What influences how many times FM hits a critter?
I have a sorcerer that at level 11, FM hit once before dissipating, then at level 12 it hits twice before dissipating. I have a 55 sorcerer in prime that hits so many times It's basically a guarenteed kill; I don't think I could count because anything it wouldn't kill is high enough to kill me too quickly to test it on.

Your brand of dishwashing detergent is the dominant factor.

It's scary how ripped he is... Although if I had nothing to do all day... I'd probably look pretty good too.

At any rate, here's what the website says:
The length and strength of each type of Maelstrom storm (focused & unfocused) is based upon caster level versus target level.
But what does that mean? If you take the text literally, it means a level 10 vs level 10 mob would be the same number of strikes as level 50 vs level 50 mob; and this isn't the case.
If you take the text subjectively, it means any level 11 sorcerer casting at a level 11, would have the same number of strikes as any other level 11 sorcerer regardless of stats, skills, race, etc. I really don't think that's the case.

It strengthens with level atleast somewhat independantly of target. Spell aim helps determine how many times, or how many seperate maelstroms you can have going at once as well

Discipline also affects how many storms you can have at once form what I recall.
And yeah level, and spell aiming. You almost never want to try hunting with a spell you just learned. The mana cost vs the amount of mana you have, and the effectiveness of it... shrug.
Although, when I had a small sorcerer like that, I recall waiting in nedum vereri, until they had a swarm of like 10+ in the room, would ewave/callwind, then put up an open maelstrom, and strengthen it a few times(helps power and duration AFAIK) and then its an insta fry.
Did the same thing with cone of lightning on my wizard. Imbeds help a ton though since you don't have much mana. Think it was right after the merchant that had all the colored spider imbeds, I put 513 in some, and 518 in others, rub the 513 once when I was ready, put up my col signs along with madness, then rub the Cone imbeds like mad till the room was clear.
Later on though I think I used focused maelstrom from 18ish-35 to level against hooded figures. Early levels required a lot of stacking.

You can't strengthen an open maelstrom like you can a focused one

Was pretty sure I used to be able to strengthen open as well. Maybe not.
Anyways if you just have to use maelstrom atm, try under hunting a little bit.
Semi OT but one of the funnier things I've seen in the past year was a sorceress hunting in the stronghold maelstroming illoke shamans. I rolled my eyes at that one and wasn't surprised to see her bite the dust 2 minutes later.
