View Full Version : I pwned my carpet

I wasn't paying attention last night and spilled a whole tall glass of red crystal light all over my beige carpet. I scrubbed it with woolite and got out what I can, here's the pic from when I got home tonight:

So I found these instructions online to get out the stain:

http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf668636.tip.html

My son spilled pink tropical punch kool-aid all over the carpet. I tried woolite, resolve, kids-n-pets ( an enzyme cleaner that professionals use) nothing worked and I started freaking out. I did not want to replace the carpet. So I tried the iron method. It came right up. 1/2 tsp of dawn, 4 cups water, white cloth and iron. Pour some of the solution over the stain and place the cloth and then the iron and the stain comes up in minutes. I can't believe how much money I wasted on carpet cleaners. This is amazing.

So I tried for about a half hour so far, I'm at this:

I'm not as confident as the other people seem to be, but it is a little better. I'll try more later. It's just bizarre ironing a carpet.

Someone please let me know if you know something better.

Was anyone else expecting a story that involving an alcohol-induced accident?

If you look on Google for "grape juice carpet stain", there are a ton of links to cleaning those up. I didn't read any of those links, but in my professional opinion you should pour grape juice on the stain and then look on google.

Yes. Although I thought it was going to be puke caused by drinking, not the alcohol itself. I dunno why.

I haven't puked from drinking in like... 4.5 years, thank goodness. I was on the side of the Long Island Expressway at like 3 or 4am too. And no, I wasn't the one driving.

A variation of the iron method worked wonders when I spilled candle wax on my carpet. Other than that, I have nothing more to add other than good luck with that and try some oxyclean or something.

Here's how to fix it....

You will need... aprox. 5 to 10 gallons of red crystal light..
some sort of method to evenly distribute it
TADA new carpet color
it's just like hair dye right?

That actually sounds like a pretty neat idea to me, though only if the carpet started as white. You could probably manage a neat marbled effect if you do it the right way. Ohwells.

For the record, I haven't puked from drinking in nearly twenty one years! :D

i thought oxy clean was basically hydrogen peroxide

Ah... I was close.

The ingredients listed on the OxyClean container are: Sodium Percarbonate and Sodium Carbonate. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate - I don't know what is in Arm & Hammer's Washing Soda.

Environmentally friendly, sodium percarbonate will react with water to form hydrogen peroxide, which acts as both cleaner and slightly acidic bleach/brightener. A great benefit is that the hydrogen peroxide will evaporate and leave behind no pockets of acidic solids.

I used Oxy Clean when I had to clean up a really big puddle of blood out of my carpet.

Your biggest problem with using Oxy-Clean is going to be the fact that the area you clean is going to be cleaner than the rest of the room. Gotta master the "feather effect".

I recommend either the peroxide, or vinegar/baking soda. Apply it, let it sit, then sponge it up, apply water, sponge up the water and repeat until the stain is out.

I mostly use the baking soda/vinegar, and basically douse the area with some baking soda and then pour on the vinegar, then sponge it up, put down water, sponge it up.. then I let it dry and vacuum the area to get out any residual baking soda.

Screw the oxy-clean, you need to call Billy Mays himself. Or if he's not available Chuck Norris can kick the stain's ass out of your carpet...so I heard.

This is actually what I was going to suggest Narcissiia knows what she's talking about this, baking soda/vinegar is the thing you want to use.

Screw any of that retail junk. Go find yourself an Aaron's and rent an industrial strength carpet shampooer, or if you have a Kirby vaccuum get one of the shampoo attachments and go to town on that thing with a small amount of bleach mixed with water and shampoo. It'll come right out and won't discolor the rug.

Or like Narcissiia says, do the baking soda and vinegar thing. I used that to get dog pee out of a rug so it wouldn't smell and the dog wouldn't continue to pee there (It's not my dog. My dogs get trained.). The house smelled like a salad for a few days, but it was way preferable to urine.

Just remember to blot the stain out, not rub it. Blotting it (osmosis) pulls the stain and liquid out of the carpet and into the towel you're using as a blotter. Rubbing it just forces it into the carpet fibers.

And never use hot water to try and get a stain out. It just causes the fibers to absorb the stain - making it very difficult to get out.

Man, I don't know why people hire him to do pitches; his voice and demeanor are so annoying I immediately mute the TV or change the channel when he comes on. Him and that Sham Wow guy.

It would help if the commerecials weren't twice as loud as the programs too.

He was the actual inventor of most of that shit until he sold the rights. Part of the contract was for him to remain the front man.

He drives a Rolls btw so no matter what I guess he made the right decision.

My husbands aunt swears that you can rub out juice/kool-aid/crystal light stains from carpets using those MrClean white eraser sponges. I've never tried it, but can't hurt can it?
