2/3 of players in gemstone are bad roleplayers then.

Take that

How do you equate people RPing themselves to being poor or bad RPers? A decent RPer in my view is someone whose in Genre and doesn't go OOC.

I dunno. If you are a halfbreed cutthroat with no concern in life other than the luster off silver and your next meal I think you could pull of a very playable character....

Otherwise, yes, your boring. Its not a crime, nor are there any laws against it.

Boring yes, but not bad.

My cleric holds similar points of view as I do in real life, in terms of how he views his worship, how he approaches life and other people, etc. Yes, I'm a religious person in life (who woulda guessed, from the posting name?), and so is my cleric, but I don't see it as bad RP.

But I'm not a giant who was born in Kilinarij, last I checked.

And besides, the rest of my characters are different from the cleric...

Didnt mean to imply bad, We posted within seconds of each other, Rogue.

As long as your always in character and make occasional attempts at roleplaying I will count you as a worthy addition to the game.

The way I see it, RPing is a chance to get away from the hassles of the real world and let your imagination take over. Why would you want to go OOC? If you were going to do that why play at all, in my opinion.

In every community, some people are just jerks. Gemstone's community is no exception (obviously). It'd be nice if the GM's took your stance, but oh well.

Some people just dont know any better or simply do not hold any value to that aspect of the game. They enjoy hunting and spending time with their friends. They then have conversations on normal topics, or on their characters stats. They see no harm in doing so even if they know it is against the rules, and cant fathom why others cannot ignore them if it bothers them so much.

I speak from experience, I have been playing this game for a large part of my life and didnt really get the serious nature of roleplaying until much later in my GS career.

I think a major category was left out of the poll...that of "I only come here to hang out with my friends, not to roleplay". Something tells me that category, if included, would have garnered quite a number of votes.

I completely agree. I don't think you have to speak with a dialect, quote verses, go on quests to find something, start a club or house, invite yourself into any RP event the GMs cook up, etc... in order to be considered a good roleplayer.

Just stay in character and stop asking why your AS has suddenly lost 10 points when you are hunting a level 40 critter with 50 mana in your head and 8 spirit points.

Criminy.

That's the reason I started playing, a bunch of kids in my 7th grade class were doin it. To be honest with you that's a lot of the reason I'm playin now, because 80% of the time I'm in game I'm BS'ing with people. It's not taking away from anyone else's gaming, so I have no qualms about it.

I agree 100% with that. My characters are generally low key.. have one thats a loner but he has a really awesome fiance and was somewhat of a ladies man in the past.. but always low key.

I think you can be low key in the lands and be respected as a good roleplayer as long as you extend some type of intelligence for the game your playing and knowledge of your character and what personality or attitude you want your character to portray.

I disagree at 100%

An actor that acts his real self isn't an actor.

Nor ROLE playing your own role, you don't roleplay yourself, you are just being yourself.

StrayRogue

Its not bad role playing, when you are playing a role you yourself know better than anyone in the world (ie, yourself). Yes its boring. But it isn't bad like some stupid characters out there.

Although, I will give you the point that most the idiots in GS, most the OOC do stem from people RPing themselves. Wardoof is a good example here.

Every dms know them, it's the worse kind of players in any game.

Point is, I agree with stray in the fact that IF they remain IG, it's ok.

But you see so often people speaking of their character IN GAME.

roleplaying is playing a role, not playing yourself.

gemstone is an hunting game, let's not forget that

StrayRogue

Every Online RPG is a hunting game. Yeah, and I agree again, playing yourself is the worst type of player in tabletop. Its just so generically pointless.

That was an interesting survey. I have always role played characters that were different from myself. If I want to RP myself, I can do that in the real world and it wouldn't be role playing.

One of the most interesting situations to be in is one where, as a player, You feel like strangling someone, but as the character you smile and wink at the person instead and say something uplifting.......or.....vica versa.

Role playing is becoming who you are not for a while. The more difficult the situation, the better the role playing challenge and experience.

Just my opinion,

My ratio of socializing to hunting is probably:

Socializing 10% / Hunting 90%

18%
Socializing 30% / Hunting 70%

16%
Socializing 20% / Hunting 80%

14%
Socializing 50% / Hunting 50%

11%
Socializing 70% / Hunting 30%

10%
Socializing 40% / Hunting 60%

8%
Socializing 60% / Hunting 40%

7%
Socializing 90% / Hunting 10%

6%
Socializing 80% / Hunting 20%

5%
I only hunt critters. Socializing is a waste of time.

3%
I only socialize with others. Hunting is silly.

I think doing those things that alot of people would call good RP like making up their own story lines and their own accents, etc are just dumb. I think it's dull, personally, and alot of the stuff people make up is boring, far fetched, or just fucking retarded. But if that's what people think makes good RP, good for them. Maybe since they're such great roleplayers they should quit playing Gemstone and start playing a roleplaying game.

I can see accents as annoying, but having a detailed background is dumb?

So if someone asks you where your character comes from you just shrug and say "Where ever" and thats cool?

I admit I dislike crazy ass story angles like your part werewolf or actually a kobold, ect. However using the historical and cultural documents to develop a believable backstory IS good roleplay. Also, your past helps to influence what type of person you are, thus leading to how your character reacts in/to any given situation.

No, of course making up a background isn't dumb. What is dumb is all these people that speak like there 3 years old, come up with some crazy story about how their mother was a werewolf, or any number of things people do. My point is that Gemstone is not a roleplaying game. Roleplaying is one aspect of the game, but all advancement is based entirely on hunting so why spend all your time "Roleplaying" some silly story line you made up that involves you getting nothing from saving a kobold prince from a mean hunter? If roleplaying is your thing, why not go play a roleplaying game that allows for such things and rewards them?

Well, I feel actual decent RP is hard to find in any online game. I've found it in maybe two games, and I'm talking actual hard core player and GM enforced RPing. However, the mechanics weren't there. Nor the rich history. Nor the players. GS has these things. Its prospered. You'd be hard pressed to fine a pure RP system, where advancement ISN'T purely hunting based.

You could say try tabletop or LARP. Well, part of the attraction to GS, for me, atleast, is that there are always new people and new characters. There is a crowd, a population. While this can be a bad thing, ie, you do become another face in the crowd, where-as in D&D you are the focus of the GM's attentions, its still an atmosphere impossible to beat by the tabletop variations.

You can't have it both ways. If you want the population of GS, you're going to have to sacrafice things like RP. I'm not a hardcore roleplayer, and that's what I like about GS. Yeah, the OOC stuff is annoying, but the "hardcore" RP stuff is just as annoying to me. Listen to those people post about how they're the best roleplayer and how everyone else sucks then watch them have a quest of big sword hiding is pretty dumb in a game like GS where there's not an emphasis on RP.

StrayRogue
01-27-2004, 10:48 PM
Totally agree with you. While I don't find the hardcore stuff totally stupid, the constant ass-lickings in the Golden Kobolds folder (by the same bloody people, each week) does become tiring. As do the Quests.
