View Full Version : Did you start playing gemstone as an obnoxious kid?

I did, I started back when I was 12. I remember I would see people jump and it gave the message "soandso starts jumping around like a 12 year old".
I would think "hey, what's wrong with that?"
My first days of gemstone revolved around me running around kissing, kicking, and punching everyone I saw (mostly dependant on the gender), sometimes for 20 minutes at a time. That was before I learned I could jump from the tree house and splatter on the floor. That's when I became hooked.
Man, I've been playing this game for 12 years... unbelievable.
So who else started playing as a dumb kid?

Yup. I was 15, 13 years ago now.
I was stupid as hell. I loved to kill people, thump them, annoy them.
Me and my buddies had this thing we like to do calling "MikeP". There was a guy in the game named MikeP that we liked to harass. In the prodigy front end we knew exactly how many spaces we had to space over to make something wordwrap in the game
So we would do this:
'Hey man how you doing." A giant rat just arrived a giatn rat just went west Sordan says, "Having a good day?".
And it would look like this to the other person:
Sordan says, "Hey man how you doing."
A giant rat just arrived.
A giant rat went west.
Sordan says, "having a good day?".
It was hilarious how many people would simultaneously run west from TSC or whatever. Ahh, the silly days. I also thought gemstone Cybering was cool back then too...in the baker's nook...on the east side of town, whatever.

Clearly he was talking about how you used to play gemstone, not how we are on the boards.
Its quite possible that GS brings out the obnoxiousness in everyone. Or is it the anonymity of the internets?
I’m certain PB can give a definitive answer.

Gemstone doesn't bring the 'obnoxious' out of everyone.

Maybe that's what he was talking about, but not what I'm talking about (anymore, anyway).
As for the original question, I was sixteen when I started playing, so I don't think I qualify for the "kid" part. But I'm sure there are plenty of people who know my character who can vouch for the fact that I was at least somewhat obnoxious. Any of the old cul-de-sac crew, really.
Gemstone doesn't bring the 'obnoxious' out of everyone.

I fit this thread title perfectly. Started in 6th grade so I was 12 years old as well. Me and my friend from school who also played used to kill people outside the gate and take their stuff when they rotted. That was fun and I would still do that if it was possible.
Getting in fights in hobgoblin area was my usual thing to do after hunting. That's when the boulder first started to get popular and I still claim to this day that me and my friend started the duels up there.

It's been about 14-15 years that I've been playing GS. Ick. It's horrible to type that. Still have my first character, too.
Started playing in 6th grade too with a bunch of friends from middle school. Back in those days I shared an AOL account an character with a family friend, and remember hanging out in the Kobold Hovel. After GSIII went to pay, I only have vague memories, one involving a tiff with the same friend I always shared an account with. He deleted our character that had a few sets of fgb, a fel hafter, and a bright yellow silk satchel (not even sure how good those were, but for some reason we loved it). Not much now, but to 8th graders back then seemed like a lot. I quit for most of high school and through college, and only came back because I find so much more free time with grad school.
The only clear cut things that brought me back to GS last year were the good times I had on the Friths Roof and later at the Tide Pool in the neighborhood close to the Landing Gates. Ahh, nostalgia, haha.

Yeah, I was 12 or 13. I would spend hours rapid fire stealing at the gemshop, the front desk from the healers and clerics and the AI. Hovel, shanty and dinghy were a lot of fun too. Fucking with (who I perceived to be) snooty ass people was fun too.

I definitely was obnoxious when I first started playing. 12-13, would get annoyed at the RPers for yelling at me when I was openly asking for mechanics help.

I used to hunt in the cats for the most part, but then I went up to Icemule and they had this area where Thyrils would swarm like the Thraks on Teras. It was great.
Yeah, swarm rates blow, but OTF has spoiled me. I LOVE MAers, I hope Jinsem's crew starts hunting there regularly. It turns it into a mini invasion.
My favorite Gemstone memory was discovering how to get through the boot to River’s Rest.

When it is Debia and I, or Merjinia comes along too, Sabreon's crew, then 2-3 other hunters the Market road, and the area west of them can have up to 5-6 creatures per room, with clusters of Constructs every 10 rooms or so. I'm sure you've experienced it.

