View Full Version : Obama Is Too Skinny

The Wall Street Journal has another excellent article explaining why Obama is not likely to resonate with most voters.

But in a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them.

The candidate has been criticized by opponents for appearing elitist or out of touch with average Americans. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll conducted in July shows Sen. Obama still lags behind Republican John McCain among white men and suburban women who say they can't relate to his background or perceived values.

"He's too new ... and he needs to put some meat on his bones," says Diana Koenig, 42, a housewife in Corpus Christi, Texas, who says she voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.

"I won't vote for any beanpole guy," another Clinton supporter wrote last week on a Yahoo politics message board.

The last overweight president to be elected was 335-pound William Howard Taft in 1908. As for tall and lanky presidents, "you might have to go back to Abraham Lincoln" in 1860, says presidential historian Stephen Hess. "Most presidents were sort of in the middle."

IMO it is as valid a political issue as only voting for him because for his symbolism, eloquence, because foreign college students love him, etc.

IE, none of it is at all valid.

In anycase, I guess Obama's gotta stop eating so many arugula salads from Whole Foods.

My dear Renian, surely you realize that we voters can cast our vote for any reason we choose. We don't need elitists to tell us what is important. Most elitists are skinny. If Obama is skinny and people in Eurpoe like him, then maybe he's an elitist too. Besides that, it wouldn't be in the Wall Street Journal unless it was expected to be important.

I'll humor you.

I'd rather have a president that gave a shit about his health and was a positive role model than a fatty. Mmkay?

Bush is skinny. He must be an elitist. People in Europe hate Bush though.

So are you suggesting that if Europe likes you, you're an elitist?

The Wall Street Journal was recently purchased by Newscorp, which is the parent company of Fox News.

We're electing a President, not who's gonna play Santa Claus at the mall next year.

Likewise, we're electing a president, not voting for American Idol.

Mr. ClydeR, what you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response, were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.

I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Okay, a simple "wrong" would've done just fine.

:sigh: It looks like the liberal media has decided to distract everybody today with another nonissue. This time they are attacking McCain because of his opposition to ultimate fighting.
