View Full Version : Best Free FTP?

I've just changed computers, and none too soon. My old laptop has died completely and I can't recover anything from it. I need a new FTP client to manage my website, but I'm really not in a mood to pay for one.

So, which free FTP client is the best, in your opinion?

Pirated CuteFTP.

Agreed. That's the best one.

We allowed to link torrents here? I haven't read the rulebook in years.

Unfortunately, my apartment complex has blocked the port to download torrents from, so that's out of the question.

If you aren't familiar with how torrents work, here's a step by step:

1. download bittornado. http://www.bittornado.com
2. Install. It'll be quick
3. (Optional) restart computer
4. Go to the top website. Click download torrent. If you restarted your computer, it'll automatically open with Bittornado. If you didn't restart your computer, it will be confused. Choose to pick a program to open it with, then browse. Find the bittornado directory and select the program.
5. Select a place to put the files you're about to download.
6. It'll start downloading. In the top right it'll have a colored light. Black means it hasn't connected. Red means it connected to the tracker but nobody is sharing files with you yet. Yellow means it's going, but there's some sort of hindrance, be it a firewall, or closed ports. It'll still go, just slower than usual. Green means everything's good.
7. In the bottom left set your connection speed. I prefer to use DSL/Cable Fast. Just right of that are your share preferences. Set 'em all the way to the left if you've got a slow-ish connection. Torrents work on a give and take system sort of. You upload file fragments as you're downloading. The idea is, the more you upload the better downloads you'll get. Doesn't always work that way, but I digress.
8. Once the progress bar turns bright green, click finished. This particular torrent is a small file, and an application. It's got lots of seeders (people uploading) and few leechers (people downloading), so it's only going to take a minute or two. From there just read the instructions given with the files (usually in a readme or .nfo file. Open an .nfo with wordpad or notepad. Don't let Windows just try to open it.)

If you have any problems lemme know.

Oh. No worries then. It's a small file. You got AIM? I'll download it real fast and shoot it over to you.

Edit to add: aaand nevermind I'm dumb. Didn't see the little AIM button on all the posts. I'll IM you in a sec.

Edit again to add: I changed my mind again! Log on AIM and I'll send the file over to ya.

The only problem there is no fucking way to block "the port to download torrents from" because there is no such port. You have like 65,000 ports to choose from.

Then please explain to me why the paperwork I got when I moved in said as much, and then walk me through port forwarding on a Belkin router so I don't have to deal with it.

FileZilla is the best client I've used, and I've used Cute FTP.

It's also free.

I always used Cute at my old job and we had some heavy use. Digital recordings by the thousands up and down to Israel and France.

http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Choose your router from there and it'll give you step by step instructions.

Bob's right though. There's a large range of ports that can be used for torrents. Most torrent clients will let you set which it uses as well. Your complex probably just told you that they blocked it because they don't want you to do it. I don't see them being able to block the whole range though without completely screwing over everybody's internet.

While there is no way to block a Bittorrent port, what a lot of buildings do, as well as college campuses, is identify Bittorrent activity and reduce the bandwidth on Bittorrent traffic to the point where it's unfeasible to download anything using it.

To get around this, you can enable encryption in your Bittorrent client.
