Ok, so I never got around to swapping Vista over to XP.

But I am still not happy with the way it works. For those of you that have it:

How many processes does your computer run?

Mine is running upwards of 58-62 at any given time. It seems like WAY TOO MANY.

I have 11 svchost.exe's running. At the same time. Now I have no real clue WTF it is, but none of my other comps have ever run that many of them.

I have two taskeng.exe...

I have two rundll32.exe

I have two csrss.exe

I tried removing some things, and starting in safe mode, several different things I have no real clue how to do, something I turned off, turned the speakers off too, so I went back to the default settings.

How do I cut out all the extra crap that's running?

And what exactly is the damn thing doing when it just starts making all kinds of processing noises all by itself? I read on a vista wiki thing, it constantly makes shadow copies or files, like daily... Can I turn that off?

What else does it do by itself, that I can turn off? I really don't like hearing my computer doing things I didn't tell it to do.

Am I going to have to go buy one of those freaking 3000 page books on Vista to learn about it just to use it?

Oh I just found this on the svchost (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-is-svchostexe-and-why-is-it-running/)

Helps some, but now I have no clue which services I need to turn off to get rid of some of the svchosts. And there are still a ton of other processes.

Go into your services panel and disable stuff. There are guides around- it'd be way too long to type it all out.

(if vista has a services panel, I've not even really used it. gasp.)

Click the start menu, in the text field, type SERVICE. Click on what it brings up. One thing I suggest disabling is the Window Search, you'll need to scroll way down to find it there. That's your biggest resource hog on Vista. You'll lose the nifty feature to search txt files for words or emails for words, but the Indexer will continue to eat your ram like whoa if you have Outlook Express or Word loaded.

Outside that, go to msconfig and stop things on your startup that you don't want. Play around with it some though.

Those SVCHost exes need to run, most of them anyways. Closing them will run you into trouble. If you got 3GB, doing what I told you will be a big help. But I have 55 Processes going right now, and I have AIM, this webpage open, a few things in my taskbar and some music.

Yeah I am used to having 16ish on XP this 50+ is stupid.

Knowing what I can safely turn off is problematic in some areas though. Some things are easy enough, some things I have no clue what they are or what they do.

My XP is running 71 processes right now.

That is crazy. Why would you need that many running?

In Drew's case, because streaming goat porn takes some energy?
