Towards mid-end game, will I really see that much difference in using a short bow over a long bow?

And if so, are there any techniques to work around using a short bow and still being as effective?

There is a huge difference between short bow and composite, nevermind a long bow. If you're group hunting and want to contribute plinking damage to kneecaps, then a shortbow is okay. I would not recommend even thinking about a shortbow as a primary weapon, solo.
