View Full Version : my new apartment in DC

I am fucking STOKED!
One bedroom, 3 yr old building (brand new appliances, granite countertops, etc), individually owned condo in Galary Place (777 7th St). Literally 45 feet from the Chinatown/Gallary Place metro.
I have NO idea why -- but he was only asking 1675/mo. The next cheapest 1 bedroom in the same building (same floor plan) was 2300/mo. He's got just this one property and I think he was looking for the most stable, hassle-free tenants -- and in walked the married white mid-western couple with professional degrees. In anycase -- FUCKING WIN!
So now, for those of you living in DC -- what do I do about a car? We discussing a few options. One is parking in the building ($210/mo). Another is parking at a corporate lot and metro'ing to the car if we go skiiing or whatever. Finally -- sell the car (save insurance/registration/parking) and just use services like ZipCar. Anyone have advice? More specifically -- have you used ZipCar and/or know of cheap corporate parking garages.

sell the car. i sold my car when i moved back into DC (after an ill-advised jaunt into VA for 9 months). Save on...registration, parking, insurance, gas, repairs, etc etc etc. A car in DC is a money-pit, especially with you living so close to the metro. ZipCar is a good alternative.
Also, thanks for volunteering your couch for my visits. I know know where you live.

Blech! Living in DC itself--constantly assailed by bums, horrible tax rate, high crime rate, full of obnoxious tourists.. I'd stick to the Virginian suburbs. Even in Tysons, can get a 3BR apartment for the same price you're paying, and get to keep my car.
Hate the city itself.

After 4 years in west LA, our first priority was proximity to a metro. We don't plan on using the car for anything other than traveling out of the metro area.

Our apartment is within walking distance (about a 4-5 minute walk) to the West Falls Church metro station, and supposedly they're going to be building a Tysons stop, which would be nice. Less traffic, hopefully.

VA blows yak cock. Falls Church is a shithole. Whenever people say anything positive about VA, I think that they must be well over 30, completely devoid of any need for social interaction with any interesting individuals, and/or functionally retarded.
Seriously, saving money on rent is not a reason to suffer through the drudgery of VA.

The downside is your monthly payment is more than what I'm paying for my house. The upside...you're not in Indiana.

That was sort of our opinion.
Our second option was in Dupont Circle and our third was in Cleveland Park.
We looked at 19 apartments in 2 days -- the only one from VA in our top 10 was in Courthouse. VA reminds me of a frat-house for 30+ yr old corporate douchebags.

Except that our taxes are lower, Fairfax and Loudon counties have extremely low crime rates, rents are far cheaper, and I can get to DC, should I want to, in twenty minutes, and actually have a place to park my car? And for other people to park their car when they come visit, as opposed to getting raped by garages?
DC is dirty, full of annoying tourists, the air smells like shit, everything is more expensive (see the "tourists" again), people can't drive for shit, and the cops are even bigger assholes than they are in Virginia. Even living in Arlington would be better than the overpriced shithole of DC, but suffers from some of the same issues.
I get to keep way more of my income for the things I actually want, can save more money, etc. Makes zero sense to live inside the city unless your job is right inside and you have no need/desire to travel anywhere else, or you make mountains of cash and don't care either way.
He wants to live in DC? Congrats for getting the apartment. I'd personally like to keep more of my money for enjoyment or saving purposes.

funny, because VA drivers are fucking morons who wouldn't know how to drive around a traffic circle if they were the only driver within a square mile.

hahaha...Ashliana is just wrong. there is plenty of parking in DC as long as you're not trying to park up Lincoln's ass at the Memorial.
plenty of room for your caddie. and you can get all day parking in most of the "OMG TOURIST" neighborhoods (Georgetown, Adams Morgan, downtown) for $8-20/day.
edit: i hate VA.
Congrats on the condo.
You ought to see if you can purchase it from him if you really like it. Would make a good investment if you ever decided to move (especially since its like new).
I envy you in not having to have a car. I really wish we had that kind of transportation system set up here in Houston. Too much land/coverage for that here I believe. Not having to drive everyday to work would be sweet. Only downside would be grocery shopping if you lived more than a few blocks from the store. Home delivery FTW!!!
Ashliana

