View Full Version : Adopting a thing.

So like, i'm adopting this dog, right. And I don't exactly know what I want to get yet.
I don't want a big dog
And I don't want a small dog.
Some would say i'm looking for a medium dog.
But that wouldn't be politically correct.
I want a Corgi, but I know nothing of their temperment or anything. Anybody know anything about them?
I spent most of my childhood raising lab puppies(not the kind I stick with needles. Labrador retrievers.) Anyway, I like them and all but I don't want another Lab based on the fact that it would feel like betraying my previous dog, who died due to...extrenuating circumstancecs when I left Maine.
Anyway, anybody know of any ::cough:: medium sized dogs with good temperments? I'm not really sure what kind of breed i'm looking for, so i'm open to suggestions.

I'm told Irish Setters are nice.
Though really, I'd go for a mutt if I were you. Generally speaking, they're hardier without the genetic defects that most pure breeds have had bred into them.

Mutts are less expensive too. They normally turn out to be the best dogs a lot.

Yeah I was looking at a few Corgi/beagle mix, but I'm wary of beagles. The ones i've had experience with haven't had the best temperments.

The one I had was a hunting dog. It was a great hunting dog, however for a pet, no thanks.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of. I wouldn't mind a Corgi/lab mix because they're both supposed to have good temperment, but I dunno. I should just get a guinnea pig and pretend it's a dog.

I had a beagle growing up, my parents still have her. She is a great dog.
Right now I've got a weiner dog, best dogs in the world.
Cocker spaniel/mix are great dogs I've had a few pure bred and a mutt loved them both.

Actually, I do like dogs and there are many pro's to them compared to cats. However I don't like how dumb 80% of dogs are. Cats are more complex.

Corgi's are great dogs! I have one now, and he's wonderful. He's never been a problem, no excessive barking (in fact, the only time he EVER barks is if someone knocks on the door). He's also a great apartment dog.. I take him for walks, but he gets out a lot of energy inside. The only problem I ever have is shedding. He sheds like crazy, unless I brush him a few times a week, which isn't a problem for me, but to some it may be. I honestly can't rave enough about him. :)

I had a cat. I want a dog. Or a Guinea pig. I posted my cat's picture somewhere on the forums. His name is Stalin. He kills Russians.

Corgi's are cool dogs, I used to raise them in NY. The hair is an issue tho, other then that I would highly recommend them.

I support getting a mutt. Go to your local Animal Shelter and find one that you "click" with.
Chances are you'll be happiest that way.
And you'll save $.

Definetly go to the animal shelter and find one that you like. Those little guys need a new home and not to mention you'll save money. I love animals. I'd probably have a zoo if I had the room.
Best mix I've ever seen was a lab/spaniel mix he was the best tempered dog I've ever had. To bad someone stole him. Bastards.

Animal shelter. Pssht. Stop living in the dark ages! petfinder.com
:P
Note: This is not an admission that the dark ages happened in the way that it is said that they did, or did not as it may be. Because they didn't. Also fuck you.
And if I wasn't clear enough, just kidding on the fuck you.

I hate small dogs.. they yip and they bite and they have like no bladder so they pee everywhere. My aunt has the most annoying little dauchands. I love big dogs. Golden retriever's (obviously) are the best. I think a sheep dog might be good.. like the English ones that are just so cute. Also the really big dogs are a lot calmer. I think.. irish wolfhounds?
My english springer spaniel is the cutest dog ever.

Well I don't want a big dog, Christina. But I don't want a small yippy dog either. I mean, lab sized MAX i'd say. and small lab at that. I liked my basset hound even though she was an angry little bitch, and I like the corgi one of my co-workers owns. So naturally corgi was my first choice. So i'm thinking about adopting a mix like that.

Crazymage's dog is the best kind.
Shepherds or mixes with shepherd in them.
They're loving and affectionate and the most loyal dogs you'll ever own.
Definitely get a dog with Shepherd in them, neff.
Here's my pup, Casey. He'll be 12 this year. He's the person I miss the most in Maryland and I can't wait untill this spring when we move back so I can take care of him again.

Get an animal from the SPCA. Yeah, they come with lots of mental baggage from being abused, but once you help them get over that, they're amazingly loyal. And you're like...rehabilitating an animal. How cool is that?
Snapp
01-12-2004, 07:31 PM
I have to agree with the SPCA.. try there first. You might even find a Corgi or one of the mixed types you've mentioned.. The only reason I have a Corgi is because my ex-roommate insisted on it (and I love him to death), but I would have been happy to take one of the ones I saw in the SPCA. Also Neff, have you considered a Schnauzer? They seem to be the medium size you want, and they're also wonderful dogs, I grew up with 3 of them.

Since Neff shrank this for me and she's so cute.. this is the type of dog all people should own.
And yeah those are antlers on her head. She was yawning when I took this picture.

Get a big dog.
Big dogs you can hug and don't worry about stepping on. You can pet them while you're still standing up.
My Newfoundland:
http://members.cox.net/legendwezas/Penny.jpeg
She was just a puppy then. Now she's about 130lbs and takes up half the couch. (we were training her to have a treat on her paw and not go for it until we said "ok")
*edited to add: My mom has a corgi mix. Make sure you read the "gets along with" properly. Her dog hates other dogs and has nipped at my girl and my little brother when they leaned over to pet her.
P.S. The corgi looks like an alien, have you seen their eyes?

Welsh Corgi. All the way. Or one of them big dogs the Swiss use to carry around beer (or whatever) to avalanche victims.
Also, Wezas' avatar takes WAY TOO LONG to load. And she's not hot. She looks about 12 years old.
Cats are dumber than dogs. Think about it.

Anyhoo, I wanna get a beagle once we get a house with a yard. I love beagles.

Knew it was only a matter of time. She's hella old now, she's 30ish. So Weedie still has a few decades on her.

Grew up around animals, had 8 Huskies. Funnily enough we also had a cat for a few years until it fell off the fence into the dog pen and was viciously mauled...yet survived to die a slow painful death. Anyway huskies! Yeah! big dogs are the best...though during that time i had my own dog. Half Husky Half Alsation (german shepard) best dog i could ever hope to have. Sadly when i moved to the states we said our goodbyes and that dog i had from when i was 2 was gone *sniff*
Funny thing is my step mum had a dog just like him..awesome friendly dog.
Go with half husky half german shepard!! Medium sized dog with lots of loving

And stop letting her dress you too.

Not all hounds bark alot. This dog only barks when we are playing around or when he is messing with the cat. I've heard all the tales about how hounds are stupid, need to run, dig holes, howl for no reason, bark constantly, etc.... It's all about training.. if you don't want your dog to bark alot, you train him not to.

Yeah I guess you're right. I had a basset that I trained pretty well. She was still stubborn as crap though.

Actually.. my mother has horrible taste. Something like Country meets Country. She would have me in overalls with no shirt or shoes and a piece of hay between my teeth... playing a banjo and saying "You have a purty mouth"
