View Full Version : The oldest thing you own.

I've never been accused of being overly sentimental, and as such I haven't retained a whole lot of stuff from my childhood. However, I was cleaning my mother's garage the other day and I came across the oldest thing I own: A souvenir copy of the Declaration of Independence I got from the Franklin Institute on a field trip in 2nd grade.
What's the oldest thing you still have in your possession? Antiques like your great great grandmother's sewing machine don't count unless they were given to you when you were younger and you don't have anything still that you had before that.

I still wear my dad's old self-winding Seiko watch. 31 years old and still ticking, he gave it to me when I was 7.

I've got my grandfather's tie clips, money clips, pocket watch and cuff links.
I still have the blanket that my parents brought home from the hospital in. One of my great-aunts knit it, and it's still in really good condition.

I have a kings silver jubilee edition of the daily mirror from 1935.
It's pretty interesting to see photos of Hitler in the way they were reported then. If only they knew...

I've got the Life magazine from the Kennedy assassination and a Look magazine about Nixon.
It's really funny to thumb through it. Every other page is a whiskey/scotch/bourbon or a cigarette ad. Oh they do mix it up with a Chevy, Ford or Chrysler ad.

Now I want to make it clear that I don't want to start another "No YOUR mother is fatter" argument with you, but you bring up an interesting point. I really don't think Hitler should be painted in any worse light than a lot of other politicians, some of your own and some of our own included. At the extreme bad end of the spectrum of course, but it was inevitable that a regime like his would rise to power after the way we decided to handle Germany post World War I, basically taking everything they had and turning them into a third world country. Of course the term third world country didn't exist back then, but the general idea is the same. I think he was a political genius, and yes, a bit mad, and he definitely erred on the side of evil, but that rings true for a lot of the powers in World War II itself.

Of my own stuff, my mom saved all my baby teeth and a lock of hair from my first haircut and returned them to me a couple of years ago.
Of stuff that was given to me, I have a travel trunk that belonged to my great aunt and is probably from the 1930's. I have a couple of other things that I'm not sure how old they actually are.

The oldest thing that was personally mine is a stuffed dog I had when I was a few years old. I remember carrying that thing around forever and listening to it play music. So I'd say it's about 25 years give or take one or two. Oh, yeah his name is Jack! :)
When my grandmother died last year all of my family went through her place to decide what they wanted. At the end of it all there was this curio type deal no one wanted/could bring back home filled with various pieces of glass. IE: bowls and plates, nothing special but I could remember her having that stuff when we first moved to Montana when I was 7. It was depressing to think that that was all her stuff and no one wanted it so my mom okay'd me taking a lot of it out and I have it set up in my place now. I don't know how old it is or if it's even special but she was a relatively cold and very private woman. She'd collected this for a reason and I didn't want pieces of her life to end up in the dump.

Petrified wood given to me by Raptor Jesus, our Lord and prehistoric savior.
Also, since I think I will never meet anyone here, my baby shoes: Please forgive the ghey; my mom would stab and shoot me if I threw them away, she's made that pretty clear with her Jew-hoarding instinct combined with a fiery Argentine wannabe-a-Spaniard inferiority complex. Argh.
I'm not too overly sentimental myself so... I dunno if it counts. My grandmother saved almost everything from my babyhood, short of my dirty diapers. No! Wait! She has one of my old diaper cloths (my mother used cloth diapers) still, although it's clean. Along with my rattle, my crib blankets that she crocheted herself, my favorite teething ring, my baby shoes, et cetera.
These things are all still in her possession and likely to stay there. If she tries to give them to me, I will throw 'em out or give them away to all the chicks I know giving birth lately. My place is crowded with action figures as it is, I don't need more useless stuff.
Of the things that are actually physically with me, I think the oldest is a stuffed toy dog named Pepe. If I didn't sleep with my boyfriend, I think I'd still be sleeping with Pepe at twenty-seven.

I have a lot of stuff that was handed down to me.. I have a music box collection that I inherited from my mother and she got a lot of them when she was a little girl.
I think the thing I'm most attached to though my teddy bear Matt, who I got when I got pwned by a car as a toddler. He's still in really good condition, too!

