Ok, out of curiosity, what in the blue hell happened to John David Booty? Am I the only one dying to watch the Vikings come out of the tunnel to Ms. New Booty as he makes his first start? (the intro for it, at least... :p)
Gus is a bland Brad Johnson replacement with a better arm, which translates into EXACTLY Brad Johnson in the offensive scheme that Childress has cooked up. Why not inject something new, and see what they drafted themselves into? Tavaris will not be their franchise quarterback, but JDB has the potential to be (not to mention he's a proven winner with an affinity for the big stage, where Tavaris is all but notorious for choking in pressure situations at this point).
As a side note, WHAT IN THE BLUE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE MEDIA? I've seen the Vikings QB sideshow discussed on every show ESPN puts on, and there hasn't been a SINGLE mention of the potential superstar QB that the Vikings drafted. Mike and Mike in the Morning went so far as to say the Vikings didn't do anything in the offseason to improve their Quarterback depth, which is laughable. Gus (while not very dynamic in the least) is a MAJOR upgrade over Brooks Bolinger, and John David Booty has damn near every bit the potential of his predecessor in USC, Matt Leinart (both of which could very well become upper-tier QBs in the NFL, given time).

You're right in that he's a lot like Matt Leinart. Both over-rated.

I think if Childress had his way, Tavaris would still be the starter. I am pretty sure there is pressure from upstairs and probably a locker room mutiny. I live in MN, and I know there are a few veteran captains that have a weekly meeting with the coaching staff. I am sure guys like darren sharper, pat williams, matt birk, hutch who's careers are on the downslope need to win now, and dont want to wait for tavaris or especially JDB to develop. Also with the front office spending as much as they did in the off season they want some production. JDB is a 3 year plus project and Tavaris still needs sometime to develop. Gus is a vet and they can bring out more of the playbook with him, open up the run. Just my thoughts.

Number 1 draft pick overall and he can barely complete a forward pass...Jackson and Russel are a lot a like. Damn it is a J. I got a bit ahead of myself with a typical corndog fan

OH SHIT YOU GOT ME GOOD!!!!!111
Jamarcus Russell is over-rated, but what else would you expect from a jackass owner like Al Davis.
Talk about OVER-RATED! DeMarcus Russel

Running/mobile quarterbacks in the NFL do not win games. Ok they win games but they do not win when it counts....playoffs and Super Bowl. There has never been a running/mobile qb to win the Super Bowl...period..which of course is the goal of every team. Why they keep getting drafted is beyond me.
McNabb was a runner when he first came to the league. It has take some years but he has finally figured it out, was was evident last monday against Dallas. Now that he is a pocket QB, he is a much better QB.

Steve Young could run, granted, and he did run, granted...but he was never classified as a Michael Vick type. Hell Elway ran early in his career but they were still classic drop back QB's. Thats what wins.
I actually thought Russel looked decent. He makes some good laser passes every game he plays in but hes part of a team that is just FUBAR before the first snap. The exact opposite is going on in minn you have a high powered offense with a QB whipping the ball at shadows and running all over the place when he COULD be good. Russel I think is a victim of circumstance more than anything.

I think he's a damn fine QB, but I was talking over-rated as a number 1 overall pick. I think that's what the guy who was putting me in my place meant.
The way the NFL is today a decent QB is a solid #1 draft pick in my opinion lord knows you could get worse.

Meh, I'm not so sure anymore. People went nuts when players like Orlando Pace were taken by the Rams super-early, and look at what he accomplished. 1st round QB's have done too hot in the last decade.

the problem with rookie QBs is they are an investment. No QB does well their first year out of college. There are some that do well sitting on the bench a year or two , then come in. The problem is coaches only give rookie QBs fractional amount of plays to handle, they dont want to give them too much of the play book. It takes a few years to get that down, and until they do they limit the offense. The colts were terrible with Manning their first few years. Brady rode the pine, Favre sat a year. The vikes offense is limited w/ T-jack, Ferotte gives them more plays to use because he has been around, a QB slut.

Favre..Elway..Young..Montana all were mobile QBs.
You draft a QB #1 to justify the money paid. You aren't paying all that bonus money to a TE or a WR.

The Buc's have done a pretty good job of drafting second rounders if counts for anything.

Wait, why exactly isn't Booty ready if Tavaris was last season? He has the assistance of a veteran QB, a bonafide Quarterback guru, and a stellar offensive line that would even make a star of the exiled Daunte Culpepper all over again.
Booty ran a semi-pro style offense in USC, and while that may not immediately translate well, it puts him in a position to at least go in without being overwhelmed by complex systems in the NFL. Aside from that, he played in, by far, the most athletic and fast conference in college football throughout his tenure. That would most definately help his chances immediately in adjusting to the NFL game, where someone like Tavaris never had that type of experience in college.
Aside from that, nobody seems to think of the overall chemistry of this Vikings team. Tavaris refused to grab the reigns and really LEAD HIS TEAM, like a Quarterback needs to. Gus has almost always relied on his coach to lead the team from the sidelines... Really then, why not give a guy who is a proven, confident leader the reigns? All he needs to do is throw a solid slant pattern, an above-average fade route for Berrian and Shiancoe, and a decent 25 yard seam route which he showed the ability to do repeatedly. Aside from that, his only concern is the footwork and feinting he'll use when handing the ball off... Really now, why wouldn't he be able to succeed, and really have this "old" team rolling with a little bit of youth energy? The Patriots were "old" with Drew Bledsoe at the helm, as I'm sure plenty of you remember, but Tom Brady came in and revitalized them damn near single-handedly, making short term stars out of Troy Brown and David Patten (who have been getting paid simply on the value of their few good years in NE, might I add).
Hell, I think the comparisons are pretty fair between the Bledsoe-Brady Pats and this year's Vikings squad... A solid running game, a ridiculous defense, upper tier special teams (assuming Andre Allison kicks it into gear eventually), and a coach with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

Brady had time to prepare in the system in which he was in. JDB is a work in progress, but I'd have to agree with the others here. He's simply not ready for what the Vikings need, because VERY quickly people are going to start tossing eight in the box and stopping the run.

Eh, I guess you make a pretty reasonable arguement here, but I'm still not convinced that Gus gives them a chance to win more than eight games, which screams like a situation to simply find out what you have aside from him.

Once the Vikes lose 9 games, toss JDB in.
That would be my comprimise.
