This is really a decision you've gotta make on your own, not because other people say "You totally should!" or "You totally shouldn't!"

Make sure you just recognize all of the realities-- not just keeping it up in a cold room with 100 people watching you, getting paid shit, etc. And any other career, your family, your future family-- would you be okay if they found out about this? Would THEY be okay, and how much would it bug you if they absolutely weren't okay with it?

Once you do it and it's out there, you can never take it back. So think carefully about all of that.

I remember getting approached on a San Diego beach by a recruiter back when I was a naive 20 years old. She told me she worked for a local photography company and asked if I'd like to model for one of their photographers who was trying to augment his portfolio, and by the way, would you be willing to pose nude--artfully, of course. She somehow made it sound legit and I needed the money because I was new to the area and hadn't found work yet, so I called them up a week or two later and agreed to the photoshoot.

What a weird experience... The shoot was to take place in two locations: on the beach and in the studio. I met the photographer and his assistant near the beach, where they took me to a nearby surf store and bought me a pair of board shorts. Then we went down to the beach near the pier and took some "getting to know you" shots--me running through the shallows, doing handstands, etc. I'd never modeled before, so this part was actually a lot of fun. Then we moved under the pier and got to the more serious shots, in which I gave him my best 'Cold Steel.' It was when he started telling me to open the front of my board shorts more and more that I started to get the picture. As uncomfortable as I became, I will say the photographer was entirely professional the whole time, neither making lewd comments nor approaching me in any way.

So then we drove back to the studio, which, as soon as I stepped foot in it, I realized was an honest-to-God porn set. It was a huge room with different "sets" along its perimeter; there was a giant bed surrounded by fancy bedroom furnishings right next to what looked like a public shower, next to a set that looked like your local gym, next to a classroom. Almost immediately, I got incredibly anxious, a feeling that only got worse when they asked me to get naked and hop up on the bed. The next 45 minutes or so are somewhat of a blur as they did their best to coerce me into decidedly unartful positions. I refused offers of porn for "fluffer" material as I had no intention of showing them the full "extent" of my physiognomy. I can only imagine the facial expressions I was making in these photographs. All I wanted to do was leave.

But, finally, it was over. I put my clothes back on and the photographer complimented me on my first attempt at modeling and sent me to the receptionist to settle up. At the desk, I was given a check for a whopping $500 for 2 hours of work. Then they told me about their film division and offered me $1000 to star in one of their adult films. I was in too much shock to really process all of this, so I just thanked them, grabbed the check, hopped on my bike and got the fuck out of there. They assured me it was a standing offer and to call them anytime.

That was one of my first experiences in California and it's kinda stuck with me. I just remember feeling so dirty and uncomfortable, but I think a big part of that was that I didn't fully see it coming. I knew they were somewhat sketchy, but then when it actually happened... And God knows what happened to those pictures...

In any case, at least I was able to pay rent that month!
