I've recently run into the problem of having an item unable to be deepened to the NORMAL carrying capacity of an off-the-shelf item because it was lightened to the limit of what is allowed by the new system. This is a rather irksome situation, and I am hoping to help as many avoid it in the future as possible.
If you value carrying capacity more than item weight, make absolutely sure you have an item DEEPENED to the maximum capacity before you have it LIGHTENED. Doing so will ensure that your item isn't limited to an extreme degree due to its low base weight. This is especially important for items like boots and pants, which can lose an entire item slot because it was lightened 1 pound.
What I do not know, but suspect is having an item deepened automatically limits the amount of weight which can be removed from it via the new automated system. But IMO, being able to carry 20 more pounds of stuff is worth 2 extra pounds of item weight.