My dad got me a stuffed Sylvester when I was probably 3. He's ragged as fuck but still without holes (my mom may have sewn him up a few times though) and his one plastic button eye was bitten off by a dog of mine (that I ended up giving away due to my devastating damage to my toy, not to mention he tried to attack anyone coming through our front door, but anyway...) And as Dex mentioned, if I wasn't married I'd been sleeping with him still at 27 years old. :D
The oldest thing given to me is likely a pump-foot sewing machine we got when Scott's Mom died. Its all wood with cast iron legs and foot pedal. The whole thing turns upside down and hides in the desk-like design making it a table-top for our hallway. I wish I knew how old it was.
Oh, I forgot...I also have a 1917 Kohler cast iron claw foot bathtub and matching sink that Scott's grandmother gave us from her house when it was first built. Notice a trend? He comes from a family of packrats and they ALL save EVERYTHING. Unfortunately for him, I'm not that sentimental so I pretty much avoid my attic, where every single thing Scott has ever touched in his lifetime is up there. :)

I'm typing it up actually. The writing is really arcane cursive and the text hasn't held up very well (it was written on cheap paper) I can't read every other word, my mom is pretty good at it, we've been working at it on and off for a few years now when we can get together but it's been slow going.
I'll try to find what I've typed so far, it's mostly a lot of foul language and talking about whores.

I have a stuffed bear that my grandmother made me when I was 1 year old, I sleep with it to this day.
Occasionally, I have dreams that I carry it around and am embarassed at the looks I get.
The thing is only like 30% covered in fur. Under it's little tail has the only semi-prestine fur left on it. My sister got one too, but she was 7 when she got hers so it didn't click as much as it did with me. I own that one now too.
I've thought about switching the stuffing between the two and sleeping with the fuzzy one since the only reason it doesn't feel right is because the cotton isn't squashed into a hard lump.
Other than that, I have a level owned by my grandfather (Who died 15 years before I was born). I'm not sure if it's 100% level anymore, but I use it just the same. I'd rather everything in my house be somewhat crooked and use my grandfather's level than get everything perfect without it.
Hmm, my stuffed dog is still in relatively good shape. He could probably be restuffed but he has all his eyes and fur. He got occasional holes because, hell, I rarely spent a night without him from when I got him to age twenty. Even when I traveled, he went with me. XD Foreign country, camping in the desert, whatever. Pepe was there.
My boyfriend lets me sleep with Pepe occasionally, when I'm sick or really really really stressed out/depressed.

Oh Sean of The my life is fucked up, your retort wounded me. I would not think anyone with half a brain cell would take anything you say seriously. Look at your life, you can't accomplish much of anything except make some stupid ass insults on a message board.
How long have you been making stupid comments to me? 3 plus years? LOL LOL this coming from some waste of skin who lets a cripple who pissed in his car suck his dick, can't keep a family together and drinks himself into such a stupor he can't find his bottle? Oh lets not forget some childish posts on how your going to shave your fat passed out buddies head LOL.
Meanwhile you have nothing better to do then to make lame mullet remarks to me? I find that hysterical quite honestly and something I would see coming from a teen in HS, not a grown man <I use the term grown quite loosely>
My only advice is try fixing your fucked up life with the same fervor you show in posting stupid shit and your black cloud of shit might go away.

Sean, or anyone, if you're interested, I still have a copy of part of Lord Cornwallis' diary that my parents found when they were renovating my childhood home in Lawrenceville. If you're familiar with the area, Lawrenceville used to be Queenstown, and my old house was a temporary headquarters for the Revolutionary army during the war. It came complete with hidden slave cubicles in the attic and a tunnel under the road to the church across the street from the basement.
Also ghosts. No joke.

Sweet. Sounds like my old house in upstate NY complete with trap door slave cubicles and Lincoln used it for a couple of weeks as a HQ.
You win for having a tunnel however.

It's pages from his original diary. I'll ask my mother tomorrow where she has it kept.
Also, they didn't actually know they had a tunnel until they'd lived there for about 8 years (About a year before I was born I think it was). Some guy knocked on the door and asked if he could take a pickaxe into the basement because he thought there was a tunnel there. Turns out there was. The house itself is absolutely huge. 3 stories, plus basement obviously. It was big enough that they rented out seven rooms in the place constantly. That house was like a hotel. Used to be called the Queenstown Tavern.

I've a few things that are rather old...
1) Japanese Sword Blade. by the makers mark it is aprox 220 years old
2) a collection of decorative Japanese Arrow Heads. Various, I think the oldest one is about 160 years old
3) a very small collection of coins. One of which is a silver coin that is about 400 years old.
4) a decent collection of tribal/demon/ghost/etc masks. Oldest of which is an African ghost mask that is about 80 years old.
5) a partial suit of European plate armor. aprox 300 years old.
6) an antique gold star of David necklace that's been around forever, and I wear, I'm not sure how old it actually is. Pre WWII though.
7) what’s left of a Viking sword. in bad enough shape that if it wasn't mounted in a display box it would look like little more then a lump of rust. Its old but I'm not sure it if its authentic. Looks cool as hell on my wall though.
8) a small collection of magatama and other talismans. there carved rocks, so there really really old. just not sure on how long they've been magatama, etc. :)

Oldest thing that I'm sure of the date on is a set of Homer Laughlin china from 1929.
