Many people will get hostile torwards you if they know you are a thief, even if you haven't actually stolen from them!
But is it really such a bad thing? How hard is it to close your containers?
People argue that it isn't worth training in as you never make any money from it and it just annoys people. :nono:
I have edited this text to cut out the boring stuff.
>look khe
You see Lord Kheiyo the Battle Mage.
He appears to be a Halfling.
He is average height and appears to be very young. He has clouded silver eyes and tanned skin. He has short, wavy silver hair with a white streak running through it. He has a small goatee.
He has several painful-looking scars across his chest, and a scar across his face.
He is wearing a charcoal grey spidersilk cloak with an obsidian clasp, some silvery white leather, a jet black eel skin sack, a faceted peridot necklace, a coral-bound leather Adventurer's Guild badge, a wide gold ring, a long white silk scarf, a gold and beryl earcuff, some thick soft cotton socks, a belt pouch, a ruby amulet, a jade-inlaid blue starstone band, a dark grey linen belt, and a baby blue samite bandana.
>
You reach into Kheiyo's eel skin sack and pull out an uncut diamond.
You do not believe anyone noticed you slip out of hiding.
>

You couldn't find anything worth taking. Maybe you should offer Kheiyo a donation instead.
You notice Poyye turn her head in your direction.
You fail to slip from hiding unnoticed.
You do not believe anyone noticed you slip out of hiding.
Total: 6x Uncut Diamonds, 5x Uncut Emeralds, 2x Uncut star-of-Tamzyrr diamonds
Afterwards: You are carrying 69229 silver between notes and coins.
Two minutes work, not bad!

Owned. I like picking pockets. If for nothing else but RP. Some of my best RP has come from either getting caught picking pockets, or having someone pick mine.

I thought I saw somewhere that hiding actually does not offer any benefit to picking pockets.
Also, if someone is using SF with a Story and Room window both up, it will show you blinking in and out of the 'Also here' list - a big give away that you are picking pockets.

The same goes for people containers. If they have that container's window open it will blink as you take stuff out of it.

As for the refreshing SF windows, I don't know about the people appearing and disappearing, but I know the rogues on the official boards bitched for MONTHS before something was done about it. It ended up being that the GM in question had be misinterpreting what we were saying all along. I never did understand what exactly was fixed, but I stopped noticing people closing their containers when I wasn't caught and people quit bitching on the boards, so apparently it was fixed.
If I remember right and I probably don't what they did was put a delay on the item "disappearing" in the container window when it got pulled.

I had my rogue master gambits so I could steal then put the loot away without anyone noticing. I only got caught once on Teras, when I decided to get gutsy and pick Nindy, bad idea I spent a short stint of my trip on Teras webbed and I think someone cast sleep at her ( don't really remember I just remember it being hell for a few days) I say if a container is open, it's fair game.
I think picking pockets is a valid line of work. My only problem is the people that won't roleplay when it happens. My rogue doesn't pick pockets, but she did catch someone taking a crystal amulet from her (normally everything is closed on my characters except my cloak because that's where I keep the tacky toolkit and I don't keep anything special in the cloak), but when he'd discovered I'd seen him, he ran off. He kept running off each time she'd walk into a room. I got zero chance to roleplay it out and that was the frustrating part, not the lost amulet. She would never turn anyone in for stealing, but I would like it if they stayed around long enough to at least see what my character's reaction will be. That's the part that annoys me about stealing; not what they got.

When someone picks your pocket in real life, do they typically stick around to chat with you about it?

That pretty much sums it up for me too. I really hate when they are caught and immediately log off as well.

True, but in real life you might also be able to grab their wrist and restrain them a moment. We don't have to play completely by real life rules. It's just more fun when a thief tries to talk their way out of it.

No, but I figure most people choose to pickpocket in the game for other reasons than just making money. So, basically, yes I expect them to stay around and have some sort of interaction if they're caught. It's sad to see all roleplay flying out the window in most every situation. And, yes, there is still roleplay in GS or I'd be gone.

And if you're in town the thief can run to the constable to accuse you. If you wait a while to catch them outside of town they can report you for unconsented CvC.
Only way to properly punish a thief is with a very quick macro with the challenge theft verb. That or just kill them and eat the fine.

Yeah, the thief can report in RT but what are they going to report with?

Container windows still show the stolen item in the container until you look in it. Even Inv Full shows the item. You must look in the container.
I think there's a timer on it, it'll refresh after a while automatically. But I'm not sure.

You also have to understand. A majority of the people that catch a thief, don't stop to RP... They just implode them and move on with their lives.

While true, many thieves are also griefers, and have no intention of RPing in the first place. Many times that I have been stolen from I've tried to interact with the thief, and they either go sit at a table and don't respond to hails(talk about lame), or they just instantly jump straight to the whole "yeah, what are you gonna do about it bit".
My violent reaction to many thieves has come about precisely BECAUSE they seemed to have no interest in RPing, so I gave them what they wanted.
I thank the few on both sides who actually do care to have an RPed situation occur.

Nobody said it needed to be an RP tool. But this is an RP game, and if you get caught stealing, why not RP instead hiding at a place that you can MECHANICALLY not be confronted, but realistically could? That's lame.

That's not even possible in real life, unless a pickpocket happens to have 6 feet of reinforced concrete built into a saferoom that opens only form the inside.

It depends on how much you see him steal. If you were only carrying 1 silver, and that's all he took, you aren't allowed to kill him because that would be a disproportionate response. And everybody knows only bad roleplayers kill thieves. You are supposed to engage in witty commentary that amuses all around.
In this case, the only reaction within policy would be a dirty look, such as the GLARE verb.

I guess it was different in my case, because if I feared retaliation (most cases I didn't, considering I picked my targets well) I would just go invisible via imbed, fog away and 204 myself, or just 220 for a while.
Although in most cases the people I was stealing from could have never done anything about it anyway. They were usually vastly lower level than me or dead. Usually both.
Being an empath-thief was good fun.

It contributed to me eventually being banned, however. When you very blatantly steal from corpses and generally cause disaster wherever you go, it generates a lot of REPORTs (as unwarranted as they may be) and the GMs get tired of you.

You pulled that trick on one of my characters once. I don't know, I sort of thought it was funny. Anyway, it makes sense and is really totally legitimate. On top of that, shouldn't you get tipped for rescuing people anyway?
Plus it adds another level to being rescued from the field:
