Three people check into a hotel room. It costs $30.00. They each pay $10.00.
After checking in. The clerk realizes they qualified for a coupon for $5.00 off. On the way to their room, he decides to keep $2.00 for himself. He pays them each back $1.00.
Each of the people who has checked in has now payed $9.00, per person, for the room. A sum total of $27.00. The clerk kept $2.00 for himself. Adding $29.00 to $2.00 equals $29.00.
What happened to the other $1.00?

Nothing. They paid 27.00 for a 25.00 dollar room, and the clerk charged them an extra 2.00.
Room Charge = 25.00
Clerk Fee = 2.00
Total Charge = 27.00
Per person = 9.00

Right, and none of the original $30 is missing. $25 is in the clerk's register, $2 is in the clerk's pocket, and $3 is in the hands of the people who checked in.

The key is the wording of the math problem. You should be subtracting the $2 to get to $25 not adding it trying to get to $30.

might as well turn this into a pic post. But yes, its all about the wording. You subtract 2 dollars instead of adding 2. The 25 is in the register, 5 is taken, out, thus the room is paid for.
