I suffered some very minor roof damage from Gustav (a bunch of shingles blew off, that's pretty much it), and I'm getting estimates of like $8000-9000.

Now I really don't know anything about roof work, but that seems pretty ridiculous, as they're wanting to replace the entire roof over maybe a few dozen scattered shingles.

Are they trying to just gouge the fuck out of me or what?

If I were to just buy some shingles and slap them up on there (and fill in the nail holes from where the tarp was installed), will that effectively do the same thing these douches are wanting $8,000 for? Or is there more to it than that that really does make it cost these ridiculous amounts?

As far as I know there's nothing wrong with the plywood under the shingles and whatever else is up there. Just some shingles missing.

Does seem ridiculous, if the plywood is fine... and otherwise your roof is structurally sound.

Do the estimates refer to anything else besides the shingles?

One Layer: 30.63 squares @ $45 each = $1378.35
Extra Layers (which is crossed out for some reason, but the blanks after are still filled in): 18' Valley Metal @ $3 per = $72
Felt: 30.63 Felt squares @ $20 per = $613
Install Roof: 33.66 squares @ $145 per = $4880.70
Metal Edge: 237 @ $2 per = $474
Pipe Boot: 2 small @ $15 per = $30
Dumpster: 30.63 squares @ $15 per = $459

SUBTOTAL: $7907.70
Tax: $237

==============

TOTAL: $8144.70

Last week some guy going door to door came by asking about the roof (he was from FL but says he's licensed and insured), so I let him do an estimate too and it came to roughly $5,000, with $2,400 of that being labor, and the rest being materials which I'd buy at Lowe's, which was 21 squares (which came out to $1633.70), plus he said he had about $800 worth of materials on him for the rest of the squares, I forgot how much exactly. So $3,200 for labor and the materials he had (which came out to a little less than what Lowe's was charging), and the other $1600 was me buying the remainder of the stuff from Lowe's. He said he's trying to save people money of course, but he had a truck full of Mexicans with him when he came by to do the estimate, so...yeah.

I was hoping that your roof looked like a goatse.

Glad it's only minor damage, but that would be funny in 10 years...

The truck full of Mexicans kinda gave me that feeling.

Btw for some reason at first glance I thought your Obama Jesus avatar was Shawn Michaels.

If I had a big goatse hole in my roof, I'd paint goatse hands on the intact part of the roof . Then put a red tarp over the big roof anus.

"This is your captain speaking. If you look down to your left, you will see the goatse roof."

let the mexicans do the work, say you'll pay when it's done, and then call INS.
