250cc.. pretty damn fun, it's like a motorcycle for retards.

I qualify.

went from paying $40 per tank of gas to $4.

Went from $700/6 months for car insurance to $180.

And I look gay to boot while I ride it!

That reminds me of a joke:

What's a moped and a fat girl have in common?

They are both fun to ride until your friends catch you.

250cc... nice size engine for a moped.

And why the fuck is your cycle insurance so high? $180 for 6 months... is it a 2008/2009 model or something?

I have a lot more than the basic coverage.

Yea, on my motorcycle, the basic insurance is cheap as hell, but if you get the theft insurance and all that it goes up pretty fast.

lol.

Mopeds. How ever so nerdy. I crack up when I see them in the parking lot at my college. Along with the wearing of a backpack and totally standing up straight..oh man. Haha.

Do you mean a moped or a scooter?

Kuyuk
10-18-2008, 07:15 PM
Is there really a difference? but it's a scooter...

yeah there's a difference.

Mopeds have pedals.

It is common to see a family of four on a scooter in Korea.

Get one of those shirts that says on the back "If you can read this, the bitch fell off".

Except, you'll be riding a moped, so maybe "If you can read this my life partner lost his grip of my penis and now all I can say to people is that it's not big but it goes off quick."

Hey, if I could get away with riding a scooter I totally would. When my job was closer to home I rode my bike to work. Now it's across the bay... I could still ride my bike but I'm slow as hell and I'm too lazy to ride 20-30 miles to work and back.

I'm starting to hate these things. Sure, they get 100 miles per gallon, but so what? They only have a 1 gallon tank to begin with.

Also, the law here states that any motorized vehicle/moped/scooter/etc. that is over 50 CCs must be registered, insured, with plates on it, and only operated by a licensed individual.

So what the fuck does that REALLY mean? It means every store has or is churning out 49.5CC mopeds, and none of these rules apply to those. Then I get to run into (Not literally, but I wish) all the little punks with their bandanas or hoodies, and their "THUG 4 LIFE" leather jackets zipping around doing their drug deals on these stupid things. And hey, no need for a license or insurance or registration or anything, so they can just hit the breakdown lane and drive along at their 20 MPH and nobody can do anything about it.

See if SIMU will endorse you to ride it around with a custom GemStone IV paintjob.

Eh, I don't really have too much of an issue with the 49.5CC people floating around. The only thing I can really say is that they should limit the roads these vehicles are allowed on. Here in Florida you see these things tooling down major highways at their max speed of around 45 MPH and they can really be a danger.

On the positive side though, with our dependence on oil in a waning economic situation, these vehicles can really be a way to save a lot of money for those people skimming underneath the middle class line. Outside of major cities, public transit on the whole is an absolute joke. A small scooter saves you a large amount of money in insurance, in licensing and registry costs, and allows you a means to get to a job when you need to without having to rely on unreliable public transit.

As far as the insurance goes for others with these things on the road: I haven't seen anyone on these things cause too much damage to other drivers. Even when they hit you, the things are small and just don't go that fast. It's sort of like hitting a deer. Yeah, it can do some damage, but not nearly as much as another car. The alternative for people riding these things is for them to pick up a junker car and run it around without insurance because it's just too expensive for them to afford (Not saying this is the case for all of these people, but the people vehicles like this are good for). In the area I'm in right now, you will not be hired under any circumstance if you are relying on the bus. No one trusts it, and rightly so. If you say "yeah I've got a scooter", well that's reliable transportation in this area. Much more reliable than the bus, anyhow.

But to re-iterate, they really need to put restrictions on what types of road these things can be on. Route 19 in Florida is one of the most dangerous highways in the US, and the Gunn Highway in Tampa I think IS the most dangerous statistically. There are scooters running down these roads, and in my opinion, that's just reckless.

I dont have a 49.5cc engine, I have a 250cc...

I still dont take it on the major highways around atlanta, I'd get creamed. I havent maxed out the top speed yet, nor do I plan to, I've had it to 70ish, and that was fast enough..

Yeah, the 250s aren't nearly as bad as the 49s. They're every bit as highway capable as a motorcycle. Moreso in some cases. I considered picking one up not too long ago to save on gas in decent weather.

I bet it won't be long before that situation is legislatively remedied.

In any event, mopeds/motorcycles are great for gas mileage, but try owning one in a state that regularly registers temps of below zero for 8 months out of the year.

Haha, yeah that'd be trouble. They had the situation pretty well rectified in Maine though. They had snowmobiles instead of scooters, and they don't require them to be registered or insured up there either. I was absolutely dumbfounded the first time I saw three snowmobiles ridden by kids with backpacks go whizzing by my house at 6 in the morning. It was explained later to me that instead of putting chains on cars or waiting for a schoolbus that wasn't going to come, people would regularly use snowmobiles to get around to where they needed to go. This was in a very, very backwoods area though, of course.

Nice. In Minnesota, I've even seen people retrofit their snowmobiles with wheels so they can keep riding in the summer. Pretty funny sight, snowmobiles cruising down the road in the middle of june.

Yeah it's a riot. Some of those things can fuckin' FLY too. I haven't seen the wheel thing personally but I've seen Mainers usin' em with the treads in the middle of summer.
