I generally dont like to blame officiating because it goes both ways... but the calls tonight were just terrible. Rays batter swings past the point of no return and ends up with a walk, Rollins gets hit by a pitch and its ignored and I dont know where the strike zone was tonight, apparently neither did the ump.

Phillies can't blame the ump because they just didn't deserve to win when their hitting with RISP is that bad, but Jesus Christ how terrible was the umpire?

Anebriated
10-24-2008, 12:23 AM
Yeah im not saying we deserved to win, but the calls certainly played a factor in the loss. Myers really didnt pitch a terrible game but it wasnt his best showing. All in all the Phils did what they needed to do and won one of the two games in Tampa before returning to Philly for the home games. I still like our chances.

I was watching something else, and then was like, "Oh, the WS is on. I wonder who's winning?" My roommate was immediately like, "Shields is pitching tonight, I guarantee TB is winning." That guy's sick.

Sure enough, they were up 4-0 when we turned it on.

Anebriated
10-24-2008, 12:13 PM
You are entitled to your opinion. Rays were the best home team in baseball, and Shields was an excellent pitcher at home during the season. Now the Rays have to come into a hostile Philly atmosphere and play 3 games. A place where the fans actually know what baseball is. The Rays are used to playing in the warm Florida weather and now they get to come to our cold autumn nights. On top of all that the Rays have to be worried. We have left historic amounts of RISP but should that change(phils were around .300 during the regular season w/ RISP) the games are completely different. I know its what actually happens that counts but you cant tell me the Rays dont know that we've been coming close only to have them get out of the jam.

IMHO, while the ratings might suck, this is one of the best matchups for a world series in a long time.

Shields wasn't anything special, they hit him fine until they got RISP and came up small.

The main things I am taking out of the first two games is the fact that the offense that put up 30+ runs against the Red Sox through 7 has only put up 6 through the first 2. Also the Phillies have left plenty stranded, meaning they are getting on base just having trouble punching the runners home. Only a matter of time before the bats get hot.

I understand the home loyalty but how are we fucked? Hamels is better than anyone you have and Myers pitched just as well as Shields. Garza is better than Moyer, I'll give you that.

Oh and Sean as a Rays fan I have a question about Upton... Did he loaf all year like he has in the World Series? He doesn't run out double play balls and was jogging like a bum on the play that ended up being an error by Werth. He's lucky he even made it into 2nd.

Maddon was on his case earlier this season for playing like a raging vagina. From what I see, it had no effect on his performance.

Did PSU win? I didn't catch the game. Also I'd just like to note that I don't hate all the Philly teams. Just the Eagles and the Phillies. Flyers have always been my team of choice, even after the Devils showed up. I can't stand the Devils for some reason. Never could. Probably because I was already a die hard Flyer's fan. Lindros used to be the MAN. I don't really have a good excuse for not liking the Eagles. They just never sat right with me after I started watching Football. I'm a Steelers fan for sure, but I have no allegiance to the Eagles whatsoever.

The Rays had a hell of a year and have shown that they are no longer the perennial bottom feeders of MLB, however the Phillies are a team that too many people underestimate and it showed. In all honesty if people were so bent up on hating Philly they would have seen that this team was solid all the way through and has been for the past 3 years. Now that their bullpen is in better shape(aka no Mesa and Alfonseco) they are a great team. Walked down broad st from the stadium and made it to city hall, then realized we were way to drunk and tired so we hopped the subway back down to the stadiums and continued our drinking there.

The only downside to the mayhem was my girlfriend took a nasty spill and I ended up having to go get her and take her to the hospital. Took her back to her car this evening and found that her windows were smashed in. I get being rowdy and reckless but people need to leave students property alone(car was in a Temple U parking lot).

Hell of a day and definitely something I will remember for a long time.

I drank from 8:30 in the morning when I got on the train until 2 AM. I feel terrible today.

So that would make our organization better by your definition?

Well played.

post script ... I dig philly cheese steaks.

I dont think its any secret that aside from a few bright seasons the Phillies havent exactly been an impressive franchise. They have been around for a long time and now have 2 world champion titles under their belts. Would I say the Rays are better? no, theyve yet to win but they came close.

My whole point was going into the postseason none of the talking heads of sports expected the Phillies to win. The only excitement for the team was out of Philly. As each round progressed we were still expected to lose only to prove people wrong. When we got to the world series the Rays were favored. I can only think of one or two "experts" who picked the Phillies to win at all, and that was in 7 games. Part of this was due to Vegas giving the Rays good odds in hopes people would bet the Phillies to even out the money that Vegas would have lost if the Rays won(250:1 preseason favorites). People saw the Rays at good odds and immediately saw them as the better team and overlooked what the Phillies brought to the table. If you watched the Rays celebration after they beat the Red Sox they looked like they had just won the world series. They pretty much ended their season after that game.

btw, the parade was nuts. Tons of people, lots of excitement, great energy in the city. I was lucky enough to snag tickets in the linc so I got to see the players walk around and then watched the speeches on the big screen. Good times.

Well I'm looking forward to next year for sure considering we got that far with many of our studs out for months at a time.

That parade looked insane... 2,000,000 people? fuck
