At 8:24pm my son was born! He was 7lbs 6oz and 19" long. He's beautiful. Unfortunately I don't have any decent photos to post due to the fact that he was placed in NICU due to breathing problems.

They claim he has pneumonia due to the group strep B I was carrying but because I was given 6 bags of antibiotics through IV he's healing up nicely but they still want to monitor him. Supposedly he can come home Tuesday or Wednesday but nobody can give an exact date since they claim they're "waiting on test results". Its making us crazy.

Either way, he is much improved, drinking breastmilk (which I have to pump, and it sucks, since he's still at the hospital and I'm obviously discharged.) As soon as I can bring him home I'll throw up some pictures.

I am so tore up its ridiculous. Anyone who doesn't get an epidural is A. very brave, and B. fucking crazy. I experienced about 10 REAL contractions after they broke my water and was wailing for the epidural the whole time. Wow unneeded pain. They also gave an episiotomy. I am cut the fuck up. :( But its healing, among some other really unsavory things that get worse with pushing during labor....but seeing Riley in the hospital makes me realize its all worth it.

I can't wait til he comes home and I can really start being a mom. Scott is so excited and has done such a 180 its beyond words. You know its love when your husband helps change your diaper and spray numbing meds on your swollen downstairs. :D

WOOOHOOOO GRATS MOM!!!

edit: Oh and i'm glad he's doing better.

double edit: I can't imagine how crazy it's driving you, but it's worth the wait to make sure he comes home completely healthy.

triple edit:
Anyone who doesn't get an epidural is A. very brave, and B. fucking crazy.

My mom had natural childbirth, she was fucking psycho. Probably why she only had one kid, lol.

(I really should have read the post before replying, obviously, but I was too excited and had to congrats?!?!?!)

My mom had natural childbirth, she was fucking psycho. Probably why she only had one kid, lol

My mom did too, in part because she was so traumatized by having my brother via c-section and then she had to have an appendectomy under local anesthesia out of fear of losing me. She was dead set on a "natural birth".

Also probably why in my baby book it says "mom's first words after the birth: WHAT DID I GIVE BIRTH TO, A FUCKING ALIEN?"

Congratulations! Babies are fun! Unfortunately you are the mother, which makes them less fun since you have to clean up when they make messes which may or may not have been egged on by nefarious uncles. In conclusion, hide anything that will leave a stain on something if you have any siblings who are remotely like me.

My nephew visited Florida about a week after the NFL season started. He went back up to Maine and now only says ONE thing. "Patriots suck. Tom Brady's dead. Patriot's suck. Tom Brady's dead.". Like a parrot! Imagine that! A little land mammal!

I can just imagine him getting his 4 year old ass beat in some redneck bar now. It brings tears of joy to my eyes.

Really though, congratulations! Babies are really awesome and I'm happy he's healthy...Seriously though. Keep him away from any uncles.

Congrats. My friend's girl just went in for a planned delivery about a week ago because she was a week overdue, and they don't let them potential taxpayers fuck around in the womb long past due. They need to come out NOW!

Of course, then his phone gets shut off the next day (poor bloke. they bought the house on 2 incomes, but she's been lounging around for 2+ years now), and he's like 50 minutes away from me, so I plan to pop in unexpected sometime soon since I can't reach him anymore.

New kids are awesome. Also, watching the biggest billy mcbadass I know go from 'fuck ya'll bitches' to 'man, I gotta start slowin down for this kid' was really interesting.

LoL yeah. I always wondered why people would record childbirth, unless it was done as a deterrent for their daughters to have unprotected sex.

Then again I'm a single guy so I have a different view on the matter than most couples.

Shari

Haha, let me answer everyone's questions. First, thank you all so much. Riley is actually an Irish name we found out, which is great because we both are a bit of it, not to mention our last name is Doyle.

Second, yes he is getting snipped. He was, however, the first uncircumsized penis I've seen, how sad is that?