well, you'd be wrong. you're as unwelcome as the "hicks."
You're an idiotic, humorously arrogant and self-superior, smug asshole if you think you can tell the difference between someone from northern Virginia that lives less than ten miles away, by any measure--attitude, income, accent, fashion, etc.
funny, because VA drivers are fucking morons who wouldn't know how to drive around a traffic circle if they were the only driver within a square mile.
You're right! I love being on the road with a hundred, highly aggressive taxis at any given time that run red lights, cut people off and switch three lanes without using a signal.
1) because they have to deal with annoying VA tourists
2) VA cops are reject DC cops
Makes absolutely no sense, like the rest of your "argument."
like enjoying the sweet VA nightlife...
And completely glossing over anything that I said. I have quick access to DC via the car that I actually have, or the metro that's within a five minute walk. The only thing that "you have" that "I don't" are higher taxes, higher crime rates, worse traffic, more pollution, far higher rents, loads of tourists, and --oh. Where's your benefit, versus my situation? Slightly faster access to the nightlife you so crave?
Enjoy waking up when you're actually grown up in a few years and haven't saved nearly as much money as someone that actually weighed their options well and made the same amount as you did. Then enjoy watching them move into their own, larger, nicer house--still with quick access to anything you can enjoy in a few minutes more. Makes very little sense to live in the district itself.

also, Keller, i just realized exactly where that is--Clyde's, Legal Sea Foods, Zaytinya (amazing tapas), Fado, Five Guys, Zola, Rosa Mexicana (some of the best guac in the city), Ruth's Chris, Jaleo, Acadiana (awesome southern), Brasserie Beck, Capitol City Brewing...
those are all within...1.5 blocks of your place? I hate you.

also, as a treat for you and the wifey, you might want to take her to The Source. it's the new Wolfgang Puck restaurant that opened up....8 months ago or so? it's about 4 blocks away from your place. it's asian fusion and quite expensive, but definitely worth the experience.
maybe a nice treat once you guys get settled in? or even to go for appetizers and a cocktail.

My roommate and I were shelling out $1900 a month for a 2 BR / 2 BTH in Ballston before I moved back to the suburbs. I think our total square footage was around 1050?
Different life choices, I guess. In the last several months, I've only felt a sporadic need for city night life on weekends. I've been living a fairly spartan lifestyle to (eventually) be able to buy a house, so there's probably been a good amount of "fun" time sacrificed. On the flip side, since graduating in May 2006 I've been able to pay off $41k of student / car loans, sock away $24k in my 401k / Roth, send my parents $14k, and save $17k. Not bad for a 23 year old, I guess.
As far as keeping a car goes, I ran some numbers awhile back and (assuming $0 terminal value and 7 yr life) it was costing me something like $600 a month to keep / maintain / park my car. I've heard good things about ZipCar, and you can metro almost anywhere you need to go.

Your argument would make more sense if you were talking about Manhattan and a far-removed suburb. I can get to Dupont Circle, for instance, faster than someone can get there from Catholic University.
You can assume that you make, and save, more money than me; but it's irrelevant, even if it's true. Someone that lives in the city but makes the same amount as I do is not able to save as much as I can, while maintaining even remotely the same standard of living. The same holds true, regardless of income level because the cost of living, for a reduced standard of living, is higher than it is elsewhere.
You're arguing that the benefits of the city more than make up for it--maybe when the novelty of getting drunk off your ass and being able to walk back to your apartment wears off, you'll realize that in every place in DC--every event, nightlife destination, etc, is full of people that came from either VA or MD, because DC itself is a tiny, commuter city. That "nightlife" wouldn't exist without the income we bring into it.
DC is a decent place, but you're making the greater metropolitan area out to be a lot worse than it actually is, and coming off as incredibly snotty in the process.

I just moved from a place like 3 blocks from you closer to dupont. It was amazing. My drunken staggers took like 15 minutes tops. Ever.
Now I need to figure out where to go. I have plenty of friends around the area. So, I'm definitely down for a PC meet up.
Which firm did you end up working at? I also know a few girls who work in that area. I'd laugh if you knew any of them.
Also, I hope you don't mind the roving bands of 14-17 year old punk kids that swarm chinatown after dark. I'm from the south side of Chi and that shit kinda gets to me.
Finally, Fuck your car. Metro. Do a Zipcar or become a preferred member at Avis for the weekends, but seriously. You won't ever leave the district unless you're like fucking tubing in WV (which is a horrible idea on July 5th btw. Horrible Horrible fucking idea).
Finally, Ashliana is dumb as fuck. I made the mistake of going out once to the Clarendon Ballroom. Mistake. The night ended with me getting into an argument with some 19 year old hick. Classy.