I started playing when I was 12.
I was living in Hawaii at the time and got insanely bored after getting stung with a jellyfish and being forbidden to go in the ocean for two weeks. My brother found the MSN Gaming Zone and tried Gemstone and told me it was awesome, so I tried it out.
At first I was like WTF NO GRAPHICS? THIS IS DUMB. But then when I realized you could talk and stuff, I decided it was actually pretty awesome. My brother played a sylvan and I had a dark elf. And IG we'd say we were siblings, haha. This was before I really learned what roleplaying was.
He's since moved onto playing DragonRealms. Obviously I am still addicted to Gemstone.

I started when I was 12 in 7th grade, I'm 25 now. This before the move to play.net and you had to use the white screen with the black letters on AOL.
I had a blast with the ACT verb. A buddy and me used to transform into tanks and jets and just act stupid. I'd go hunt squirrels in the mine and get diseased, then haul ass back to town to try to live. I died a lot doing that.
I used to steal from people all the time. I made my original silver fortune by robbing people. Setup a sale, get them to give me the item or money first and then run or log off. Just keep making new characters over and over and doing that. I got banned for 2 months by a GM for killing people too. I had like 50 something player kills in a few months time. I guess that was too many.

I was 14 when I tried Gemstone for the first time. I didn't like it at first and quit. Then about a year later I had to stay home from school for a while because I was recovering from surgery. Maybe it was the pills....maybe all the pot. At any rate I tried it again and got hooked. Played on and off since. That was 95-96.

I have to say, i can't remember being a obnoxious kid on gemstone back when i started playing for real on AOL. (My little GEnie experience doesn't count) But honestly, i didn't play all that much, i was more into battletech.
And that was given the fact i was getting mentored by vif. Say what you want about her, but she showed me the ropes. and the bloody rag in her trousers. :scared:
It's not gemstone that makes you a tough guy, it's the anonimity of the internet. it's just that being in a game, and it's not limited to gemstone, you can add emphasis to the abuse you give out. I'm guilty of pulling this shit. i bet most of you all are as well.(this makes sense, doesn't it?)

I started around 94-95. My buddies and I used to use fake CC numbers to get 6 month Prodigy accounts, and then screw around in chatrooms. I spent alot of time in an RP chatroom (which was weird) called the Paradice Inn (hohoho). Every so often the room would flood with people bitching about Gemstone being down again. So I went on a search, found Gemstone, told my buddies, and we've all been playing (on and off) ever since. I know at least two guys who still play regularly from the original crew.
Anyway, since we were using fake Prodigy accounts to access the game, our accounts would get pwned after 4-6 months. That made us professional noobs. We weren't really punk-asses (too bad) in the game. In fact, we had alot of hate for the kids that did run around doing OOC shit...or macro hunting rats.
For us it was more of "who can make it the highest level before Prodigy figures out we're not paying them" than "how fucking stupid can we act".
I did kill alot of people back in them days though. In my entire GS career, since 94 or so, I'd say if I've killed 50 players, 40 of those were for stolen rats.
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll118/mofo_X360/grinSign1.gif
First time I played gemstone was when I was 11 (93) and in between that I played about 5-10 times not really knowing what I was doing. I didn't really start playing until it went free which was what, 96 so I was about 14 then.

Not sure if anyone remembers, played on Prod, or has heard of this but Khariz will confirm..
There was a way with Prod's FE that you could enter lines of text that would come out in game looking as though it actually hapenned. You would start the command with either say or a smile and then in the next line add things like, A lava golem just arrived. It'd look like this:
>'say Woo."(buncha spaces)>(buncha spaces)A lava golem just arrived.(buncha spaces)>(buncha spaces)Ulkov says, "WHAT IS THAT

How come nobody hangs at the AI anymore? When I started playing the AI was as popular a hangout as The Well. I was about 12 or 13 when I started, too, which was in '96, if I remember. I think it was just after GS had started a subscription fee, but it's been awhile. My friends and I would steal each other's characters and have them act out wacking off behind the bushes in TSC, or have them act like horny squirrels.
One of my friends also stripped down and then went on a killing rampage with just some newbie gear. He kept getting arrested and having his equipment taken away, so he'd agree to pay the fine, run out of the jail, and another friend would hand him some more newb gear, and he'd go back to killing. That same pair also pulled a couple of silver scams, with things like, "This 'double leather' is 6x! Sellin' cheap cuz I need the coins!"

