Got laid off so I am leaving for Australia tomorrow morning to go on a walkabout. Never been and going solo. Has anyone ever been down there and able to offer suggestions for can't miss things?
I am going to be down there for about 6 weeks, and I am more of an outdoors kind of person, so going to shows in the city aren't my cup of tea.
And cups of tea are also not my cup of tea.
Good hostels and good bars are things I am looking for as well.

You must be single if you can afford to go for a 6 week walkabout after just being laid off.

Of course I am single, I ain't no sucker. I saved up the money to go by not paying rent for the last 4 years.
edited: that homeless picture totally got me good. I swear there is normally a roof over my head, I just don't have to pay for it. House sitting and squatting FTMFW

:(
I am not going to get into how I live, but my family lives six times zones away on the mainland. I make certain life choices involving my living situation that most people can't live with, but I am able to save money.
Yes, some times people pay me to live in their house while they are on vacation.
Yes, I had a real job as a biologist, and I will have another in a few months
Yes, sometimes I have to sleep in my car
Yes, sometimes I camp out for a few days
and yes, sometimes I pay for housing by offering trade skills, ie carpentry, auto-repair, ect.
So quiet down, bitches

Thanks Dad.
Just so you know, I cut off 7 inches of hair yesterday. I now look like a respectable member of society and will be taking advantage of all the drunken college girls on travel abroad programs paid for by their parents.

Looking like and actually being are two different things, as you clearly illustrate.
But hey.. have fun.
I was talking to CT and to settle something we need to know if everyone got laid off or just the scuzzy guys who don't always have access to running water and electricity?

Just me, but 1.) Budget cutbacks have reduced the staff from 10 to 3 in the past 5 years, 2.) I was the last full time hire and 3.) I was leaving in 2 months. So it wasn't a real shocker.
And do I look that bad?

Depends on where you're going and where you're traveling. I live in Australia so if you want specifics lemme know. It's a big country, approx the same size of the continental US so without specifics would be hard to tell you where to go or what to do.

Don't be so suburban. It's the new millennium. Gay, straight... it's all the same now. There are no more lines.

Ooooh Australia! Have fun. Few tips...Before you go around blasting the kangaroos from your rental truck, make sure you do it in non agricultural areas where the Animal Welfare Organization of Australia will likely monitor. Other than that you'll most likely want a shotgun because its a lot more fun to nail them on the go in your car, save the sniping skills for the koalas.
Secondly, while you're in the non agricultural areas (just avoid them, really), go to Wester Australia or Queensland for the best prostitutes. They get a lot of island and Thai slave women there and they'll do whatever and the police has your back. However, bring your own coke since its like $400/g there.
Other then that have fun, Australia is full of fun.
Good luck,
Stephen
P.S. if you know you're going to pass out, don't do it outdoors (and definitely not near any undeveloped land).

Wish I was going w/ you, but my exodus to Australia isn't due for another year or two :( even then I'll be heading there by way of sail and I won't be comeing back. So have fun, stay buzzed, and keep out of jail(unless thats your thing). You should really consider blogging your trip. check in every now an again and say, "Hey! I just pissed in a kangaroo's pouch today, and man was it ticked!" or "Hey guys! Who would of guessed but wallabies are F'n awesome when they are drunk and/or stoned!" or some such.
Best of luck.
