I’m not going to argue with you that this is not a funny movie... at times. At other times there is nothing funny about it. It is a movie. And an homage with a funny twist but still true to it’s foundation. That is why this movie really rocks. The funny twist.

Shaun of the Dead and Knocked Up are two movies that I've seen start out funny (though SotD is admittedly more "spoofy") and then take a pretty serious/dramatic turn away from their original style. The difference being that it works like a charm in SotD and not at all in KU.