higher levels = itchy trigger finger.
I started playing when I was.. fourteen, I think. I had no idea what I was doing. There was no such thing as being in character for me. I printed out a bunch of Zepath maps and that was the extent of my doc research for the game, heh. I remember dying constantly and talking with some guy about whether or not I was Filipino. Out loud, in public. I can't remember exactly why he thought I was.
Then I stopped playing because Simu split with AOL and moved to the web and my mother refused to pay for this little distraction from real life. =\ I didn't play again until I was eighteen when I realized... Hey. I've got my own money and my own debit card. I can pay for it myself! I realized my huge dorkness when I discovered I still had the directions to the various Landing Houses memorized for delivering messages.

I was 18 when I started playing in January '97, on a gimp ranger named TORROKK KREGIN that I trained like a rogue because I thought disarming traps and picking locks was something to be used in the field and not boxes. I quit that character at 25, and I only knew up to 608 and 103.
I remember how badass I thought I was when I got my mithril broadsword, and how I considered myself rich when my bank account reached 10k.
Then one day I walked outside the west gate into a frost giant invasion. Got pwned immediately and used as a sled.
Rolled Meth in January '98 because I wanted to get rich off enchanting, which I ended up being too lazy to deal with. The sad part is I'm still too lazy to deal with enchanting, even though you basically don't do shit now.

I remember when I finally learned how to get silver selling rat pelts, I refused to use the bank. I don't remember exactly why, but my 12 year old mind thought it had fees or something. So I lugged all my silver around. When I lost it due to decay I reported it and demanded to know what happened to my fortune.
Come to think of it, I ended up assisting for some pretty dumb things, like when my first gold ring got nabbed or to ask if there was ever a gemstone 2.

By kobolds. You're a wise man.
I remember that. I was banking in RR at the time and enjoying Haakon's Choice.

I remember how badass I thought I was when I got my mithril broadsword, and how I considered myself rich when my bank account reached 10k.
 I remember thinking drake fals were the best weapons EVAR.

That sounds exactly what my friends and I did. We took one guys account and had him sexually harass the flower girl. We also had him rub a black amulet in TSC. The destruction from that was incredible. We got him banned and he never came back to play.

I don't think I've ever heard of black amulets. What did they do and where did they come from?

Actually, I might be mistaken on the black amulet. We were using his character and we found something that had implosion in it. I wanna say it was a black amulet but I could be wrong. I think it was something they did away with like the red crystal.

I'm guessing it was an imbed from the old alchemist shop. Couldn't you get imbeddable amulets from there in different colors when you ordered something?

I started in 1995 or 1996 as a young teenager. I love it then, so much excitement in the world and I still love it now, even though the experienced has morphed into one of familiarity rather than "I've been lost for the past two hours and I don't want to die and lose all my gear. How do I get back to the Landing!?"
I remember keeping up a correspondence with Amerlise's player and idolized thoese that could handle something as intense as DarkStone and massive troll kings (most intense creatures IN ALL OF GEMSTONE!).
I also remember reading Icephx@aol.com's "The Dark Side of Rogues" and thinking all the ideas in there were so original and it was going to be the only way I'd play my rogue from then on.
One particular incident is coming to me right now about being in an AOL chatroom and VaultSysOp entering and making a few disparaging remarks to everyone in the room. I think he thought he was under the guise of anonymity, but I knew he was Musty.

Started around five 03? So I could be an obnoxious adult, my best friend played and I always called him a fag/dork and ribbed him about it. Then one day I got the bright idea to kick his ass in his lil dork world so I started a basic account...... now Im trapped.

I’m certain PB can give a definitive answer.
PB = far cooler IG.

When I first started.. I was outside the Catacombs, and a wizard minor shocked me. I freaked out, thought I was being PK'd, and when a random empath also there started "taking my blood" (was confused by the messaging), I thought the empath was also trying to kill me and took two swipes at her. No real harm done, but just funny noobisms.

I started playing at 18 I can't remember, I'd never done RP before, or anything like GS, my best friend got me into it after a year or so of telling me how great it was.
I finally gave in and started playing. I liked it a lot, I'm 26 now. I wouldn't say I was obnoxious my first year but I was clueless like 75% of the time on everything.