For the record I'm down for drinks when I get into town. Let's make it happen.
Like I said -- I've got access to an amazing deck overlooking the intersection of 7th and H. We could pre/post drink there.
The part where the building is cut out is all open space with nice patio furniture.
http://view.admission.net/abc/apartments/161073/002/BL01-01-1_32.JPG
Down with the DC drink if you all will have me. Despite what some people will try to lead you to believe I am a very jovial and leisurely spirit.
As for the car question I think it boils down to cost vs. usage. You can easily live without a car. The biggest hassle is getting what you need back home. Such as groceries or furniture. I can’t think of a large market walking distance to that location. Though there may be a Whole foods just a few blocks away. There is a Bed Bath & Beyond very close.
I kept my car but my condo has a space in the parking lot off the street. Plus I have family and friends in Murylun. When I lived in NYC I ditched the car in a heart beat as I rarely ever left the island and when I did it was to drive down to Murylun a few times a year.

That's just the cost of working in a major market.

I'd say cost of living is fairly high here without looking it up. I live in one of the biggest metro of our land and on 100 yards from gulf of mexico. Pinellas county is also the most densely populated in the state which makes traffic in this county and the tri county tampabay area suck ass most of the commute time.
We have no rails only buses :(
I'm happy to pay $1000 a month for what I got even tho the market has dropped and I could possibly get it much lower in the $800 range right now with supply and demand.

There ARE cheaper apartments around here (that don't suck), but finding them is a pain in the ass. I spent three months looking before I settled on my current one bedroom (at $1200 a month). If you don't have the flexibility to go to showings the day you see the ad and move on a few day's notice (ie, if you're not already local), it ain't happening.

$1200/month? where? how many sq. ft? how many other apartments in the building? doorman? you paying utilities?
without seeing the apartment and taking your word for what you deem a "non-sucky" apartment, that's a nice find.
and i agree--a lot of it has to do with taking your time searching for a place and having a good deal of luck

Hah. Well, if you like big buildings, you'd probably find mine sucky. Me, I've lived in multi-units and I hated it. Dealing with neighbors who bitch every time I don't walk on tiptoe or blast hymns at five in the morning=way too much hassle. And I prefer having my own front door and outside space.
So yeah, basement unit. Floor to ceiling windows in the living room and bedroom. One block from metro and restaurants. A pool in the backyard, a functional fireplace, and no neighbors to care if I decide to throw a party or rearrange all my furniture at three in the morning (the buildings to either side are offices, and my upstairs landlord is away on travel 50-75% of the time). Bliss.
(Around 600 square feet, and around $75 a month for gas/electric/Internet, for what it's worth.)

Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread, I was PC-less for a week.
Gratz on the apartment, it sounds like a great deal, a steal in fact. My stupid condo is almost 3k/mo for 1100 sq ft (2 br) and I'm out in Arlington.
I think it's very possible to ditch your car. I live in Ballston (I loved that 30+ frat comment, it especially applies to Clarendon) and I usually only use my car once a week on average for groceries/beer. I could even walk to get those if I lived a little closer to the grocery store or if I got a bike. Ballston also has a (shitty) mall, movie theater, and a ton of restaurants, all within a couple of blocks of the Metro and my condo. I imagine a place like Gallery Place would be awesome to live.
About once every couple of months I find myself needing my car (brunch with a relative, Home Depot or Target, party a friend's out in the suburbs, etc) but I could potentially use a ZipCar for that. Another option is a scooter. I see quite a few around Arlington so I assume they're popular downtown too. My car is paid for and extremely cheap to maintain so I doubt I'll get rid of it any time soon, especially since a parking spot comes with my condo, but it's nice to know I could live without it when it eventually dies.
If I stay in the DC area I'd like to try living downtown for a year or so and Gallery PL is one of the main areas I'm considering.

I don't think I've ever seen a single person in the "suburbs" riding a scooter or Vespa. I see them in DC itself frequently, though. Segways, too.

I think I went to a party in that building once, bunch of Navy guys, you got a great deal. Try the peach sangria at La Tasca.
I had a car in DC pre-zipcar days, and nothing beats the munchie drive to dunkin donuts (there are none in DC). If I lived in DC I'd probably get rid of mine, but I enjoy driving too much, and I know how to get around. But if you're a noob just do zipcar. I live between Crystal City and Old Town, Alexandria. I love it, and pay a lot less in income taxes, and the movie theater I go to isn't a piece of shit (and it's better than the Gallery Place one).
Ashliana- You fucking act like DC is the third world. My IQ drops even considering how sheltered/ignorant/retarded you are. Loudan County? First of all, it's Loudoun county--which happens to have had the highest income per-capita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudoun_County,_Virginia) of any county in the nation. It goes back and forth with Fairfax. It's also the fastest growing county in the nation. Apparently, in direct contradiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudoun_County,_Virginia) with your miraculously ignorant statement.
Next time, try actually knowing what you're talking about before you pull this garbage out of your ass and try to pass someone else off as ignorant, dumbass.

