender. New Years Year events can big in the big bucks.
And the best? I get to hang out with my little guy alot more. What sucks? I have no maternity leave now that I'm pregnant and things will be tight until the baby comes. C'est la vie.

I've hit up all temp agencies in the area. None are hiring for office or admin but I can go sling manufacturing for 6.79 in no a/c ware houses in st pete.
I've applied at some hotels for accounting/night auditor shit but no response.

We had two salaried accountants in my area quit in the last month, and we're not rehiring so I figure I'm safe for at least a while.
Of course, since we're down from 6 to 4 with no real reduction in work load, I may want to shoot myself.

I never see anyone lose their job... Well, then again its pretty fucking hard in the military. They've put boatspaces back in though, so most of the bonuses are going away and they'll actually begin denying reenlistments for certain jobs as they fill up so I guess that would sort of be a way to lose your job.

Our Chairman of the Board gave a 3rd quarter talk about a week ago. He said that relative to our competition that we are positioned pretty well. Out of all the metrics some were higher some were lower - but averaged about right on target, we are still set to be in bonus territory - he said either slightly lower or slightly higher than last year.
But given the economic climate, they are looking at ways to reduce expenses. For example, travel, consultants, memberships (not sure what he meant by that..) and will be eliminating some positions.
I was given a promotion yesterday, so I'm thinking that I'm safe for now. My husband's company is not faring well at all. Not sure what will happen there.

I feel the same way. When you read in the news about how the economy is rough, it's typically presented only as a number, as if that number is meant to encapsulate all that it means for an economy to be in bad shape.
Hearing stories about how this is affecting people personally definitely provides a lot more perspective. It's very troublesome to hear.

Same thing happened to Hoover. Arguably, FDR didn't do a whole lot different from Hoover, except FDR went out and charmed people, he let them see him, and that made the people feel better where Hoover sort of hid himself away.
People just want something different when things go bad; even if it is only a different attitude.

Hoover was more for leaving businesses to do their own thing and not have government step in. Thus when the stock market crashed there was no "net" to stop the crash. Hoover was also slow in re-acting to the crash believing that the US economy will turn itself around on its own.
FDR immediately set up government projects to prop up the economy and try to get people back on their feet financially.

You have any sea time? If so check your DD214 to make sure it listed.
If ya need any help sorting through the paperwork let me know. I just finished my package. One thing....you will need some money to get started.
$140 for your MMD card
$132 for your TWIC card
~60 for a drug screen
and unless you get in good with a union that will pay for your required safety training, that is about $1100 (40hr general safety course)
Oh and you'll need a physical.
Don't let this all discourage you there are lots of MM jobs right now. I'm meeting with a bigwig from the Piney Point Acadamy on Monday and it looks like they are going to pay for the training. Wish me luck.
I'll send you link that breaks it all down...can't find it right now.
Here it is.

click the getting started MMD wizard link. It's a powerpoint explains almost everything.

When I was out on maternity leave, my position was eliminated at my company. I was an Assistant General Manager for a hotel. They got rid of 35 AGM jobs, mine being one of them.
When I got back they threw me into crap work at another hotel with really shitty hours. My first day back after being out for 3 months, they had me on a 10 hour shift. Then it was 9 hours, 10 hours, 10 hours, 9 hours....and it wasn't normal type hours. It was 12p-9p, 10a-8p, one day they had me work 7a-6p when my hubby gets off at 7a so they knew I couldn't make it on time and we had to play pass the baby on the side of the road.
I was miserable and couldn't take being away from my newborn daughter, so I decided to leave. I gave my 2 week notice and the person who was my interim supervisor pretty much said "I knew you weren't going to stay...I had you pegged." Makes me wonder if they took bets on being able to chase me away by having me work those shit hours.
Steve worked for the same company so he put his notice in when I did because they were jerking us around so much. That was about a month ago and the pickings are really slim up here in northeast Florida. I actually have been putting in for part time night work because I want to be home with my baby during the day, but don't mind doing some work in the evenings.
I have an interview next Thursday at Blockbuster and I am actually VERY excited about it. I am a huge movie buff and being able to work part time at night there plus get the perks of free movies is soooooo awesome.
I just look at Daliana and know that leaving work was the right decision though because everytime I had to deal with some dickhead at work, I kept kicking myself and saying how I could be home with her instead of being cussed at by some asshole.

Do bus boys get tipped out at restaurants out of curiosity?
Typically yes...the bartenders and bus boys both get tipped a percentage based on the total sales the server had. Regardless of what the server made, that percentage is locked in.

I might have to pick up a bus boy job then. I did recently not get hired for fucking dish washer at a joint... go figure. I'm that desperate.
The best job bussing would be like Sweet Tomatos salad buffet. There is always a waiting line and high turnover in a huge place and people always leave tips to the people that keep coming to get your empty dishes.
