I'm looking for anyone who owns a new style self mana item. I'd like these people to, if possible, keep a running tally of total attempted activations on their items, and then the total number of backlashes (curse attempts). I've heard people offering that their items hardly ever backlash, however, mine seems to be quite spiteful. I'm not sure if this is a function of it having a higher level spell (Invisibility, 16th) than most other items. Any additional information from other owners would be quite helpful.

Right now, I'm at:
15. Found "As you rub your brigandine, a scintillating black aura engulfs you. You realize too late that something is terribly amiss." 100 times.
16. Found "As you rub your brigandine, a scintillating purple aura engulfs you." 346 times.
446 attempted activations. 346 successful, 100 failed.

100/446 = 22.4% failure rate = I probably should have stuck with glass amulets.

My brig, surprisingly didn't backlash much, however i don't have anything saved to help you compare my set to yours etc.

I didn't use any of mine enough to get solid data like that. But I didn't notice any of my new style items back-lashing much either.

As I told Adam, i ran two quick tests with two of mine...

Self mana invis, level 80 cleric - 100 percent success (10 of 10)

Self mana prayer, level 43 rogue - 90 percent success (9 of 10) - made the warding check though.

10 attempts isn't really much to go on though.

While mine isn't exactly self mana, I have 4x a day 130 that uses the self mana formula to activate. It takes 60 mana when successful.

Of my testing...

Angry curse - 13
Success - 15
Formula shows, but no curse or transport - 9

Capped rogue with 50 MIU.

I don't track this stuff, but I disagree.

I simply don't have the experience Adam is reporting, and 2 PCs of vastly different classes and magic item training, having 95 percent success with both IS indicative.

Activation is static, its profession/level/skill/lore whatever + d100.

Over the YEARS i owned this stuff, I simply don't have the failure rate he's reporting, nor can I explain it.
