So I had an Upper GI endoscopy today. I've got some crappy stuff going on in my belly that I wanted checked out.
They gave me Fentanyl, some topical that I gargled for my throat, and Versed.
Well... I woke up during the procedure. It hurt. Bad. Bad enough to scream. Save for that there was a camera shoved down my throat.
I hope to god the fentanyl did wear off... if I'm under an opiate-analogue effect and still this upset, I can really look forward to freaking out more.
Especially freaky since the doc did "a few biopsies". But I have no ulcer. Just a Hiatal Hernia, an enlarged duodenum, and some "other abnormalities".

I've had this procedure done three times already. First time I woke up in the middle of it, too. Chances are, your throat hurts now because you struggled and you ended up hurting your esophagus. Same thing happened with me, and it hurt for a good week.
Beyond that, I personally think the crap you have to gargle is the absolute worst part. Tastes horrible, and burns like fire.

I've been through a bunch of ERCP's. Woke up and became instantly conscious during one. It didn't hurt, but it was extremely uncomfortable feeling something being moved and pushed around in my liver. But no screaming type of pain.

They better give me enough Versed to lose all forms of consciousness if I live to colonoscopy age.
Edited to Add: Or at least enough to make the green Jell-o highway look comical on the probe camera.

I woke up because my throat was hurting like hell.
edit: I dunno about that, actually. But I know that when I woke up, it was intensely painful, even with the painkiller.

They did not give you enough Versed.
I had the same thing happen to me, except that I became violent for the pain I was experiencing and yanked the doc across the bed by his tie. In the process I ripped my esophagus with the camera tube. That led to major surgery as they had to deflate a lung and do a thoracotomy to check and see if the tear required stiches or if it healed itself.
The other side effect of versed is that its supposed to make you forget the experience. If you remember then its clear that you did not get enough.

That really blows.
The wife woke up twice with a scope down her throat. Once while they were exploring (and then diagnosing) gall stones. And then she woke up within 5 minutes of going under for the surgery. She was awake through the entire procedure ... removing the stones and then the bladder.
It makes waking up during cartilage replacement on my knee look like a wuss complaint.

EDIT: Gargle and/or drink water with cayenne pepper for your throat. Seriously. Add lemon juice if you want.

I felt the way I do even before I read all this shit, but I had 'multiple mobile gallstones' revealed on an ultrasound a while back, and the doc wants to slice me open and take out my gall bladder. Ever since then i've had vivid dreams/visions/premonitions/wtfever you want to call them, that if I go for this surgery, somehow i'm not going to make it out.
I wish there was some non surgical way to deal with this.

The surgeon's description of my wife's gall bladder and stones "looked like a sack of caviar".
Surgery wasn't the end of it. Two weeks later she was admitted to the ICU for pancreatitis. A few stones made their way to the pancreas during the procedure.

People have done gall bladder cleansing and found relief. Basically it's a few days of a juice fast, then olive oil with lemon juice and you lay on your side and you supposedly pass a lot of stones.
I don't think you have much to lose by trying a cleanse then going back for another ultrasound.

Attempting a cleanse is way too risky. Sure, if the stone moves from the gall bladder into the stomach ... passed stone no problem. If it becomes lodged in the bile-duct or in the pancreas ... you've got problems, life threatening problems.
Also, the chances of developing more stones down the road is probably more of a foregone conclusion than anything.
I don't think there's a MD around that would suggest letting any gallstone pass.

My dad was not happy about going into surgery for his gall bladder, and was directed by his doctor to do a cleanse.
So I disagree that there's not a doctor around who would recommend it.
Either way, you could have life-threatening problems/complications. I know some people do cleanses just fine, some people don't and still have problems even if they go in for the surgery. Research your options, seek second opinions, etc.

Make sure your doc will consider arthroscopic surgery for the gall bladder removal before slicing and dicing. Way faster recovery time if he can. If he wont consider the option, consider getting a 2nd opinion. I had mine removed and was back on my feet by the 2nd day.

Another endoscopy horror story here.
I woke up about ten minutes into mine which was elective to just check and see if there were any issues and basically spent the next hour dry heaving while the camera was down my throat. Scariest shit I ever experienced.
Then the motherfucker wanted to schedule me for ANOTHER ONE after they found nothing the first time. I never saw that doctor again. Even though he was my HMO Primary care physician.
I even switched insurance programs to get away from that bastard. But I haven't done anything with my new PPO because I need to get my physical data from the old doctor and I just won't fucking speak to him.

I'm sure the pain from undiagnosed, stage IV prostate (or whatever other kind of) cancer won't be nearly as bad as waking up with a tube down your esophagus. Good call there.

All I know is that I needed a couple xanax to sleep last night. The thought of laying down and losing consciousness again wasn't a pleasant thought.
