Another WTF: Vista + Lich + Psinet

So I've followed the below . . . and I can only get PsiNet to work. What the Christ? What's weird is every time I try to install the registry, it doesn't work.

It says, permission denied then modification of system successful (it's not) then see the directions in the lich directory (which I have until my eyes have bled).


A well formed opinion if I ever saw one.

For PsiNet to work with lich, it must be installed AFTER lich. To return your configuration to the default, run the 'restore registry' bit in lich, then uninstall PsiNet. (You can use the same installer downloaded from my website to do this, http://www.psinfinity.net)

Then, reinstall the SGL (not SGE), available at http://www.play.net/software/lnchinst.exe.

At this point, check that you can login to the game. You should login without PsiNet and without lich, a plain vanilla game. If you cannot login at this point, double-check the steps above! Lich's restore and PsiNet's uninstall clean up after themselves, but installing the SGL should wipe out any changes they made and enable logins.

With this complete, install lich and use the "Install to registry" link. Verify that you can login to the game using the SGE, with lich and without PsiNet. If you cannot, contact Shaelun.

Finally, install PsiNet using the latest installer from my website.

If you have any further problems, feel free to contact me (my information is on the website), be be aware that I will likely ask you to remove lich from the equation, as I cannot truly support that software.

Alright, I got a plan jane copy of SF to load properly from the SGE.

I installed lich.

I tried to install to registry and got this:


Note: registry value "C:\Program Files\Lich\lich.exe" %1' containes the substring 'lich', will not overwrite saved key value with a self-modified key value.

I also tried to run lich and force SF mode and got this:

Found this in the ChangeLog for the SGE. Is this meaningful?

o Moved all settings out of win.ini and private
registry files into main registry.

This has worked for me only if I uninstall lich and psinet then install lich, then install psinet. If you did that already I dont know what to say has worked for me on vista every time.

Installing Psinet and Lich under vista was a pain in the ASS for me. I had to uninstall EVERYTHING (lich, SF, Launcher, wizard, psinet), then scrub the living hell out of my registry. Wholesale searches for anything SIMU, PSINET, LICH, SF, STORMFRONT, anything I could think of. Deleted every last one of them. Rebooted my system, and installed the launcher (to its default location, NOT to the Psinet location), then ran SF (vanilla). Then installed lich, did the auto-register thingie twice (ignoring the first failure message), loaded the game to confirm lich worked, then installed psinet. Everything works now, but I was pulling my hair out too.

That's just it -- I can get it to run SF vanilla but when I install lich it doesn't load properly.

PsiNet isn't even an issue at the moment. :( :( :(

I completely cleaned the registry and uninstalled everything.

I now can get into SF via SGE perfectly.

I install lich.

I try to to force stormfront - nothing - program closes immediately.

I try to install to registry: error, key 'Software\Classes\Simutronics.Autolaunch\Shell\Ope n\command\' does not exist

Note: I can get in fine via SGE . . . I reinstall SGE and try to install to registry I get the following pictures for reference:

Alright, here's the deal.

Lich v3.57 will NOT work with vista.

Lich v3.50 WILL work with vista.

This makes me sad :(

HOW TO FIX?

Odd... offhand it sounds like the glib DLL isn't compatible. What's that mean, you may ask -- a DLL file is a DynamicLinkLibrary file. It's code just like any other program's .exe file, but it's in a modular sort of format and is able to be loaded and used by multiple programs. Lich v3.51+ uses glib-2.0 to help parse XML. Lich v3.50 doesn't. That's all I can think of.

Maybe some Vista guru here can tell you how to make Vista use an old-style glib-2.0 DLL file the same way WinXP uses it... but I don't have a copy of Vista, nor do I really know a damn thing about it, in all honesty. Sorry man. Could always try downloading a Vista-compiled one somewhere and replacing the one in Lich's directory I guess.

I got the idea yesterday from a Synergy problem I was having.

I right-clicked on the "force-stormfront" executable and changed to run it as administrator (I already am but eh, tried it for grins).

It worked. I have no idea why or how. It just did.

I can't get it installed on my vista laptop either.

I deleted everything, my simu folder and psinet folder and lich folder, everything gone.

login to game vanilla, works
restart
install lich
do the registry thing twice
login to game with lich, works
restart
install psinet
login to game with lich
FAIL
The Psinet welcome popup hangs with the status of "Waiting for FE" and just hangs and hangs and hangs. No wizard is ever launched.
