If that defined them as Jews, they would have had to greet everyone penis first.

Abraham was avot, but his performing the first bris ... acting as the first mohel, just served as an example of obedience. It's now tradition in that it's a token of said covenant.

What defined Abraham as a Jew (the first) was monotheism (his belief in god) and how he proved his subservience to god. Focusing on circumcision ... well that's really narrowed vision considering the whole Isaac thing ... the whole god promising land to his progeny, that he would be avot to an entire people ... ugh.
