I've been looking through play.net and krakiipedia for information, and neither seem to give a definitive answer on how many ranks of survival/perception is enough.

My question is this:

Is there a number of ranks I should aim for to be able to forage pretty much anything required of a bounty task? I know there are a lot of factors, such as stat bonuses, free handedness, profession, level, et cetera, but figuring I only really care about being able to do bounty tasks, where should I stop training this?

Edited for clarity.

what is your profession?

Paladin.

By guild task I mean adventurer's guild task. Bounty stuff. I wasn't really clear on that.

I find that 1x in survival will help you find anything very easily when foraging. On top of that you don't have to worry about slipping on ice nearly as much after a certain amount of survival ranks.

You're a ranger though. You undoubtedly get a foraging bonus, and I'd rather not tie up TPs by 1xing survival for life. It's 1/1 for you isn't it?

I was hoping I could get to maybe 30 or 40 ranks of survival/perception and then use the TPs elsewhere.

That is helpful though. I might end up going for just survival instead of both survival and perception.

Rangers don't get a foraging bonus, they have a spell that gives them foraging ranks I believe. Either way it's not an inherent ability, they have to cast the spell.

Ah, okay. Well, at any rate, short of 1xing survival for life, is there an estimate on how many ranks is pretty decent for being able to complete most bounties?

Rangers sure as hell do get a foraging bonus

I remember reading somewhere that rangers have the lowest threshold of any profession in terms of the roll required for a successful attempt at foraging.

I don't know if this is right or not, but I thought how many ranks you "needed" depended on what level you are and/or where you're trying to find the bounties.

For example, a 5th level character will have an easier time finding stuff in kobolds with 2 or 3 ranks of survival (if any) versus a 75th level character trying to find stuff somewhere (Rift?) with less than 1x Survival.

Then again, I could be just bullshitting this all and skewing what I heard a long-ass time ago. *shrug*

No that information is correct. I was just hoping that there was some sort of generic "get to x amount of ranks" and you should be okay for most things. It seems there isn't though so I'll just fiddle around with it until I get the number right.

Thanks much all for your input.

If it helps any - I tried singling a wizard in survival to aid in foraging bounties, and at about 20th level he has a very difficult time finding most of the herbs/plants that he is asked to retrieve. Even the "easy" ones seem to require three-digit open rolls.

That is a big help. Thanks.

My Cleric is 1x Survival and 1x Perception at level 87. When kneeling and with open hands, I need about a 30 roll to find the easiest herbs (the herbs that give 100 bounty points like flowers). The hardest herbs I am assigned a task for (800+ bounty points) I need a roll of about 65ish to find.

Perfect. Thank you. That's exactly what I was lookin' for. Looks like I'll need to stick fairly close to a 1x plan to be able to get everything without trouble.

In case anyone was curious, I've been doing a bit of fiddling with my skill ranks over the last few days to figure out what best works.

It seems that there's a base roll needed based on profession or race or stats that can't be lowered by ranks as best I can tell.

With 15 ranks of Perception/Survival, it takes a minimum roll of 90 for me to forage for a particular herb, and it still takes a minimum roll of 90 with 30 ranks of each.

The minimum roll I've ever gotten any herb with is an 80, regardless of ranks.

It seems that the ranks will allow you to forage for tougher herbs, but in the end won't make them much easier to forage. From what I'm seeing anyway, that is.

Once I'm higher level I'll see if I can find some sort of cap for it by trial and error to see if there's an amount of ranks I can get to in order to be able to just stop training it, and still be able to forage everything necessary for bounty tasks.