Third, my boobs. Holy sweet fucking Jesus its retarded. They're like rocks right now and painful. I'm pumping like a motherfucker to try and make them less hard but no dice. I'm not sure if that's normal so someone clue me in if you can.

Fourth, fuck no I didn't video record that shit. Who the fuck wants to see THAT!? My mom took a pic as they laid him on my chest...from far AWAY and I was like, "You are deleting that now, I hope."

I have pictures!

Unfortunately for the little guy, I have a thing for hats. :(

But they're so cute! They have knots! He looks like an alien! Or...a baby with antennas.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/PetiteDollie/alienhat.jpg

And of course, had to get an ASU hat. (Nevermind their football team is getting raped this season. ::crie::)

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/PetiteDollie/asubaby.jpg

Oh and good news, he's doing excellent and they took him off all the wires and IVs and are currently treating him like a normal baby. The staff is now saying he'll come home Thursday instead of Tuesday, which sucks, but better safe than sorry.

He's perfect! Congrats. And indeed making my ovaries hurt!

On the boob thing..when your milk first comes in it's total horror for a few days. I used to stand in the shower that seemed to help, and as weird as it sounds..cabbage leaves raw ones..just laid over them, will help. As you pump like crazy..your telling your body it needs to make more milk. Once Riley is home and your body starts meeting his needs, the swelling will go down, and you'll feel much better. No knots...it's a bad deal at first. If I can help anymore with that pm me? I breastfed all four of mine, and there are things one should know that no one tells you until like way after you've had to deal with pain, and discomfort.

Again, yay! He's adorable.

ps. be glad for the episiotomy, WAYY better than tearing in all sorts of directions.

Third, my boobs. Holy sweet fucking Jesus its retarded. They're like rocks right now and painful. I'm pumping like a motherfucker to try and make them less hard but no dice. I'm not sure if that's normal so someone clue me in if you can.

Engorgement can be really f'ing painful (not from personal experience, mind -- this is from my wife.) She had the opposite issue (low supply), but I know from pre-baby research a few things you can do:

- Bags of frozen peas on the boobs
- Cabbage leaves in your bra
- Limit your hot showers, since that actually stimulates more milk production
- Pumping actually stimulates MORE production of milk, too, so you may want to ease up on that. I know it probably seems like you MUST, but you're just gonna make it worse.

Check out this site:
http://kellymom.com/

Specifically:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/engorgement.html

...so, yeah. I feel a bit weird now. But congrats, again!

EDIT: Wow, someone else posted a lot of the same advice. I don't feel as weird now.

Shari
10-11-2008, 11:13 PM
I appreciate the info. However, I DO need to stimulate them to make more milk. Right now I'm making just enough every pump session for one feeding. I need to make sure I can produce enough when he gets bigger to compensate.

I just look at them in the mirror and think, "Damn, I'm gonna get a half gal from these puppies!"

Then I pour it from the collection chamber into the metered hospital-approved feeding bottles and get...30ccs. Its frustrating at the moment. I spoke with my mother and she says it will increase, and had the same problem, and that woman has fucking cantelopes even after breastfeeding 3 kids.

OMG Shari!!! Congrats!!! He's sooooo adorable! :hugs: Babies are the best aren't they?!

As far as pumping...what type of pump do you have? Are you just manually pumping? I use the Medela Pump In Style Advanced double pump and that thing is a Godsend. It's the best pump evar!!!

I definitely can relate to the boobs being hard as rocks at first. Your boobs will go down and the supply will go up. Make sure you invest in a good bra to hold those suckers in, even at night. It will help.

Also, nursing pads are your friend. I like the Medela and the Lansinoh ones. They will help soak up any leakage you get because you don't want to have a milky wet shirt. And also you want to get some Lansinoh lanolin cream. Use it after each nursing/pumping to help with soreness.

The kellymom.com website is a valuable resource.

Oh! And another great site to check out too is Cafemom.com. It's like myspace for mommies. I highly recommend joining!