Her Wikipedia article mentioned the period in which that might or might not have been true. She just left that part off her point. ;)
Loudoun County (pronounced /ˈlaʊdən/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English) "LOUD-un") is a county (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_(United_States)) located in the Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_(United_States)) of Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia), and is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Metropolitan_Area). As of July 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_of_July_2006), the county is estimated to be home to 268,817 people, [2] (http://www.census.gov/popest/counties/tables/CO-EST2006-01-51.xls) a 58 percent increase over the 2000 figure of 169,599. That increase makes the county the fastest growing in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) during that period.

I'm not sure how the person who wrote the Wikipedia article came to their conclusion. But the Census Bureau also states, for 04-05,
Rounding out the top 10 were three counties in Virginia: Loudoun, near Washington, D.C., ranked eighth with a population increase of 6.8 percent
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/population/006563.html
USA Today also reported Loudoun, in '04, was the fastest growing, period.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-04-08-loudon-growth_x.htm
I don't think they're talking about year-to-year growth, however. In any case, the point still stands. People were/are flocking to the area. The richest people in the area live in Loudoun and parts of Fairfax (McLean, etc). It's much nicer, overall. What do I see when I go? (My mother lives in Cascades, in Sterling--Loudoun, one of the nicer areas.)
I see immaculately attended gardens, brand new, well-tended roads, new infrastructure, impressive, stand-alone houses with big yards and clean air. What do I see when I go through DC? Dirty air, bums on the corner, litter EVERYWHERE, and the dingy gray filth that blankets the city. No thanks.
DC isn't a horrible place to live, but there are nicer, close-by. His arguments were that:
"No one wants to live there." (Bullshit. It's had one of, if not the, most explosive growth rates in the nation.)
"People only live there because they can't afford a nicer area." (Also bullshit. Per capita income was highest in the nation, and switches over from Fairfax, the neighboring county).
Awww fuck, Gan beat me. And had flashier colors. Man, I just lost at the internet today.

I guess it depends on how you're defining "elitist," then. If it's the magical, "means anything I want it to mean" definition we've heard so often from conservatives today, then maybe everyone you say is, is. But no, calling someone out on bullshit using OMG BOLD TEXT is not elitist under any definition of the word.

Would that example be given in your earlier response about Loudoun county being the fastest growing county in the nation (while leaving off the all important *in that period* clarifier in your earlier post? Especially when you completely went off on the guy in the next paragraph about knowing what one is discussing before posting garbage pulled out of ones ass.

No. I didn't see the "during that period" point, is all. That wasn't the crux of the issue, anyway. You can try and stick to it all you like, but all it means, for the sake of my argument, is that it actually was, at some recent point, fastest growing in the nation. Meaning his argument was bullshit--that "nobody wants to live there," and the highest-median-income point also refutes the "people only live there because they can't afford better." Loudoun is that better area.
What's your point? I didn't pull anything out of my ass. I at least looked it up, compared to someone's magical inventions based on his ignorant preconceptions.
In a nutshell, you looked it up on Wikipedia and did not verify the data. Then you used said data to pounce on the other poster and refute what the other poster posted. Then proceeded to flame.
Your wording is like someone claiming that Arnold is the strongest man in the world. And the truth of the matter was that Arnold is (was) the strongest man in the world during the time period of x to x+1. What is said and what you represent are and can be different things. Like the earlier example given.
Then you try and say you dont sound elitist?
I believe CT (and myself on earlier occasions) have pointed out that this is your modus operundi when you debate here. At times you bring up great arguments and spot on analysis. Then at other times you come back and rebut with vague cover ups and topic shifts when you get caught in being careless.

No. In other words, I'd heard the claim several times before, didn't want to invest unnecessary amounts of my time to prove some random dumbass on the Internet wrong, assumed the sourced claim from wikipedia was right, and sourced it. Not that the claim was wrong--any my argument still stands.
I did not "proceed to flame." I responded to his baseless hostility with hostility of my own. He's a smarmy jackass that spouted bullshit, was called on it. I was careless in not reading the provision--I don't deny that. But it doesn't change anything.. My argument still holds, over his mindless assertions. And no, I don't think it was elitist--especially compared to his "lawl, you don't love DC over the suburbs?! You're sheltered and/or ignorant."

I make a similar salad with watermelon, cucumber, jalepeno, and cilantro.
I leave the jalepenos in slices and fish them out after a couple of hour "marinade". It's much more subtle heat and people who eat it can't figure out why it's so fucking good.
