A lot of really good sitcoms have sad sacks... One could make a correlation between longevity of sitcom and strength of sad sack...
Futurama - Zoidberg
Scrubs - Ted the Lawyer
Friends - Ross
Southpark - Butters
Family Guy - Meg
Seinfield - George
I think Zoidberg is one of my favorates (probably butters next - gotta love butters).

South Park existed long before Butters was a mainstay, and he didn't really come into his own as a standard character early enough to really drive the show... Ross, George, and Zoidberg though... you may have something there. While I pretty much always detest that type of character, something about Eeyore always appealed to me, and pretty much everyone else.
Meg seems kind of irrelevant, as Chris would seem like the more fitting comparison here as the dopey, misunderstood, and often misunderstanding male character the pattern would suggest. Meg is just pretty much irrelevant to Family Guy as a whole, outside of Mila Kunis adding her name as the only real starpower the show had to offer while That 70s Show was still on tv (not at 10pm).

I wasn't even drunk :(
PBJT: You missed the point, it's not about being a dopey idiot, it's about who gets shit on. Meg is always getting shit on, the running theme being nobody in the family actually likes her. South Park was popular at first because it was crude, but that got tiring after a while... if you watch early SP episodes now they absolutely suck. I defiantly do not contribute success to butters, but he's helped.
Zoidberg in "Future Stock" is one of my favorites, "Once again, the conservative, sandwich-heavy portfolio pays off for the hungry investor."

In my experience boxes are usually empty, sometimes with a little cheese stuck to the top, and one time peperoni, what a day that was!

Hmm... guess I can see where you're coming from there, but I'm still confused about something. Assuming The Simpsons' equivalent is Moe, how does a character that's seen once every other episode (with the rare feature here or there) eclipse a more significant character fulfilling the same role, IE David Cross in Arrested Development. Below is Mr. Cross hoping for some sort of reason as to why he couldn't assist in Arrested Development's ill-fated network television run.

That to me is actually one of the best features of zoidberg, he's not a main character. There are a handful of episodes that center around him, and they're not nearly as good as the ones where he can just swing it and say something hilarious.
It keeps him fresh.
I don't subscribe to deathravin's "Sitcoms are only funny w/ sad saps", or that they carry shows... I'm just one guy who things zoidberg is hilarious, why not.

Zoidberg is so cool, you don't even know he's cool, kinda cool. I mean, I know he's cool. I used to think Bart Simpson was cool, and then I found out the chick who does his voice is a Church of Scientology whatsit. Zoidberg is definitely how I read all of Bacl's posts though. I think he has a Zoidberg avatar.
It was me. I'm the hero! LOOK AT ME!
This is the greatest lump of text I have ever expunged.
I always felt tweek was better than butters.

I've always loved the second christmas episode of Futurama where Zoidberg pops in dressed as Jesus before they all get attacked.
Mayor: 'Save us Jesus!'
Zoidberg as he's running for the door: 'I help those who help themselves!'
Well you dont want to end up old and alone LIKE ZOIDBERG

I don't know who this guy is, but words cannot describe the disturbing gayness in this picture.
I've been meaning to say that for a while, and it just happened to be in this thread that I remembered to.
