Have you ever said something and immediately realized that you crossed the line?

For some reason I remembered something today that happened earlier this year on Valentine's Day, and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I was at a skazzy club in Richmond (like there's any other kind) with some friends I used to hang out with while I was working there. By midnight, I'd downed enough shitty beer to be slightly belligerent, but still more or less in control of what I was saying.

I stopped paying attention to whatever the person I was talking to at some point and stared at the dance floor. The following conversation ensued:

Me: Hey...uh...did you guys notice that there's some dude in a wheelchair dancing with a girl in his lap and a bunch around him?

Buddy: Yeah...I bet this is the best night of his life though

Me: Well, the best night of his life except for the night before he lost his legs.

The dude and the girls he was dancing with all heard me. I felt like shit as soon as I said it, and even worse when everyone around me started laughing.

Yeah. I was talking to one of my lab partners after an orgo lab about eating a natural foods diet. I tend to try to stay away from things made from artifical chemical processes (no bread, no pasta, no sugar, no beef).

She started talking about her grandmother who is a type II diabetic, and I was still zoned into the whole "natural foods" discussion and started going off about how type II diabetics annoy me because they can prevent their disease; they simply choose not to. They get all the research money though because of our irresponsible life style.

I realized I sounded like a dick and apologized to her.

God I've uttered some absolutely horrid things while sober, let alone the shit that falls out of my mouth while drunk.

It's amazing I have any friends left at all.

I txted my ex-girlfriend about a month ago. I remember hitting the button like "This is the worst fucking decision of my entire life, to include that time in Vegas".

Luckily, she's out of the country and she'll not notice it when she gets back.

I sort of regret saying shit about Nieninque's sister; even though it was really funny to watch ParkBandit and her become best friends.

I don't know, Vinh. I don't really regret physically saying anything because unlike this weblog crap, I have a tremendous filter in real-life. Drunk, sober, whatever.

I regret things I've said (independent of what I've done beyond words) to kids my age when I was fourteen-ish. Like, I am sincerely sorry about some of the things my friends and I did to easy targets. It haunts me a bit. I fucking hate the fact that ten years later my dumbass friends still find the fact that they picked on these kids to be funny somehow.

I've never really regretted anything I've said to anyone, and I tend to call people out on a regular basis. Sure, there are things that should make me feel uncomfortable, but I rarely feel uncomfortable due to anything.

Not even the spooning motel picture?

I was at a drag show once and in conversation I said "oh I tolerate you people" in conversation and I almost got burned alive.

This is one of the things I regret not doing more of.

It tends to end up in more fights which I'm trying to avoid now days.

This is one of the things I regret not doing more of.

Same here.

I'm pretty passive unless someone gets in my face about something.

Coworker: Patrick Swayze is in a new TV series.
Me: Hope it's a short season.
Coworkers: Oh man....
Me: What?!

This is one of the things I regret not doing more of.

Me too. I don't much care for conflict in my personal life but there have been times where I now regret that I wasn't bit more verbally aggressive.

I only regret that some people don't have my sense of humor.

I'm just nitpicking here, but I really don't see it as a "decision" to say something crappy. Sometimes people just blurt shit out without thinking about it, which it seems was the case in the OP.

It's like me saying I regret the decision to bite my tongue this morning (it hurt).
