View Full Version : Baby Hamsters

Okay about a few days ago I got two hamsters, both girls. One was pregnant and I had no idea ... anyhow today she gave birth (off an on all day) to about 5 hamsters, she ate and tore apart all but one. That one is currently wiggling, but she doesn't seem to be paying any attention to it, she's not nursing it what so ever. Its just lying there now looking as if its going to die, is there a way I could save its life if the mother isn't going to?

You could kill it and save its pain.

However, that won't save its life and I'm perfectly okay with that.

Did you touch the babies? Or someone else? I can't imagine why the mother would kill them all and not have the instinct to nurture them. Unfortunately, most likely the other baby is going to die as well.

http://www.petwebsite.com/breedp.htm

Website on Hamster care. Some info there that might be able to help. Although the first bit only seems to help if you know beforehand...

Fucking idiot rats and all their sub-races.

Take this opportunity to take the mother and drown her. (or let her go if you're too soft) and get real animals (dogs, cats)

Christ almighty guys. She asked for a little bit of info and the most constructive thing you can come up with is tell her how many different ways to get it killed?

I've got a soft spot for hamsters and all but I don't see why the thread has to be derailed by mindless rodent hating.

I've gotten rid of all of them, except for four now. I couldn't deal with another litter, as I don't have the accomodations to handle more than four rats.

I kept the father of the two litters and the other three are his boys. One looks just like him and the other two are albino.

Anyone who says that rats aren't 'real' animals can kiss my ass. They're just as sweet as any cat or dog.

Rats aren't "real" animals.

For me, a "real" animal must be/have

1) fun and/or compensate affection/emotions of an human

2) utility.

I see no utility in rats, therefore, they are bad animals.
As bad as spiders, iguanes, et cetera.

My water dragon is awesome... he sits on people's shoulders and hangs out and whatnot. And sometimes he scampers around on our couch. My brother's girlfriend even has a little lizard leash that she uses to take him for walks around the house with. He definitely has his own little personality, too. I mean, come on... he's Leon, the lizard ladies' man. He has to be cool.

Utility in a house pet? Are you looking for a farm animal or a PET. What utility is there really in a dog or a cat? You get to feed them and clean up when they crap the carpet?

A spider has some use, depending upon the type as it can help to catch flies and other airborne nuiances.

Dog? hmm, dog.. dog can.. hm, defend you? at least those that are a bit more than just 5 pounds.

And cats, cats are good for "affectioning" people

Number #1 choice in zootherapy.

You can join the "utility" with the "fun" (french expression)

Sure, a golden fish is cute. Cute..

My rats are quite snuggly and affectionate. They know who I am and they go nuts when I come into the room.

Stop dissing the rodents. Rodents are good pets.

*sigh* the last hamster, Squishy, was fine last night and in the middle of the night, seems now the mom squished Squishy and ate his head, *groan*, do you think I should be upset with the mother? I like her, but I'm angry that she killed him, there was no reason for it, if there were a reason he would of been gone last night ... gah she ate the entire litter.

Nature's law. Been that since, since always.

Be human and avenge yourself, or be patient.

Or follow my advise.

Did you take the other female out of the cage with them?

Halfsilver
01-15-2004, 11:27 AM
Yeah she did.

I've since disowned the stupid hamster.

I don't want to take care of anything that eats it's own offspring. blech.

The little hamster was waving his arms and was so helpless, and she suffocated him.

The hamsters are all yours now, hun. I'll just stick to the cat.

PS. maybe I'll feed the hamsters to the cat.

How about telling him by turning your head and saying it by talking since he lives with you?

options:

1) Kill the canibale mother and get a more smarter pet

2) keep it

3) do something else

Besides, we have Graysy, our cat. He's sort of smart. As far as cat's go. heh.

Hey, X... they bought the hamster because they wanted it. Shut the fuck up and stop telling them to kill it and get another pet.

Having an opinion about animals that aren't cats or dogs is one thing, but forcing your opinion on others and telling them to kill their pets is a little extreme.

It's written on your profil that you are at work. I would do that too, coming in a forum and talking to my girlfriend there, phone is so out of date.

My lists rule, as they are the most logical things to do, rather than trying everything and then realizing you were wrong. I don't know what you got, I don't know your life, I don't know your pets, I know nothing, even about you 2. Keep your cats and stop killing useless rats for god's sake!

p.s. what is a cocksmocker?

They aren't forced to do anything of what i'm telling them. Even that cocksmocker teller saids he's pissed at that rat and was thinking into giving it to his cat.

If they feel pressure and do what i'm telling them to do, I think the problem is elsewhere, then

It's you. =)

CellPhones aren't allowed passed the security check point here at my office, and I'm not going to leave my desk just to go say what I did to my girlfriend from a payphone.

ok? Thanks.

The relevance of this to the subject of the thread totally eludes me.

Anyways, I was very disappointed to find out that the last of the litter was killed during the night, even though I was kind of expecting it. It has really turned me away from owning rodents of any kind.

Or did the mother care for them as she was supposed to?

My Moms were the perfect mothers. Even with two different litters in the cage, who were spaced about 6 days apart, I had no trouble at all. Most of the time you would see each of the Moms nursing a mix of the two litters.

I never had to poke or prod either into feeding the babies. And the biggest pain in the ass I had with them, was the fact that one was overly protective and put a few good bites down on me.

I told C that we should get rats. Rats are better than hamsters.
I'm going to go look at them at the pet shop.

If you decide to get rats, I'd try to get one with some coloring. It's been my experience that albinos aren't good for new owners, as they tend to be skittish and less willing to 'attune' to their new owners. I've had my two albinos since they were born, and they're still noticably more shy than the other two.

Halfsilver

I'll keep that in mind, Peam.

I'd rather have black ones with white markings, anyways.

I'll take pictures and post them when I get them, Jessa.

We'll go this weekend.

I have to second the vote with rats. My rat rocked. He used to go just about everywhere with me. He would ride on my shoulder and watch everything going on as I wondered around the house doing what ever. I even got kicked outta the local store when I went to go buy milk, and forgot that he was on my shoulder.

Growing up in a house with two older step-brothers, we had quite a few pets. First it was the chamileons(sp - too lazy to look it up), then came the fish, then came the fish that have a reputation for eating other fish, then a snake, then came the pit bull.

I guess you can say they've gotten meaner as the years go by, though the pitbull was one of the friendliest animals I've ever known.

Want some kicks? Throw mice in the rat cage (or aquarium or whatever it is you got). Fun for everyone (except the mice).

Also, X (on this topic) is absolutely right.
