If I get tattoos I want to see them. I don't see the point of getting something that I won't see if it's for me to have.

I was thinking of getting their names on my upper right arm and in toward the collar bone a bit. I'm going to have their names incorporated with blossoms of some sort. Haven't decided what but I like simple and small. Vines or branches are going to be in there.. that's as far as I've gotten with the idea.

Honestly though, all of my tattoos are from between when I turned 17 and 18 and they are all amateur. I'm trying to remember what I was thinking- at the time I think I assigned some deep spiritual meaning to some of them and the others I just did because... well, I mean, why not? Pretty glad I decided against the face tattoo I wanted.

One day I will have money that I can spend to replace crap ink with better ink... although I sort of forget they are there until my son tries to compare my arms or legs and notices the color differences.

After my first tattoo I immediately wanted more! I already have several planned, I just need to get the money together and go do it. (I usually blow said money on other useless stuff). Granted, I had a TERRIBLE first experience. The tattoo artist was very rude, but I was nervous since it was my first tattoo. This guy next to me, getting a tattoo on his forearm, passed out and went into convulsions IMMEDIATELY after the tattoo artist started on mine. And he didn't stop either! Just acted like it was completely normal! He went really deep and even though it has been years, my tattoo is still bump. And then he charged me $50 more than what they said after I was done with the tattoo.

Then again... When I got my chest tattoo done (the words) the girl who was doing it started hitting on me and trying to hook up. She also kept pulling the top of my blouse a little far down for my liking. Oh, memories!

I can finally participate in this thread! Admittedly, this is so small and personal that it really isn't a big deal and means zilch to anyone else. Still, it's my gateway tattoo. I found the pain easily tolerable so there will be more to come. I wouldn't even post this one if I hadn't made a thing out of it in the smile thread.I really like simple art in general and also tattoos, really nice! Plus you can freak people out by pretending its a pitchfork / devil symbol, it's dual purpose.

Okay, since I've got a pool of experienced tattoo people here... What sort of aftercare has worked for your tattoos? What I was told by my artist conflicts a bit with answers provided by Google Fu.

He put saran wrap over it and told me to leave it on for a couple of hours after, then take it off. He also told me to put more saran wrap over it at night for the first couple of days.

It's been two days. Should it already be scabbing? Sites have mentioned that a "good" artist won't go "too deep" (wtf is too deep?) and thus won't cause much, if any, scabbing. Is that true in your experience?

He told me to use plain Dial soap to wash it gently and then smear it with a thin layer of Aquaphor but only for two days. Then to just let it "dry out" and behave normally, except no swimming/submerging the tat. But now I've also heard that Dial's too harsh. Aquaphor is 41% petrolatum but a bunch of sites say definitely don't use petroleum-based anything.

I'm glad this is a small tattoo that's easily touched up if I do something wrong to it. There are just so many conflicting theories. I'd rather hear what worked for people I know.

I have a colored tattoo on my wrist. This is what I know:

Aquaphor is more permeable to oxygen than vaseline, so you're fine using it if you want to. I personally used triple antibiotic ointment after the first day.

Dial is an antimicrobial soap (also good for cleaning piercings) and was recommended to me by a friend but I think it's just preference. I didn't wash my tattoo with anything special other than what happened in the shower -- I just made sure that I rinsed my skin, pat the skin dry and applied ointment. I made sure to never let my skin become dry, if that meant carrying around the ointment all day, and putting it on when necessary.

My friend gave me Tattoo Goo and I used it after the first week. It calmed any itching. I never had any scabbing or peeling.

I have never done anything to my tattoos. I used to use A&D but now I just say fuck it. And all mine turn out fine.
All in all it's how your body handles it. A&D is probably one of the better ones if you feel a need to apply it. Alot of times they want you to wrap it and put that crap on it to not only promote healing but so you don't pick at it when it starts scabbing. Picking scabs is bad mmkay.

I never put anything on my tattoo when I got it. I kept it covered for the first day or so, but that is about it. It came out just fine. I guess if you have dry skin or something, then maybe.

Fresh ink today! We got the line work mostly done. There are a few areas that need touching up, but this is the bulk of the piece. Next sitting we will do color and shading, particularly over the trunk to cover the old tattoo underneath. It was once a tribal sun but after 2 pregnancies and massive weight gain/loss, it has morphed into a grey amoeba. Now it's going to be a knothole in the tree. After that, we are going to stretch a root system to wrap around my hips and probably finish off that shading and color in a fourth sitting.

Sounds like a wicked idea! I totally understand your perspective, but IMHO tattoos are a personal experience for everyone. Internally, I am super picky and opinionated about artwork, and yet I also respect an individual's rights to decorate or degenerate their bodies the way they choose. Like for instance, personally I would never put anyone's names on my body, even my children's. I have considered hiding their initials in the shading of the tree roots of my tat when it's done, but that's as close to a label as I want on my body. I know a lot of people who love their work forever and I know people who end up hating their art later. Just had this conversation with my boyfriend last night who expressed some remorse about getting a peglegged pirate on his calf, which at the time seemed like a good idea! My first tattoo was a badly drawn 1" heart on my ankle and as ugly as it is, I still love the meaning that I assigned it. My experience is that it's more about acceptance of oneself and body image.

I was thinking blooming onion at first, but it's semi transparent. So some kind of curving crystal fry shrine? It confuses me, but it's still better than Leifa's Fern Gully willow zipper tree, so you have that going for you.

Yeah, it's fairly abstract. There are actually a bunch of different crystals all up and down my arm, images taken with electron microscopes. They're laid on top of some flowers and trees, all weird personal things. The color was just picked at random to take advantage of my super pale skin.

I'm going to have to re-think my new Fern Gully tattoo now.

I'm reminded of the Linden tree on Teras. I'm not sure if it was ever fixed, but if you case phase at the crack in the tree you enter a set of rooms from an old storyline that were never removed. It is a pretty cool place.