If you have any other questions you can always toss me an IM at Fenix825. I know I could have used some of that advice when I was first home!

Be glad the dr did the cutting.

My son was 9 lb 12 oz and was stuck, they were like lets push him back in and do a c-section and I grabbed the Dr. and told him FUCK NO get him out NOW.

They didn't have time for drugs and besides my incisions he tore me in two more spots.

They kept bringing in med students to look at me down there. I felt like a drive through or something.

And yeah the boobs will get better, the first few nights were horrid and I couldnt sleep because of leaking all over.

If I want to hang shit over his head I can pull the..."You were in NICU for a week and a half" card...or the "some nurse mistakenly fed you someone else's breastmilk, making me a fucking wreck" card.

*On the breastmilk - Mother came back clean but guess how NICE the hospital was after THAT, gee, wonder why that was...

You're kidding about Riley getting fed someone else's milk, right?? How in the hell did that happen?

And I'm totally with Shari regarding the epidural. I'm not sure how long they made her wait, but I was well close to screaming murder by the time I got mine. And there is more than pain that a mother can hang over a child's head...like scars, stretch marks, and, if all else fails, the many, many sleepless nights.

Nope. We were in the NICU holding him. Nurse comes over and hands us a vial of breastmilk (we all put them in the same kind of bottles after they pump, and we are given barcoded labels to stick on them with our name, baby's dob, etc).

The milk was sitting in a styrofoam coffee cup of hot water to warm it up. Scott picks it up and starts feeding him. I nap in the rocker. When he's done he sets it on the table next to us and starts to burp him. I happen to glance at the bottle and notice the date that's written on it - in someone else's handwriting.

I pick it up, show it to Scott and he gawks at me and first thing he says is, "Don't freak out." So tears are streaming down my face as we tell the nurse what she did, and proceed to go downstairs to the cafeteria to get breakfast to collect ourselves before we figure out what to do next.

All I could think of was, "My baby has HIV. My baby has Hepatitis. My baby has some sort of incurable life-threatening disease that will need to be treated the rest of his life."

So this head nurse chases us down and begs us to hang out until the head clinical supervisor and neonatal practitioner can come down. Because obviously, this ISN'T supposed to happen. So we eat breakfast and come back.

Scott didn't realize how much could be transferred through breastmilk so I explain to him (hysterically) while I try to choke down eggs and bacon. So now he's as white as I am.

We get back to NICU and there's fucking people everywhere. Long story short, the mom who's milk we got came to the hospital clean based off her medical history and tests. She agreed to another blood test just for peace of mind, which I was grateful for.

She came back clean. Yeah I could probably file a lawsuit but I don't see the point. He's healthy. And I hope someday my hesitation to not sue the pants off people I potentially COULD will come back in the form of good karma.

I hope that nurse was fired. While you are being very nice not suing, I would have INSISTED on that. Next time who knows if she'll mix up breast milk with HIV or something.

Good thing Scott and I are likely not having any more children. :D

EEEEEEK! At least they were extremely apologetic, and it's good that the other mother agreed to be re-tested for you. (She may have been as nervous as you were, thinking that maybe the same kind of thing could happen to HER baby!)

I was kind of surprised at all the checks my hospital did to make sure that they were bringing me MY baby when they brought her to us. My husband and I both got bracelets with an ID number that matched hers, and before the nurses handed over LilyAnne, they had us check the numbers. It was pretty comforting, though!

How's life going now with Riley at home?

We had the same thing. Shit still happens I guess.

Life is...hard. 8 hours of sleep is something I will never know again. I am going through a bit of that post-pardum baby blues shit but its mediocre. My mom comes over every day so I can get out of the house for an hour or so and NOT have to think about baby stuff, so that is extremely helpful.

I love Riley to pieces but I'm still missing out on my Its-only-me-and-my-selfishness life so its nice to get at least an hour of that out of the day. :)
